I'm sure these aren't the best in the world..... but for a quid it's worth a punt I reckon.

Are they made from lavatory roll tubes?

I would imagine if you are going to a sporting event or something similar having these is better than having nothing?

I have one of those and for £1.00 it does ok job. You can not expect much but from it but I guess it depends for what purposes do you need it for. I normally take it with me when I go for a walk just to look around. I'm not sure how effective it will be for bird watching, but you can always try it in-store to see how far it zooms.

5x30 is not the "magnification". I know it says that on the box, but the power is 5 (magnifies by 5 diameters) and the 30 is the objective size in millimetres. These are probably opera glass type, Gallileian optics, with no prisms, using a negative lens for the eyepiece. 5 power is about the maximum that can be achieved with this type of optic. There is no "zoom" involved.

You need much better quality for bird watching. These won't be sharp enough on the detail.
