OVIVO Mobile free monthly allowance increased again up to 150mins/200txts/500MB data for one off payment of £15.00

JonTJonT

OVIVO Mobile are a great little firm offering free SIM only contracts in return for a couple of seconds of adverts when you connect to the internet over GPRS. They run over the Vodafone network and they have just increased their monthly free package to 150mins, 200 texts and now 500MB data so it is certainly a viable package for a low to medium user. All you have to do is buy the SIM card for £15 and the rest is free! If you use more than your monthly allowance then you have £15 of call credit with your SIM (which you can top up - calls are 8p/min, texts are 5p each).

They have some higher use packages with associated monthly costs as well but the real value is in their free package. The adverts really aren't a problem.

Here's the blurb...

Seems the adverts use very little of the data allowance. Just found this Tweet on the Ovivo website:

Michael ‏@aboyonline 12 Jun
@ovivomobile does the advert on opening a browser typically use about 3mb!? My data quickly disappears because of this if its the case?

OVIVO Mobile @ovivomobile
@aboyonline no very low levels of data, typically less than 30-40kB

I wonder what will happen to Ovivo when Vodafone merge with O2, this will happen by 2015.

This is not happening. Stop spreading lies. Voda and O2 are merging network infrastructure but will still be two separate companies. Similar to what EE/Three have been doing for the past few years. Saves costs for Voda/O2 etc... This will not affect Ovivo in any way who use Vodafone.

To those who are unsure how it works let me explain fully.

You pay £15 one off cost for a pay as you go sim card from Ovivo.
When you receive the sim card you activate it.
Ovivo then credit the £15 you paid upfront on to your top up account
Every month you get 150 mins/200 texts/500mb to use for free.
If you go over your allowance of say 200 texts or 500mb that is when you start paying.
The payment for out of allowance comes out of your £15 credit.
You can top up anytime you want.
Every month the 150 mins/200 texts/500mb refreshes for FREE, you do not need to top up/have credit to get these allowances.
The allowances refresh on the first of every month for example

So you're basically paying £15 one off for a free sim card that you can use every month. So if you're a low user and use less than the allowances above then this is perfect for you as you never need to top up again and can just use the free allowances. The only time you need to top up is when going over the allowance or needing to make a premium rate call/text.

It uses the vodafone network so if you get signal on vodafone, Ovivo will work fine for you.
It sounds too good to be true right. Well it's not, they pay for it through advertising on your phone internet. It's not intrusive at all and is a small price to pay for free allowances.

The company have been around for a while and seem to get good user feedback (for the obvious reason that it's a free service). They have tweaked their deals from time to time by lowering minutes or even increasing the allowance like they have done just now. All in all it's a very good service and for what you get now it's amazing. Even if they reduce the data back down to 400mb it's still a good deal in my eyes.

You cannot get a nano sim. (you'd have to take the risk and cut it yourself)
EDIT: Turns out you can get a nano sim. Sorry for any confusion caused.

here's the deal with Ovivo to stop all the confusion

You pay £15 to buy the SIM and you get that £15 to use as PAYG credit.

You dont have to pay another penny after that if you dont want to. (Ive had a SIM with them since last June and never topped it up)

Each month you get a free allowance, at the moment it is 150 mins, 200 texts and 500 meg of data (this may go up or down in time)

if you exceed any of your allowance in a month then you fall back to their PAYG rates, which as very competitive and this uses your PAYG balance. 8p per min for calls and 5p for texts etc

If you balance drop to £0.00 then you wont be able to use the PAYG facility you have exceeded until you top up with more PAYG credit.

They will not charge your bank or credit card if your PAYG credit falls to £0.00. You just get a warning that you have a zero or cose to zero balance when you make a call.

Every calendar month on the day your SIM became active, your free allowance resets back again.

    Here's an example:
You use all your voice minutes in the first few days of your free allowance but you still have texts and data to use up.
For the rest of the calendar month until it resets back you will pay 8p per min for any more calls you make . Should your balance fall to £0.00 you wont be allowed to make any more calls unless you top up again. Text and data usage will continue to come out of your free allowance until you use any of them up.

Just recently they changed their system to include 30 day contracts if you want more than the free allowance.
This is a rolling charge every month and again if you go over your allowance then you drop back to their PAYG rates. Again they wont charge you if your balance falls to £0.00. You just wont be able to use whatever you have exceeded (is calls, texts or data)
One importnat point to note about these 30 day contracts is that you DO NOT get free allowance.
So for the IBIS you only get 250m, 400t and 750MB only, you dont get the free allowance of 150m, 200t and 500MB as well.

to recap, you dont have to top up at all, ever after you have paid your £15. From what i have gathered, you do have to make at least one call at least every 60 days to keep the SIM active.
If you are going to be using ovivo as your provider from now one it is probably worth keeping a balance of say £10 on your PAYG credit just incase you ever exceed your free allowance.
One point to note is that you are not warned about exceeding any of your free allowance and if you exceed your data allowance, PAYG rates for data are high and will eat away your balance in zip time without your knowledge!

    Hope this helps

Yes I have been a customer since beginning of the year. Great service - it is the Vodaphone network. I use it for both phone and tethering to my laptop when on the train. Cannot fault it so far especially as it does not cost anything after initial payment!

I am in Greece now and having problems with it, roaming is active but yesterday evening decided to stop working.
Get no signal for calls but if I turn the mobile network on I'll get h or 3g for browsing, but still an X of no signal.
    Weird.
Ovivo are quite quick responding your quires but they haven't come up with a fix yet.

I used them when the tariffs were smaller and they we great for me, excellent customer service and general coverage - signal / data was fine. I'm going to go back after my current contract finishes.

Works fine for me, my whole family is on it now.

Only issue is most of the time it settles on Edge speed instead of H for me, so a little slow, but for basic stuff like reading twitter & news it's perfectly fine.
