Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, The Pacific is an epic ten-part miniseries from HBO and the team that made Band of Brothers.

The Pacific tracks the intertwined real-life stories of three U.S Marines, Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War 2. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

Excellent price, excellent series.

Just watching this on Sky now. I read a lot of people saying that it was nowhere near as good as Band Of Brothers but I think its great so far.

Also quite educational, apart from Pearl Harbour I didn't know a lot about all the other stuff that happened over that way. At school I only learnt about the European part of WW2.

It's not as good as Band of Brothers by a long shot.

The production is far lazier, a common occurrence when a show's producers are aware of its success - more money, less heart. The characters are far less developed and the story arc's just a bit flat overall.

Obviously somebody will disagree - but unlike BoB this just had no rewatchability, so there's no need to own a box set.

Personally I think this is why it didn't live up to the hype or followed in the footsteps on BoB...The Pacific, visually, just looked the same in every episode - Bright sun, jungle, beach, jungle, beach, rain and so the story and characters needed to be carry the series - by episode 5 I was struggling to identify each character.

could not get it to this, Loved BoB but found this long winded and no real character development, just didnt care towards the end and i had no idea who was who, as mentioned before would not rewatch .

Yep I couldn't get into this either and I loved BoB , This is also 19.99 in blockbusters in Exeter

a big issue is the pacific campaign itself, lots of d-day invasion of beaches whilst island hopping the the Japanese main islands. hence lots of samey sand, beaches, jungles, not really any different seasons as in summer/winter it was either lots of sun or lots of rain hence all of the episodes are quite samey so it goes on and on and on.... like the campaign itself - very repetitive. in that respect subtly clever.
the character development is not there because the americans were forced into the war (pearl harbour) so they had no preparation/training. because of this you dont get to know characters and how the interact before battle. and the campaign lasted more or less 4 years.
in comparison to bob the allies were preparing for overload for 2-3 years and the campaign took 11 months.
the pacific is not as good a watch but to create an accurate historical miniseries must have been hard.

It was SUCH a disappointment this series - but essentially the whole campaign was pretty dull (though tragic, obviously) and the above post sums it up very well indeed.

Beaches and palm trees do look nice in HD. I'm going to go with the theory that the entire series was meant to just pimp Sky's HD launch.

Except for the fact Sky HD was launched in 2006 and The Pacific was shown in 2010.....

Does this have that weird stutter effect thing due to it being an American TV show? I have Band of Brothers on bluray and that does the same thing, i have read up about it and its something to do with the USA frame rate different to ours?

Good price for the collectors tin ;)

But as others have said very disappointing compared to the wonderful Band of Brothers, Heat added

I found these mini series disapointing.. Have you seen how long the intro is, it lasts for nearly half of each episode..

Always the same old "not as good as band of brothers". Brothers is a excellent series without question, no doubt, but the pacific is not its sequel.

The pacific is excellent in its own right, if you're aware of the subject matter then the pacific is exactly how it had to be, the only way it could be.

Try and appreciate each on its own merit .

Thankyou , at last the record has changed . The Pacific is a great series in it's own right and looks even better in HD .

Hi

well I own both bluray sets and yes BoB is a better production and storyline for the characters. You got more into the team spirit with BoB.

Does this mean Pacific is bad, no way! BoB was just too good.

I watched all the Pacific over two evenings and enjoyed all of it including the special features and maps etc and first hand accounts.

BoB 10/10
Pacific 8.5/10

simple....... just buy it :3

I have the bob steel box and would love to add this but will wait until it drops to £15

I totally agree with what you said. I still watch Band of Brothers to this day but I have no interest in re-watching The Pacific. It did just feel flat compared to BOB. None of the episodes, in The Pacific come near to the brilliance of 'Bastogne'. The whole story of the weaponless medic, his comrades, the nurse and the outstanding combat scenes made that episode special :) Good price for The Pacific though

I've legitimately addressed the reasons I felt this series is lacking - don't you dare accuse those of us who didn't enjoy it of being ignorant of the events. It's the spiritual sequel to Band of brothers in that it involved a large portion of the original production team, so comparisons are entirety within merit.

Whether you enjoy it or not is subjective, but this isnt the only way it could be - as testified by the vast amount of other films and books that touch upon the subject!

the reason that a lot of people find this inferior is that BoB was based on a lot more information than the Pacific.

they had a whole companies worth of memoirs to work with in BoB, hence the larger group of featured characters and more depth. the Pacific was based upon the memoirs of 3 particular people, who are the main 3 in the show (Basilone, Leckie and Sledge). there id therefore more focus on them than the rest of the company, hence the flakier storylines.

I have still enjoyed watching it on Sky Atlantic though and am hoping for it to become cheaper on 'old school' DVD soon

great price, thanks op

There's a serious lack of character development to say the least. As someone else said its hard to identify them after a while. Bit disappointing given how brilliant Band of Brothers is.

brill deal just what i needed for my hubbys birthday and going off this thread it might be worth buying bob too as we have never seen this oO xx
