Not quite a true SLR, but a small 4/3 one with decent image quality and the potential to change lenses.

I ordered this having considered the Olympus PEN E-P1. This one does not cost over 700 pounds, comes with a view finder, a flash and a flip out screen.

I think it is a good deal, I have been looking at these kind of things for a while now and this offer pushed me over the spending edge.

Voucher code: G1SLR50

£439

Topcashback brings the cost down to £423.63

Free delivery can be arranged by picking slots, it is also possible to collect in store if you can find one. There was one in Manchester last time I looked.

I'm not voting either way for the deal, but there are so many better camera's to buy for the money.

Really?
Would you care to provide some evidence in the form of links and review because for just over £400 you are getting a hell of a camera in the G1.

The micro 4/3 system looks like the only serious contender to the SLR hegemony so the G1 carries with it a certain degree of future proofing. That and the fact that even though it is smaller than a DSLR and much lighter, the images it produces are of equivalent quality.

Personally, I would save some extra pennies and go for the GH1 which includes HD video recording as well, but if you are looking for a great camera with interchangeable lenses for a cracking price, the G1 may be right for you.

It's important to hold this camera in your hand before you buy. It is too small for my hands. Another thing I don't like about this model is the laoud shutter noise. It hasn't got a mirror box but the shutter noise is louder than a Canon or Nikon DSLR. A further important point for me with Panasonic is that they now block all third party batteries, which means you have to buy the expensive Panasonic batteries. If you can live with those shortcomings and don't do too much available light or action photography it's an ok camera.

Is this camera the 'new' LX3?

Thanks Geeza

Well my camera arrived today and so far I am really really impressed. The only failed photos have been experiments in manual modes without reading the manual.

I'm a big guy and the camera admittedly would feel better with a slightly bigger grip, but I find it very usable and have no issues. I am used to it already. The only other SLR I have is a Praktica BMS and that has no grip. The battery issue is one I was well aware of having read the forums on dpreview, bad panasonic, why? Well, obviously for money.. but really? I have not checked the firmware yet on my unit, but if it is the one before the battery saga I won't upgrade.

I am coming to this camera from a Canon A640 which I used with the CHDK firmware. I really love the flip out screen and live view on the new purchase. The ability to review images using the view finder outside is also a nice feature, for times when even this good screen might be hard to see. Great AEB setting on a dial.

I'm sure I will find some niggles, like with everything, but I am very happy with this camera. It will be a good travel camera.

* This is a completely different type of camera to the LX3. If you are considering that you might want to look at the Canon S90 which is out in October. Just a quick note, the LX3 is 300quid at the Manchester airport duty free dixons.

hey mate.. welcome to the world of DSLR's!! the 4/3rd Std is brilliant and Panasonic is a gr8 piece of kit. Let me know when you find some cheap thrid party accessories.. like Flshes, Lenses and the likes. I have an Olympus and finding lenses (reasonable priced) is very difficult!! But they are gr8 cameras!! Im savng up for 14-140mm Lens for around £260!! Shud have it by xmas

Er... the 14-140mm lens costs £699 at the moment, I very much doubt it will drop down to £260 in a couple of months' time!

S90 does'nt have a viewfinder (nor does the LX3) ; it so annoying and spolis (for me) what looks like a well thought out compact camera.. strange that an ixus 850 is still soo much better than anything on the today for a compact with a viewfinder and good resolution.....

Actually you are right I meant the 18-180mm.. I keep getting confused between the Pana and Oly lenses. Having said that, one day.. and I mean one.. day.. I'll be rich enough to buy the 14-140mm!! lol
