the speakers output on the amp looks different to my current surround system (sony) inputs, does that mean buy new speakers too?

http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=ONKY-TXSR606-SIL

how does the TX SR606 compare @ £399? given that it supports hdmi 1.3 and also Dts High Res Audio/dts Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus/dolby Truehd

so youre saying the extra £300 is mainly for the THX? is the sound difference worth the price difference? u must be kidding me!

The 875 is MILES and MILES above the 606 in terms of overall sound quality, its superb for music, amazing for films far more powerful and contains a far superior scaler....

One is a budget, the other is a top end.

The Irish one is a franchise of the Richer Sounds name. I live in Belfast and have queried this when I got my previous VIP mail via e-mail. They will still price match though as i got Tannoy EFX's recently and they gave me them for £139 after pricematching with Superfi who had them on 7 day offer.

um... the (main) reason anyone buys more expensive amplifiers is the increase in sound quality. Otherwise we would all be watching movies and listening to music on a PC with those little sats that cost 25 quid......

of course its worth it if you can hear the difference, if you cant then no its not. but then might just as well buy much cheaper amps without the HDMI audio features cos you wont be able to tell the difference with HD audio anyway.....

you can get some nice cheap prologic amps on ebay, they dont sound much worse than DD..... -joke- ! ;)

marketing works amazingly well these days... friends must be pretty impressed with "ooohh i have a THX certified amp which undergoes a series of extremely hard tests to pass and not many can get that..., you can hear the MASSIVE £300 difference to a 606, just like from pc speakers to a 606"

LOL i'll stick with 606 :-)

Didn't realise the Belshaft shop was a franchise store, cheers for the heads up about the price matching.

yeah and its only marketing that makes ferrari better than ford....... sanguano! The THX-Ultra certification is a specific set of values for sound reproduction. In itself doesnt mean very much -its a soundfield - unless you know that it has to achieve it you need a specific standard. this standard = better quality sound which is the point of amplifiers. Not to mention even if the ULTRA certification didnt mean anything to you the 875 is leaps and bounds more musical than the 606 which i believe was descibed as passable with stereo sources. The next amp above the 875 with improved stereo amplification is the £1200 arcam.

Also no one buys an amp to impress their friends - even if they knew about the ultra cert. However they might be impression when you put on 300 or matrix engage the thx ultra mode and feel the sub kick 7 shades outta the sofa while still allowing you to hear the dialogue..

the price difference was my point - if it was just more money for nothing we would just be using the cheap-o pc speakers. But its what you can afford - hell id buy a meridian in a second if i could afford it! And if you can only afford the 606 i guess you'll have to stick with that, but dont try and make out its cos its not worth the price difference because clearly it is - even if it wasnt THX badged it would still be a better buy than the 606. More expensive = better electronics, better electronics = better sound. If you interested in stereo as much as movies and dont have a HD - audio source or arnt bothered by hd audio then you might find a better bargain in the sony 1200es which is stereo sonically superior and can be had for a lot less than the 606 as that is a brand new model and the sony is being replaced by its own newer models!

true, very true.

the only problem with some people is that they're never happy. if you'd give them a brand new ferrari for 50 grand they'll post a link to a £3999 copen or something!

just because you can't afford it doesn't make it bad or not worth the money!

875 has been given reference status by homecinemachoice! a privilege usually only £5k or £10k receivers can manage to achieve and you'll still have people moaning about a £599 rcv being able to do that!

For those on the lower end of the budget scale, I picked up a black Onkyo 506 over the weekend from Richer Sound. Price matched against hifix £225 and they gave me another 10 off. So £215 for a very good receiver.

Awesome receiver!

Great deal !

Just replaced my AVR200 with a 606 though, so can't, and currently couldn't have justified the extra money :( ( I needed the HDMI switching)(( That's the male gadget orientated definition of need ))

I was pleasantly surprised by the 606 over the previous amp though, so I bet this is awesome, and if I could have afforded it wouldn't have hesitated. (Wonder if RS will do a part ex on a 1 month old 606)
Would have to add though, if your primary interest is Music alone, then don't touch an AV amp, they are not a patch £ for £ on Music dedicated equipment.

If I still lived at my Dad's (God I miss massive disposable income, lol) then this would be a very tempting upgrade indeed.

excellent piece of kit, this an the 605 are prob best value amps out there at the mo...shame its at richer sounds though...one of the worst electrical stores on the planet

Must admit I've only ever been in RicherSounds once - many years ago. At that time they all their stock just piled up in boxes ... I didnt buy anything as I couldnt be bothered to sift through all the boxes.

Have you had a bad experience of them then ?
#26
Maidstone branch is very good in my opinion. Dealt with them 2-3 times on major purchases.

Probably the only downside to this site, people vote down / **** off deals because they can't afford them or don't understand the item that they're referring to.

Same people who vote hot and rave over posts for a free sachet of sugar or a tea bag. :whistling:

This is a brilliant deal for an amazing piece of kit ;-)

dont agree with the last point.....ive have had many budget music amps...technics, denon, etc and the onkyo 605 is just as good as a good budget amp for music
#29
What's with all the obsolete ports?
#30
Sweet, was going to buy the 606 but at this price the 875 is well worth it. Don't need to buy a seperate music amp, and it upscales everything.

RE: Ports. The idea of these amps is that it's the entry point for all your AV needs. Then you have one cable to TV, and one set to your speakers.

I've got a question: I've signed up to the VIP, but can't get the VIP price.. I'm clicking the link from the mailshot page so that isn't the problem..
#31
Picked one up yesterday. Was originally going to go for the 606, but at this price the 875 is a steal!!!

Just can't believe how heavy the thing is though!!!

23kg, crikey! That makes my 15kg receiver look like a featherweight.
Are you pleased with it? I'm uber jealous :p

However, you neglected to mention that the various THX certifications are indeed used primarily for marketing purposes and can only be used if payment is made - thus making George Lucas even richer than he already is:whistling:

There is so much cobblers bandied about regarding amplification. Nearly as much as regarding speakers, cabling and source components:p
#34
For the lucky few who have brought these what speakers did you buy.
This amp is great its not just the sound but scalling, autosetup, multi room, plus ofcourse the Audio and video
#35
i have registered as VIP, however the price is still the same. Any ideas?
#36
Question about the multi-room option - does it allow you play a different source in another room or just the same source as in the main room?
#37
different sources, and something that set this apart is, I believe instead of just playing the analogue music which requires an analogue source/cable. It can play anything and decode digital. this is quite a big thing and a large step up from lower models.

Don't worry about it. The wife just turned up at RS, said she got the VIP E-mail, and they sold it at the VIP price.

They then got 7 blokes to carry it to the car for her..........................
#39
what does this thing do?
#40
It looks as if this is now £699 in a few places: Superfi and Creative Audio.
Deal if you can get it for £599 though! Cracking Amp for a Bargain price!
