Just to make sure, the only gas appliance in our house is the boiler so should it be placed as near as poss to there?

Not within 15 feet of the gas appliance is a very good idea.

The British Standards Institute produces a Code of Practice (BS EN 50292) on the selection, installation, use and maintenance of CO alarms. It says that "It is not possible to give specific guidance on the exact location of a CO detector." It suggests that if it is mounted on the ceiling, it should be at least 300 mm from any wall. If mounted on the wall, it should be at least 150 mm from the ceiling but above the height of doors or windows.

If the alarm in fiited in the same room as the appliance, it should be installed between 1m and 3 m (as measured horizontally) from the appliance.

It is quite clear that Carbon Monoxide alarms should NOT be fitted in the following locations:

Where it can be obstructed by furniture.
Above a sink or basin.
Next to a door or window.
Next to an air vent, extractor fan or similar.
In very cold or hot rooms below - 5 C or above 40 C
In any enclosed space or cupboard.

If you are fitting one of these don't treat it like a smoke alarm as carbon monoxide is heavier than oxygen so fit it at a fairly low level

Why give false information when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about? These need to be fitted high up, like the manufacturers instructions tell you (_;)

i have received mine today and in the instructions it says

"your co alarm may also be placed on a table top, be sure the alarm is placed no more than 1 meter from the floor.

having said that further up the page it says 1.5 meters:|

Don't do it. I had two of this exact type and they kept giving random false alarms of 999PPM. Caused my family and I a whole lot of sleepless nights. You have been warned.
Perfect timing, comes just as my current alarm hits it's expiration date of 5 years! :-)
Great price. Just ordered. Been meaning to get one for a while and this just the nudge I needed. Thanks OP.
great price. i just bought this last week for £25
These are good and that’s a fair price, for what little they cost, every home should have one, I use mine because I have open fire both indoors and in my workshop and not had a problem, I have used them both around a year now.

Hello All,

A Carbon Monoxide detector does not detect GAS, it only detects Carbon monoxide that is given off by: Gass Cooker Grills, Gas Fires, Parafin Heaters and even Log Burning Fires etc, etc, which are not correctly fitted. You can buy a can of Carbon Monoxide to test these products. This type of product must be the best investment anyone can make 'To Save A Life'., and at this price it is a steel.
Yes, OK , I did work in this industry before I retired some 8 months ago, but please don't take my word for it, Google It...!!!, It may save your life.
