I paid £389.99 for mine from Richer Sounds about a month ago. So that is a great deal:x

Actually I tried both this and the 905 and both had terrible handshake issues with my TV and Sky HD. The customer service at Onkyo said it was "just one of those things". Got a Pioneer box and the picture and sound is far superior however YMMV.

Actually bought them from Richer and when I took the second one back as faulty, before Onkyo told me it was what they did, the manager said he hoped they stopped stocking Onkyo as he seemed to send most of them back or sell them off as open boxes.

I ended up buying something from him much cheaper so I don't think it was flannel to get me to spend more.

Good luck to anyone who buys one.

How does this stack up against the Yamaha AX763 for £280?

Would you say these were dodgy amps then, as I was thinking of buying one?

To be fair, when they manufacture the best/most selling amps, theres bound to be more returns of those, then there are other makes.
Fair enough if you have had problems, but I think it's foolish of the Manager to suggest they want to stop stocking them...as it's where most of their sales are coming from.

Personally I have a refurbed Onkyo and I think it's a brilliant peice of kit. Each to their own though.

Excellent deal. Paid Richer Sounds £399 for mine 6 monthsago. Teamed up with Pioneer 428, PS3, Tosh HD DVD, Sky etc and Bose speaker sysyem(?) no problems setting up impressed with sound. I must have got a good one.

to suggest pioneer amps are better than onkyo is just laughable.....i bet you connected cheap cables to the amp

for decent quality affordable av amps, onkyo are 2nd to none...

You must be super unlucky! This amp i've had since it was first released, even too this day and even at this very minute i'm listening to it - it still makes me wonder how on earth music can sound so good, its hard to believe. Jam packed with features, it was best £400 i've spent so i'd snatch this deal!

Very very hot!

Depends who you talk to on this one, some say the Yamaha, others go for the Onkyo, WhatHiFi prefer the Yamaha now. The Yamaha has no tuner though, but does have pre outs so you can add a better amp for music. The Onkyo upscales and includes a tuner.

A tough choice....
#13
can anyone else confirm this?
banned#14
I so hope they are doing this in Belfast. Too late today but i will there tomorrow afternoon. Bargain at that price :-D
#15
I hope it's easier to set up than the 1909. It's taken ages.

RS price matched Weymouth HiFi on a Kef 1005.2 for £279

A tough choice, but one anyone considering buying this at £300 needs to consider with just a £20 differnce in price.

Anyone else have any insight?

4 hdmi in and 1 hdmi out too. good for those had extra hdmi's components or planning to add one. will decode Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio/High Resolution Audio with up to HD 7.1 channel surround sound. i've got a higher onkyo 806 for about 3/4 mnths now and never had problem with it.

highly recommended brand though

We've got this amp, along with a 5.1 set of Mordaunt Short Alumni speakers and it sounds absolutely stunning.

At this price, go for it!

yahama are a good alternative, but imo not a patch on the onkyo at this price point

good price.

I've got an 875 with MA Silver RS6 fronts, RSLCR, RS5 for rears and MJ Acoustics sub.

Regarding earlier post about picture quality of 905. Obviously didn't know what they were doing, 875 and above have Reon video processor that is fantastic.

However, I must admit there was a hdmi handshake issue when connected to my media pc. This was resolved with a firmware update on the amp. Probably not a problem with this newer range though.

Yamaha's new range is looking good for the price, wouldn't go less than 863 though.

However, if you want to make use of the new HD sound codecs, remember PS3 can't pass these as bitstream so having a HD amp doesn't make much difference. Need a stand alone bluray player for that.

No I don't work for a competitor and if you check the 905 owners forum you'll find the handshake issue is common. I won't respond to your implications about my set up abilities or choice of cables. Personally won't have another Onkyo but YMMV.

I recommend you put 'Onkyo Owners Forum' into Google and read a few pages. Very varied views. Some are rabidly pro (see some of the responses I've had above) and some are at least extremely unlucky. The most common issue is HDCP handshake issues which can mean that it takes 30 seconds to change channel with sky HD or between sources. As I said I contacted Onkyo imagining I was doing something wrong as the second box I'd brought home did the same and Onkyo said that they knew it was an issue and it was "just one of those things". The 905 did have a great sound but no good for me as an AV switcher. The 606 was a bit better at switching less good at sound and in the end I decided to sack off onkyo altogether.

However, YMMV.

Good luck.

Your mileage may vary.

Im still more inclined to go for the yamaha- has had great reviews and yam cs has a better reputation.
Would the fact that the yamaha cannot decode the compressed formats and that it only has 2 HDMI outputs be likely to hinder any future upgrades, I think that is the question.
There are a lot of unimpressed 606 buyers on AVforums, and a lot of impressed yamaha owners.
Aaaarggh...

Have a chat with the manager at Belfast on the phone before you go, he's a brilliant bloke & open to doing a deal.
You might do better than the 606 after chatting to him (drop a few hints about the 706/806 and see if he responds).

He did me an unbelieveable deal on my monster black 875 a few months back
(let's put it like this, I got change from £600 when they were just under £1000 retail.
I later heard Richer bought up all the Onkyo UK stocks of the 875 & 905s helping them clear the way for the coming new 876 &906 models, they were doing good deals on the 905 at the time too - so they can't have fallen out with Onkyo too badly!).
It is a monster too, over 60lbs of sheer high quality componentry (mind your backs!).
Incredible audio - and Dolby TrueHD & DTS HD-MA are very impressive.

If I did not have the cash at the time I'd have been knocking on their door for a good deal on the 606, it might not master absolutely everything (some say it's a little lacking finesse with some music) but if 'home cinema' is primarily your thing then it's about as much bang for your buck as you can get right now
(and IIRC they come with a 3yr warranty as standard too).

Brilliant pieces of kit & top value IMO.

I must admit that I do notice the handshake business with my 875 - firmwared to the latest spec - with Sky HD box - but tbh it's a rare flick to a blue or a black screen momentarily when changing channel and then on to your chosen program, you barely notice it.
Reon is very nice to have and the Audyssey set-up is easy and very very good.

Yeah , spot on Gixxerman  - Darrenjdoc, his name is Jayson and he will try to find a deal that suits you if you ask, though it can be real tough to get through on the phone and in case you are unaware they open (and close) early on a Sunday.

(In case its your first time buying, dont forget to ask for your free mug) ;-)

How does the Sony STRDG820 compare when playing movie DVDs (only £229 - tight budget as my system is 15+ yrs old and crawling towards hi-fi heaven)

Ok- So whats drawing you guys to the Onkyo 606 rather than this beautiful Yamaha AX763?

I've just been into Chester and they agreed to the price after seeing this thread. Woohoo!

I got the amp and a set of Tannoy speakers for less than £550! I can't wait to hear "The Dark Knight" in 5.1 (Blu-Ray too).

As far as I am aware the soung quality on the 820 can be a bit hit and miss with some reporting interferance. The 820 does not upscale either.
