Do the new Xbox slims need a play and charge kit despite having 5 USB ports? Surely you should be able to just plug in a USB cable in this day and age?

Dunno whats different with the quick charge kits but i've had one of these official play and charge kits for a few months and found the battery life to be excellent and the lead connects snuggly and is long enough to reach my Xbox. Can't really fault it.

You can just plug a USB cable in, thats what these play and charge kits let you do. Or you could just buy a wired controller and plug that into the USB slot.

don't quote me on this but i am correct in saying that xbox are bringing out alot more black accessories now ?

for example chat pad .. i am 100% sure i saw one somewhere at e3 .. maybe i am tripping .. i duno lol

Buy with a degree of caution. I've got two play and charge kits and both have developed the same fault, they stopped working and won't charge. Bought at different times from different suppliers.

Very common fault and very dissappointed :(

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=&q=xbox+360+play+and+charge+kit+not+charging&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_en-GBGB362GB362&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=xbox+360+play+and+charge+kit+not

I'm sticking with two 4 packs of the 7dayshop "Good to Go" batteries (£7.58), cheaper and less like throwing money away.

** Oh still voted hot because as a deal it's the best price :)

I have not had any problems I am sure MS will replace anyway...

Common fault but very easy to fix, just keep plugging it in and out until the light stops green (can take up to 20 plug-ins but it WILL work!!)

I get that problem on both of mine, and the are genuine MS rubbish....

Personally I think these are well over priced for what you get.

In my opinion these should be no more than £4.99 as that's all they are worth..

ITS NOT A FAULT!!! Its a quirk, they ALL do it if you let them drain 100%!! You just have to "tease" the power back in and once theres a bit there it WILL charge, trust me, I've done this loads of times

Yeah seen the forum fixes on this and tried it with a varying degree of success from time to time. Got fed up in the end messing around and switched to the Eneloop type batteries, far less hassle imo, cheaper and more practical.

Yeah OK  If its a fault it would have been addressed and these would have been withdrawn as everyone I know has the same issue with a completely flat battery.

Is a PC faulty because it needs to be rebooted once in a while?? Is a sky box faulty becasue that too needs to be rebooted every so often?!?! Is a car faulty because it needs a service every 12mths etc?!?!? All NO, at most a design flaw but, but faulty, no way, all can be fixed very easily!

Always worked for me mate, but you do need to be patient, it can take a while but every one I've come across has been fixed with this method PLUS not letting it drain 100% in the first place.... however, like you, I also use rechargeables as they last longer and its less of a faff

Errr, when i said USB cable i was referring to the cable that comes with the kit which plugs into the top of the controller then the USB end into one of the two ports on the front of your 360, same as a wired controller would.

My son has had a play and charge kit for over a year, and his has never done it.

Yes

No, if it needs servicing or topping up, it is inherent, and is sold as such.

frakison

A "design flaw" is a fault. No matter how big or small. A product that doesn't work as intended is faulty. Why would you fix something that isn't faulty?

Whether it is faulty to a point where:

A. The manufacturer recognises it and recalls.
B. The consumer can't live with it and returns it or stops using it.

Is neither here nor there. Even the most ardent fanboy would be hard pushed to agree with your illogical description.

Beanz
Errr, when i said USB cable i was referring to the cable that comes with the kit which plugs into the top of the controller then the USB end into one of the two ports on the front of your 360, same as a wired controller would.

russ specifically asked whether the Xbox slim needed a play and charge kit despite having 5 USB ports. I took that as russ meaning "Are Microsoft still forcing you to use a "special" cable" or are they allowing to use a worldwide standard USB to Mini USB cable as on a PS3.
The answer is "YES".

The slim is no different to the current Xbox's in that respect, apart from when using the plug and play lead, you still have plenty of USB ports.

@ thesaint:

I normally agree with you on your posts but its clear that you are either very lucky or deluded. Either way I'm bowing out as its too hot and I really can't be arsed to counter the many points you put forward.

Clearly your glass is half empty whereas mine is half full, Im not a fanboy BTW, I just use common sense to overcome "issues" that are really no biggie!! I suggest that anyone with your outlook just sends the charge kit back and uses rechargeables, saves your blood pressure

Seems odd that MS have gone out of their way to specifically make a special cable when they could have just used a USB cable. Would be nice if the new Slim model offered a simple rechargeable controller, and its quite perverse that a console with 5 USB sockets can't charge a peripheral!

They wont do that, accessories are always a good revenue creator (and by that I mean, rip-off!! :p)

But by building in Wi-Fi they are missing out on that accessory, and a chargeable controller is hardly something out of Star Trek! Surely that should have been added before Wi-Fi!

Seems illogical Captain

Got a point there mate, plus theres not much chance of anyone upgrading the 250Gb hard drive either?!?!? Perhaps they are just feeling generous?!?!?

That's the main thing I wish Sony would have done when revising the console last year.
I would love a USB port or two in the back of the console.
