A huge ratings success for ITV, Only When I Laugh was written by Eric Chappell (Rising Damp, Home to Roost) and directed by Vernon Lawrence (Duty Free, The Bounder). The series starred James Bolam (Beiderbecke), Peter Bowles (To the Manor Born) and Christopher Strauli (Raffles) as three congenital hypochondriac layabouts forever haunting the ward patrolled by the droll Doctor Thorpe (Richard Wilson - One Foot in the Grave).

Good find .. this was certainly one of the better ITV sitcoms

but, being a Geordie I'd rather you said it starred Jame Bolam (Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads) rather than James Bolam(Beiderbecke), a programme I don't even remember.:whistling:

I might buy the Duty Free DVD set too .. another good ITV sitcom

Classic 90s ? only when i laugh was late 70s early 80s and duty free was in the 80s :)

wee, it was as well . realy didnt seem that long ago when i was watching them but looking back now , i can remember i was at school when figgis, gupta & co were making me laugh.

Yeah I never did like it, but I remember me mum always watching it years ago :-D
