The Hut have reduced Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for this weekend only. It will be back at £35 (PS3/XBox360) on Monday

As the much anticipated return of the genre-defining military conflict title, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is set to take gamers as close to war as they'll ever want to get. In a shooter that recreates the brutal reality of the modern combat experience in stunning detail, Dragon Rising will challenge players to survive the chaos and rapidly evolving situations of modern warfare in a new contemporary theatre.

Players will experience the intensity, diversity and claustrophobia of a present day conflict from the unique perspectives of an infantry marine and a Special Forces officer, each engaged against the full force of the Chinese PLA on the huge open-world island of Skira. Gameplay simulates an immense conflict between advanced forces and provides unparalleled scope with different military disciplines, vehicles and equipment for players to utilise.

'Coastal Stronghold' Mission: Assume control of an infantry fireteam, raiding a key PLA coastal defensive position. Once the PLA defenders have been eliminated, the player will have to organise their fireteam to hold the location from PLA counter-attacks, improvising defensive positions and using any fixed weapons they can find to tip the balance in their favour.
The most accessible, immersive, engaging, sandbox wargame: All 220sqkm of Skira Island is completely open to explore at any time and includes a real-time day and night cycle and weather system. Streaming technology means that the island is always there, and a huge 30km draw-distance allows gamers to see flashpoints around the island playing out as they fly, drive and walk around the map.
The biggest military toy-box ever seen in a console FPS: Players can pick up and use over 60 authentic weapons and explosives in Dragon Rising and utilise 25+ PLA and US Army Vehicles.
Action-packed co-op and single-player campaign mode: With the entire campaign fully playable in co-op with four players, gamers will assume the roles of both USMC infantry and spec ops during the intense 11 mission campaign as the war plays out across Skira Island.
Intricate attention to detail: Accurate USMC tactics and equipment are used throughout and US Marines were used as consultants during development to ensure authenticity.

Yes, look at the title.

First one was excellent. I don't know whether to get it on PC, or 360...

Just to point out this isn't made or in any way related to the original Operation Flashpoint and its creators.
(Bohemia Interactive)
Codemasters just acquired rights to the name/brand , made a game and slapped Operation Flashpoint on it.
You'll notice it doesn't say operation flashpoint >>2<< on the actual box - I recall them not being able to do this due to complaints...
I havent played the game - it could be great just take note k... ^^..

This is a damn good video, gives you a very good insight into what to expect.

Whilst correct that the devs are different it is a bit more than just slapping the name on it. Judging by the videos it looks very true to the original.

They explained the lack of '2' thing because it is new for consoles which makes sense too as many 360/PS3 owners have probably never played the original :-)
I suspect it's a bit of both ;-)

It's supposed to be a real-world war sim, for my money, there's no way they'll make it realistic on consoles! PC version on the other hand, that's acheivable, there's a mass of commands needed, more than an 8 way controller can handle!

Bohemia, the original developers have well and truly stuffed up the sequel in arma2, lets hope codemasters have sorted out a high level of quality in this version. There's even talk of Bohemia sueing codemasters over name infringements!

The YouTube vids of this do look impressive tho
#24
The other point worth noting is that codemasters also took the original 3d engine as well as the name!
#25
Things in this title that look like a let down compared to the original:

-Very limited MP numbers
-Tethering which makes for corridor style gaming (i.e. BF series is probably more sandbox than this!)
-Limited MP maps (despite devs claiming there will be more)
-No mission editors for console version

In other words, even the Xbox version of the original was more versatile than this! Disappointed and the devs slowly release more information which they know will put people off.

Yep they fell out bigtime. Shame really.

Good price, heat added, but will wait for the price to come down. I'd barely play it if I got it now anyway, with Fifa, MOW2 and Uncharted 2 all right around the corner. Might pick it up at Christmas/New Year.

From what I understand the many commands you can use are selected through a pop-up HUD, much like.. Red Alert 3 on consoles and I suppose a bit similar to Rainbow 6 LV.

From watching the videos I think i'll love it. sure the PC version WILL be better but the console version will still be a very good game and I won't need to spend £100's on PC components :-)

Being an avid PC gamer, I'll for the first time, be switching to the console version. It's compelling enough I think.

PC gaming works out cheaper as a long term investment if you're sensible. Also, games are cheaper most of the time and often by quite a lot.

How long term?

I can't think of any PC bought two years ago for the price of an Xbox 360 that would play every modern game out..

I appreciate the benefits of PC gaming but there's no denying it is a huge investment if you want to play games to the full and it would take ALOT of games to think about breaking even on the price difference :-)

You have to consider the fact that everybody who has a console generally has a basic PC that is ok for basic tasks like surfing, IM'ing and such.

Now, if they were to combine the money that they would spend on that basic PC with the money that they would spend on a console, they could get a better PC with more oomph which would enable them to play games as well as perform any basic tasks required.

Yes, it is more money up front but, as I said, you have to consider it as a long term investment and you have to be sensible.

Yeeeeeah but ya can't beat Xbox Live :-D

Nobody likes using a keyboard to use a million and one commands either, I know I don't.
