INTELLIGENT AUTO MODE

This "intelligent" type of AUTO mode combines Face Detection and Shadow Adjustment Technology to allow the camera to detect the five most commonly used scenes automatically. It enables the capture of perfect photos without any need for manual settings.

BRIGHTCAPTURE TECHNOLOGY

A technology developed for better shooting results in low light situations. It works in two ways: i) All available pixel information from the image sensor is used to provide a view on the LCD thatʼs up to four times brighter than conventional types, to make framing easy even in dark surroundings. ii) In certain shooting modes sensitivity is increased (resolution is sometimes reduced), which results in well-exposed images with accurate colour reproduction, high contrast and definition, even when not using the flash. Scene modes that benefit from BrightCapture Technology include Candle, Night Scene and Available Light

HYPERCRYSTAL

A high-grade, fully-transmissive technology used in LCDs, which employs an additional layer at the bottom of the LCD to reflect light from external light sources. This enhances the brightness of the LCD, so even in direct sunlight images are displayed sharply and improved contrast compared to that of conventional displays. Also, it provides for particularly wide viewing angles without glare or shadow, so images can be framed from a variety of angles and viewed by several people at once.

IN-CAMERA PANORAMA MODE

A mode allowing users to instantly compose 130° panoramas right inside the camera. By framing each shot in step with the on-screen guide, exciting panoramic scenes can be stitched together for a more realistic and emotional depiction of any landscape or skyline. This mode is only available in conjunction with the use of an xD-Picture Card.

microSD COMPATIBILITY
A special attachment comes bundled with this camera which provides for microSD card compatibility in addition to being able to use xD-Picture Cards.

which magazine says

An impressive ultra-slim 10Mp camera from Olympus, the mju 1040 only just falls short of our Best Buy standard.

Weighing a mere 123g, the mju 1040 will slip easily into any pocket, and its sharp styling is certainly impressive. There’s a x3 optical zoom squeezed into that waif-like frame, too.

Unsurprisingly for such a slip of a model, the mju 1040 is hardly bulging with features, and this may not be one for the hands-on manual control enthusiast. There are no options for aperture or shutter-speed priority modes, and you can’t adjust the focus manually.

Nonetheless, there is plenty here to satisfy a casual photographer looking for a highly portable camera. You can choose from eight scene modes designed to capture certain subjects or conditions at their best, and face detection helps to keep focus on individuals in your shots.

The camera is ready for operation in a little more than two seconds but, disappointingly, our testers found that you have to wait more than five seconds between shots – a very slow speed for single shot-to-shot time.

On the plus side, put the camera into burst mode, and it is hummingbird quick, taking a shot every 0.09 seconds. While burst mode can only be activated at resolutions of less than 3Mp, this is more than enough for producing standard 6x4-inch photos.

Similarly, by dropping the resolution to 3Mp you can raise the ISO to 3,200, making the mju 1040 more sensitive in very low light. This can cause a grainy noise effect in the resulting pictures, however.

Overall picture quality is good enough to satisfy most casual users. A camera of this size is hard-pressed to compete with models featuring larger lenses and image sensors, and for such a portable model the mju 1040 acquits itself well, with decent image quality and an average performance in low light.

Battery life is excellent, and the mju 1040 is generally very straightforward to use, though the buttons are particularly small and set very flat against the body of the camera, making them slightly tricky to operate.

Pros: Very compact, incredibly quick in burst mode

Cons: Slow between single shots, small buttons
