Posting this for a few reasons: seems cheap, seems not widely available normally, seems well regarded.

I got this because of an interest in 'smoky' single malts. On first tasting it wasn't vile, so as it may be an acquired taste, I've bought a couple more to mull over today (3rd July).

Researching this as a deal (Googling "buy Okell's Aile UK") I got pretty much nowhere. Very few places sell it. Now being in B&M (and generally these deals are national) its available to pick up and try fairly easily for anyone in striking distance of a B&M store.

Should you try? Well the only hit I got was £2.85 for a 330ml bottle (http://beerdock.co.uk/index.php/breweries/french-beer/pelforth-brewery/okell-s-brewery/okells-aile-330ml-bottle.html) so looking good price wise for this 500ml bottle.

Also if you look at the following page you will see its often an award winner in its class of "smoked beer" (http://www.worldbeerawards.com/best/smoked-beer.html) so it should be a good 'un.

BBE is Nov 2014.

They have a few other Okell's at the same price and size - IPA and Maclir.

Also of note they had (Wigan central store)

Bateman's Bohemian Brew Black Pepper Ale 500ml £1.29. Pepper pouch included.

Marston's Imported Shipyard Blue Fin Stout American Craft Beer. Worth a pop at 79p for a 355ml bottle.

And finally another Craft proclamation in the guise of Revisionist Craft Lager. Got this principally as it is not pasteurised, again 'just to try'. 500ml for £1.19 making it the cheapest of the 500ml's I've mentioned.

Excellent post OP. Never tried 'smokey beer' but will hunt some down tomorrow. Thanks

Hopefully my local gets them in. They've barely stocked new beers during the last few months :( They did have that black pepper one though, which sounds horrific!

The only nice beers they have at the moment are the Oakham ones (Citra, Scarlet Macaw & Bishops Farewell)

I'm not a fan of the flavour but if you are it's probably a good deal

Okells Ales are produced not far away from me on the Isle Of Man by Isle Of Man Brewery at Kewaigue.. It's exceptionally high quality as ingredients have to be pure by law... No chemicals etc. There are seasonal brews and the odd speciality brew such as Mac Lir and Raspberry ale. If you are after a proper 'real' ale few will match anything with an Okells brand unless you pay way over the odds and even then it probably won't be made to the same stringent standards. Hope that helps.

Looks an interesting beer.

Uses burning peat during the malting process which leaves 'smokey aromas'.

I realised I missed out on my first bottle by drinking it from the bottle. Sniffing the empty bottle I know I've missed out on the aromas (the empty bottle smells really nice - very much like liquorice) so next taste will be in a glass to get more out of it.

WIgan has had a dribble of new(to me) ones so I haven't really bothered but posted this as these have suddenly popped up so it was worthwhile. There was even another new beer but I forgot what It was. Anyway hope some find their way to yours. I got the pepper one btw. Even more odd is the recommendation on the label to try it with "popcorn & strawberries"

They had all these in Stockton B&M along with the Stevens Point beers. I'll have to invest in them however I thought the black pepper looked odd when I saw it.
I tried the Revisionist beer in Wetherspoon in Middlesbrough and thought it was decent. Tasted quite orangey.
Was the other new beer you spotted in Wigan the Chocwork Orange one? That sounds good to me, chocolatey orange beer.

Actually yes! Good reminder. I saw the Chockwork Orange too when I first got the Aile. Forgot about that too as I'm not keen on chocolate orange. So that's another new-to-me beer on the list tho dunno volume and price. And there is the other one I still forgot :{.

I tried the Steven's Point but thought it was very so-so and not much to it altho at the time I'd been hitting "Bah Humbug" and other rich beers so maybe that is why I found it a bit lacking.

The chocwork is £1.59 a bottle and 6.4% I believe. I can't help you out with the other one, Stockton has that many beers they make my eyes go blurry!!

Good spot, I do like rauchbiers (have a go at Schlenkerla if you see it Selfridges used to have it) but bit of any acquired taste. Good dependable brewery. I tried some of the Revisionist from Tesco and was a bit disappointed if I'm honest. If anyone has a Joules pub near them (Staffs, Shropshire, Cheshire) try the Green Monkey. It proper three week layered and unpasteurised. It's what Srella should taste like!

When I was googling the Revisionist I found two at Tesco. One Was not available and is the one I got from B&M (matching labels). There was another, different label, produced for Tesco. There may be two, both sold in the past by Tesco..

Here.

As seen in B&M

For Tesco Note it is called "Tesco Revisionist Craft Lager"

Edited By: Meathotukdeals on Jul 05, 2014 22:47: Both versions sold by Tesco

Had the Revisionist last night. Nothing special at all to me and won't be buying again.

OTOH the Blue Fin Stout was quite nice and I'm not much of a stout drinker. Will buy a few more of them.

I'm falling for B&M at the moment. The 'point' beers are actually very nice and hoppy, and Oakham make amazing beers, Citra being the standout. I'm always open to new brews, so I'll check out the local B&M this week. Our local is Thurrock Lakeside so fingers crossed.

These are amazing beers. My mum lives in the IOM so I stock up whenever I'm over, if you can get hold of the white beer, it's amazingly good and in my opinion rivals Belgian. This price is cheaper than in a Manx supermarket too! HOT!!!

Aww poor you. It is definitely smokey isn't it. That was the overwhelming theme for me (tho I see some call it only delicate) but drinking smokey whisky maybe I was a bit more prepared (even having read some whiskies can taste a bit like TCP!). Ah well at least you have tried one on the cheap side. The IPA was nice - really refreshing and I think the 'bitterest' of the ones I've had lately (one being Marston's).

I haven't looked but I'd not be surprised to find that burning peat is an old tradition. Anyway feel free to recommend some beers. At the end of the day its only satisfaction I'm after :)

From what I remember nearly £2 a bottle for a 500ml, I think I saw a few 3 for fiver deals too.

I've just opened a bottle and I think it's very nice indeed. I bought it along with a bottle of Brains stout. Two nice 500ml bottles of beer for less than £2.50 in total. Bargain!
