Available for pre-order - stock expected next week. Werbsite states £349 but I was sent an email (from Marc Helliwell) to say pre-launch special offer £299. Unlike the x08 series, this 3D AV receiver has full networking capabilities, DLNA, flac, Napster, last.fm etc etc.

Also direct iPod / iPhone connectivity via USB

It gets better - I asked for a package deal with Boston Acoustics SoundWare 5.1 and 30m QED micro cable, and was quoted £550. Cheapest online price for receiver and speaker set alone is £613 as far as I can see - cable is worth another £50 (with quite some margin I am sure).

Seems a reasonable deal considering all other retailers have the 509 on pre-order for £349.

Hope this helps someone - I suppose you will have to phone up to fix this deal!

Quite, why do they have to make these things so big? Maybe because Onkyo stuff is so heat inefficient, as alleged round and about, or because they know most purchasers want their visitors to SEE what it is that they are supposed to be being audiologically impressed with.

Oh and by the way, pay a bit more and get a Sony.

Looks good enough for most needs, not a bad pre-order price either. I'd definitely go for this over the 508.

(actually, I'd go Yamaha/Denon probably, but this does look good for this level - especially if you don't have anything for DLNA)

I'd personaaly opt for a more known brand, like Sony than this unheard of brand, but a good deal nonetheless.

It's a bit mis-leading that they're showing pictures of the 609 THX on the 509 pre-order page. Makes you think that the 509 has THX. Blame IT dept - that's what I usually do.

Onkyo - are a renowned for Cinema Surround sound and can tell you that Sony arent as good as Onkyo in this department. Denon amps are great too, but i would still get a onkyo.

yes they are hot and big, but the power behind them is great!
the calibration setup is easy and precise.

if you watch Independence Day at the scene where they shoot the can on the alien ship you will feel the bullet whizz past you from left to right.

Onkyo any day

I have had three different branded Cinema amps and can tell you that the upscalers really dont work and are useless, get a cinema amp for the sounds only.

Are you being serious or is your sarcasm a more subtle than im used to?

Its good to see that Onkyo have been working on the aesthetics of their units as everything they have put out over the past 4-5 years has been dog ugly!

1080i-only is a bit of a dealbreaker for me, but it's a nice looking unit!

You won't be disappointed bud. For the money and a complete package I still rate it as my best buy of 2010........Although this does look damn sexy.

.....and if you have a 1080p HD TV it can only show a 1080p image anyways.
It can't do an interlaced image.
So long as the deinterlacer is decent (and by now most are) that whole '1080i/p'
thing is meaningless.

1080i is for component out only.

Forgive the dumb question, but will this amp alllow (if connected via HDMI) the sound to bypass and go to the TV if the amp is switched off??

Can we go an onkyo thread without these tiresome comments?
