The Onkyo TXSR508 follows on from the successful TXSR507.

The Onkyo TX-SR508 offers a highly competitive, four, 3D TV compatible HDMI inputs - that's still at least one more than average at this price point. Added to this excellent HDMI count you'll also find twin optical and twin coaxial digital inputs and the full complement of component, composite and RCA phono sockets that you'd expect. In addition to a front-mounted mini-jack for easy connection of any portable with a headphone output, the TXSR508 features a universal port at the back for Onkyo iPod dock connection or DAB+ tuner upgrade module. Finally, a second zone output that's either active (powered) or passive (requires powered speakers) gives the option of spreading the sound into another room.

As you'd expect, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus are all standard. In addition to this you'll also find Dolby Pro Logic IIz which is ideal for listening to many of the new HD TV broadcasts on TV.

When it comes to setting the TXSR508 up, the standard Audyssey 2EQ system is there to help out. This not only automatically calibrates speakers, but also corrects room acoustic issues. The upshot of this hi-tech processing is ideal sound quality, whatever the room.

Finally, there's the sound quality. The powerful sound of this amplifier is helped still further by the high power transformer, WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) Pure Audio and Double Bass Function - not to mention the 100 watts available to each speaker.

The Onkyo TXSR508 offers everything you'd expect from a class-leading AV receiver and then some!

Is it just me, or is this not funny anymore?

Well the original joke has long worn thin but that it apparently really annoys some people has given it legs. If those annoyed just ignored it it would have fizzled out long ago. Great viral marketing for Onkyo, LG should ask them for a reward ;)

There seem to be so many Onkyo models, it makes it difficult to work out what is the best value deal.

3 weeks ago I fell to temptation and bought a TX-SR608 for £299.
The model number is bigger but at £130 more I don't know whether I got a good deal or not.

Any experts out there who can advise what sort of deal I got in hindsight ?

I have an old Sony surround sound system (5 speakers + subwoofer) but the unit itself is dead. If I buy this could I simply connect the 5 speakers I already have and have surround sound back again. Obviously I've no idea on the techie side anymore so i could be suggesting complete crap!

Yes.

On my Onkyo you can connect via bare wires or banana plugs (once you get the caps out).
If you go on to the RS website a large picture of the back of the amp is available.

The only thing you will need to check is how the subwoofer you have connects. The Onkyo
connects via a standard subwoofer cable/connection. See what connections you have in the back of your subwoofer.

Will this work in other counties as well or just Leicestershire?

How about you just workout what inputs and outputs you need and buy accordingly?

ive just odered the yam rx667 off hot deals for £230. (which i know is a better amp) i am tempted to cancel that order and get this and save a few more £ towards my speakers..

this amp doesnt upscale but is that a feature worth going for? i have a led 40" tv with freeview hd and a ps3...?

also does this have onscreen display?

dont forget £10 off for vip

Yes annoying but you won't stop it.... There will be the usual "silly comment about brand" then the new member who joined after the comment who doesn't follow and then it will need explaining, *yawn*

i would prefer the yam, but it saves quite alot...

if this doesn't have upscaling does this mean it will affect the quality of a blu ray disc or will the quality just be the same as it the player were connected directly to the TV?

It may not be funny any more be 90% of the population have never heard of the brand have they ? Everyone has heard of Sony even if they think TV , everyone has heard of Yamaha even if they think Motor cycle !
I think you have to be into AV stuff to have heard of them and most people aren't
#23
specialist company nothing wrong with that

I think you are wrong here, Onkyo specializes in this stuff - the brands you mentioned don't. I wouldn't get a gardener to do my plumbing

I don't think so! This brand is very well known in the AV world. Just check AV Forums. Sony do good amps, I have one myself, but Onkyo have a good price to feature ratio. This is a hot deal!

Well, it may 'amuse' you but how much of this thread has been discussing the actual product? This constant trolling that you seem to enjoy is just threadcrapping and dilutes any discussion of things that might actually be useful to those considering a purchase, you know, the reason most people are probably on here.

It's a bad joke that a few regulars on here like to keep going as it's 'funny'.

You can be happy with your purchase, you have many upgrades on this model, most notably 6 hdmi inputs, video upscaling (using a first class chip), 7.2 sound capability (can supply to 2 subs) and a 20% increase in amplifier power to all speakers.

Over the years I've gone from a superb Yammy to a Sony that totally unimpressed me despite having good reviews, back to another Yammy that is much better but still not ticking all the boxes for me. I've long read about Onkyo and am sorely tempted to give this a try.

Thanks.

Been comparing the inputs/outputs, the 608 seems to offer quite a few extras plus more oompf

It happened 10 months ago.
Jeeeeez, let it go.
The guy was a prat back then, he still is one now and thinks it is funny to carry it on.

Is it just me, or is this not funny anymore?

If you dont like it why do you come into Onkyo amp threads if its not to complain about the inevitable jokes? Honestly the complaining about the jokes is has got as old and the jokes themselves.
