They will not have the outright flexibility of the full blown DLSR (not far off though), but i had a D700 and a 50D and sold them last year for a GF1. I took more pictures with the GF1 simply because it did 90% of what the others did, but in a package small enough for me to always have with me, rather than it sitting at home in the camera bag.
Both seem to be really good cameras.

I really do doubt you'd get a 550D with lens at this price... You'd be more likely to get a 1000D for this price. Please prove me wrong tho and I will snap one up! I do agree with you that the experience offered by a true SLR is far superior to that offered by one of these cameras (and yes, I have used both) - the fact this has an EVF should be enough to put anyone off in my opinion...

Yep - I have a 30d which I love but due to its size, I often use my little Panasonic FS3 and am thinking of getting something inbetween.

Depends on what you are shooting. If you hold up a DSLR in a public place, people either 'freeze' or question your motives. With somthing of this style no one bats an eyelid and carries on as normal. Great for candids and situations where DSLR are frowned upon.
