Was in robert dyas this morning and noticed they have Osram dimmable energy saving bulbs for 99p each.

Normally sell for £10-£20 each I think.

* 20w (= 100w equivalent)
* Smooth dimmable 7%-100%
* 15,000 hour life

Box says it can be used with "most" incandescent 60W-500W dimmer switches, would have bought one to try it out but I don't have any dimmers any more!

Might be worth reading the box and buying one or two to test out first as appparently they can be fussy about dimmer switches. I didn't think it was even possible to get CFLs that worked on a standard dimmer.

They also had loads of standard CFLs, both Philips and Osram (Osram ones are harder to find cheap), all wattages, 10p-15p a bulb.

Phoned both Brighton & Hove stores, none at either. Good luck if you manage to get some.

do they do the small bayonet caps

do they do the small bayonet caps

I think Osram only make these dimmable ones with normal full-size screw and bayonet.
my store only had them in bayonet

looks like it might be old stock clearance or something because when I looked them up on the Osram site, they have newer looking boxes now.

Check that your dimmer is suitable to use with this bulb. I've had dimmable CFLs and whilst they worked initially, the dimmer unit failed prematurely. The bulb was unaffected but one of the two dimmer transformers went bang. This happened with all new wiring and a brand new dimmer unit, mine were MK dimmers, which even for the ones rated 60W-500W now say they are not suitable for use with dimmable CFL. Which wasn't the case when I had the bulbs installed.

I just installed a standard dimmer (100w to 400w) and the instructions said they needed a minimum load. I guess a 60w dimmer would need 4 or 5 20w bulbs on the circuit to be OK (as I suppose when you dim them the wattage is reduced...) I got some normal bulbs from QVS electrical for mine. I guess the dimmer manufacturers will develop something soon?

Yeah I think that's right. Although if it is, the Osram box is misleading as it says the bulb will work on a 60-500W incandescent dimmer. The problem with going below the minimum load is normally that the lights flicker, maybe osram has found a way around this or maybe they just made an oversight? (please don't blame me if you try running below the min. load and it breaks the dimmer or bulb!)

I am pretty sure though that the minimum load of the dimmer switch is calculated using bulbs at full brightness, so you'd only need 3x 20W bulbs for a dimmer that has a 60W min. load.

do not buy these bulbs! they are terrible! yep theyr fine wen they get on but it is literally 3-5 seconds after pressing the light switch and they have finally started to come on! i would get the philips ones instead, they are far better and light up instantly! i have used about 30 of the philips energy saving bulbs, 2 of the morrisons brand energy saving bulbs, 10 of the asda brand (GE) bulbs and 3 of the osram bulbs and i am so glad i only bought 3 coz theyr useless! even at this price! just pay a tiny bit extra to get asda ones coz theyr cheap and good!

Loads of these in Guildford, I bought a few but then saw the comments above - I'll try one and take the rest back if they are garbage.
