Love shane meadows, but this isnt your typical shane meadows film, watched the south bank show special on shane meadows and by his admission he thought he had made it into the big time when he got to make this, but it turned out he didnt enjoy making this as he said the pressure was on him more because of the budget etc and went back to making his films in his own special way, saying all that id still buy this for £3.

I keep watching Shane Meadows' movies in an attempt to try and see what the fuss is about and all I ever find is mediocrity. Maybe it's me or maybe it's just cool to like Meadows?

Its not about been cool its about no frills, and using people to act that are not really know (except the odd few) and then not putting the hollywood glitz glamour and effects on show, Its about telling a story and using actors that make his films look like there documentries, dont get me wrong there not going to be for all people as i dont like every other type of films i.e horrors i cant stand them, but hey the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

I actually paid to see his movie because a girlfriend fancied it.
It's absolute complete unmittigatted dross.
It simultaneously manages to be both shabby and self indulgent and I would suggest that anyone thinking that the posts above make it sound interesting should save themselves 3 quid and more importantly a couple of hours of wasted life by not buying this.

It was filmed in Nottingham, so it should really be called Once Upon A Time in the East Midlands.

It's still a sh*te film.

Brilliant film. Don't understand the hate to Shane Meadows? He is an independant film-maker with a distinct arthousey style. For anyone that knows a deal on media or film studies, This is England is a key part of how the British Film Industry survived to succumbing to Hollywood Dominance.

Also, similar to something like 'Notes on a Scandal' - his films provide social realism to a high standard, so if you're bored of every superhero film and want something gritty and truthful, his stuff is the stuff to watch.

Nonsense!
How anyone can say Dead Man's Shoes is ' mediocre ' is absurd!!
It's borderline masterpiece imho, and certainly a MUST SEE for all true film fans!

Totally agree. I've not yet seen 'Once upon A Time In The (East) Midlands' but I have seen This Is England, A Room For Romeo Brass and Dead Man's Shoes. I thought that Dead Man's shoes was brilliant; Paddy Considine (co-writer) portrays a terrifying ex-army anti-hero. I enjoyed Romeo Brass but This Is England did not meet my expectations given the hype that surrounded it, watchable nonetheless but not as good as everyone kept telling me it was going to be.

For £3 delivered, 'OUATITM' is worth a punt. If anyone's interested, Dead Man's Shoes is currently £3.98 at Amazon: Dead Man's Shoes DVD

Heat added.

Agreed. Paddy Considine gives an acting masterclass. Truly gripping cinema.

This isn't a great introduction to Shane Meadows' work, it being probably his weakest full-length movie.

But some of his other stuff is great and his focus on the East Midlands is refreshing. Being from the South but living in the East Midlands my girlfriend and I often remark to each other, "Ooooh, its just like being in a Shane Meadows film, isn't it?"

This film was simply a load of tripe but I watched it all the same..

I enjoyed Dead Mans Shoes, but it's nowhere near approaching the level of acclaim that it gets...(from some people)

I tend to agree with Spionkop

Having spent 6 years in the army I didn't find him to be terrifying at all - quite the opposite in fact.
