Is this touch screen? Anyone got one? Any good?

These are great , i have had one for a few years ,can sync with your pc with a standard usb cable ,you can also download simple games ect.

Comes with built in battery charged via usb or adapter. Runs Palm os applications.

Difficult to get to work with vista , i have tried many times but fails to sync.

Uesit has a touch screen but you use the supplied stylus to operate it. It has its own handwriting recognition facility using the bottom portion of the screen. Its an organiser and syncs with a PC to coordinate appointments, calenders, notes etc. There is a huge variety or progams available to use including games which can be donwloaded and added to it (memory dependant). They are easy to use and reliable but this is a basic model with a mono screen with no backlight. It would be a good gift for a youngster starting out on the road of using organisers/handhelds.

Ive had a couple of Palms and got on with them well but the Palm Operating system isnt being developed anymore with Windows Mobile now having taken over. Personally Ive always though the Palm OS was more reliable.

As an organiser, gadget, simple game player its a bargain. Just dont expect an iPhone.

This is like an original Zire - do they even make these anymore?

The battery life on these must be pretty good with the mono screen.

My last Palm device was the good old v1 Tungsten|T when it first came out. I remember modding it so I could take advantage of the built ROM area to able to install apps there as well

Wow great find. Guessing that Woolies found a palette in the warehouse !? Hope the battery hasn't perished as just ordered 2 - one as a replacement for my c8? year Palm V and one as a replacement for folks c7? year Palm Vx both of which have dodgy digitisers (design flaw!).

To think I paid over $300 for my very first Palm Pilot (can't recall if it was 1000 or 5000 Profesional now, studying the Wiki pages on it) when I saw it at Comdex in Las Vegas in the mid 90s and tracked one down to the local Staples, sigh sigh sigh.

Lovely nostalgic link here

and I remember ONLY TOO WELL putting that Graffiti sticker on the back of mine - and it getting dogeared just like that photo! And you tell today's iPhone 3G'ers that we oldies had bleeding gadgets too and they just don't believe you!

Still got a couple of Vx models somewhere & struggling to think what you could do with this that you can't do with even a basic mobile phone.

Wow. The picture looks like the original Zire! But I'm guessing it's more likely to be the more recent Zire 21, as they stopped making the original years ago?

Well there's a clue in the 2002 date on the display. I'm just a BIT worried about the battery condition if they are that ancient, but hey it's £10. Used to cost that much for a pack of styli :)

AND I've wanted a Palm OS beyond v3.3 for nearly a decade and never been tempted to give Palm (or whatever brand/name/label they want to operate under this week) $70 for it!

Review here claims battery life of around 30 hours use.

The review also likens it to a "blast from the past" - & the review was written in 2002....

Anyone know how much coal this uses per hour to run?

Interested to know how you know that ?

The UPC & Catalogue #s given by Woolworths seem to tally just to "Zire"

Will be pleased if you're right of course!

Out of stock now guys.

I think it will be the same as this one :

Mon: Just had an email saying my two have been despatched so should know what Zire etc soon!

Tue PS:
Unfortunately they don't say HOW, just it's "been dispatched, please allow a couple of days for these to arrive" - didn't arrive with postie this morning anyway.

I have had mine working with vista for 1 year , you will nead to download palm desktop 4.1.4 that has the usb driver (not the latest version) and perhaps a hotfix from microsoft if it does not sync properly.

Dont plug in your palm until you have installed the palm desktop software else vista will install the incorrect driver!

Took me ages to get mine working properly until i found the hotfix from microsoft!

Had my two delivered this morning: rather poor packaging - ie just a tough grey plastic mailing bag around them, no aircap etc; but more concerningly one of the two's blister packs was NOT new - someone had torn it open at some stage in the last 'n' years and removed all the manuals/CDs although all the 'hardware' looks new.

Phoned Woolies on their 0844 number and was told no problem return to local store & get a refund in next 28 days. Will wait and see if/how the all new one performs before deciding - as both I/folks have Palm Desktop 4.1.4. (which I think IS the latest version?) working already - the HotSync Manager part shows 4.1.0 - that works Serially (I too remember various glitches installing it initially on Vista but got there in the end) - hope it will USB too.

If you are after one of these (no idea if still £10 in store, my motivation was to see if I'd be able to get a new/complete one as warehouse 'empty' now) seems there are 3 stores in UK still with them: High Wycombe, Rugby and somewhere I'd never heard of.

Mine's on its 3hr charge at the moment - well I assume it is - no visual indication that it is ?!?!

PS: Charged up okay and delighted to say it HotSync'd first time : when USB'd to Vista HomePremium it auto installed some driver software and then HotSync asked me to confirm ID - I used the same as for my v.old Palm Vx and it chugged away for a bit and now seems fine with all my data on it! Did a bit of housekeeping as somehow it was clever enough to have transferred all my old extra Palm OS Apps, several of which I don't need/use any more.

FYI: Mine came with Palm OS v4.1.2 on it - and Palm site says that's it - ie no updates. For a £10 delivered the New one was a complete bargain: might ask Woolies for discount on the incomplete one to keep it too.

Did you use some specific IR software on it?

I have a Palm device (Tapwave Zodiac 2) and I've always wanted some IR software for general purposes, but never wanted to splurge on some payware.

Can you recommend that plumber?

I received mine 2 days ago. Connected to mains, installed the software, learnt Graffiti, and put some data and date/time settings. For £10 it would serve my purpose of basic PDA function (addressbook/organiser).
Unfortuanately I found that it would not charge up, despite being connected to mains for 24 hours. It loses all the data and starts up again from the first boot up screen only when connected to mains.
I have to return it, I think the rechargeable battery is knackered. Problem is, I sort of fell in love with it, and wish it would work somehow. Funny that I have used few PDA/smartphones before with all the bells and whistles, but never found one before so easy to use!
#24
I had mine delivered to my local (24 mile round trip) Woolies and picked it up yesterday.
Unfortuanately I also found that it would not charge up, despite being connected to mains for several hours. It loses all the data and starts up again from the first boot up screen only when connected to mains.
These have obviously been kicking about a warehouse for some years and the rechargeable batteries have failed.
I now have another 24 mile round trip to try to get my £10 back: :x Does anyone know if Woolworths refund on the spot at the store or will I have to wait whilst it goes through the "process"
So annoying as this looked like being a great little toy.
#25
Moderate One, I shall let you know how my refund process goes. In the past I got 'on the spot' refund, but that was for unopened item.
You can also call the phone no provided at the back and ask for online return, though I guess they would make you wait till they receive it and authorise the refund.
#26
Yep, me too ... I got two and neither will hold any charge ... batteries are dead as a dodo :-(
#27
Took mine back to the local store and got a full refund
#28
I also received a full refund today from the store.
