I've been looking at this very camera, the amazon price is good but you can save about £5 by going here http://www.fotosense.co.uk/panasonic-dmc-fz38-digital-camera.html

It's now reduced to £235 plus £5.99 postage at fotosense and some of the FZ38 camera bundles look good value

Fantastic camera.

Avoid Fotosense* like the plaque and stay with Amazon.

Superb customer service where, unusually, the customer comes first.

* Items not in stock despite assurances. Day off work waiting for promised delivery. Never came.

I received this from Amazon about two weeks ago if anyone has detailed questions about features.

Great camera, very good image stabilisation. Also decent IQ throughout the zoom range too. While its far from the best in class in terms of pure spec, when presented as a package overall, it probably is the best of the current crop of superzooms. The feature set is probably on the less ambitious side in contrast to SP800-UP, or HS10, but all it does, it does well.

I had mine for about two weeks before getting rid of it - fine camera, just nothing exciting. (upgraded from FZ18 to this, then FZ50) I'd seriously recommend a smaller TZ7, unless you do need manual mode, and the extra zooms, a compact body makes so much more sense. In the end I found it to be too hefty to carry around enough.

It's been this price for quite a while now, it's reasonable price to pay, just not exceptional. Panasonic tends to refresh the FZ series every summer - bare in mind before you getting one, the FZ48 would almost certainly render this model outdated if you could wait a while. Then again, there are always better stuff around the corner, if you wait, you'd wait forever. :)

Still over-priced in my opinion - I have one and the photo quality is no better than much cheaper compacts. Unless you desperately need the 18x zoom and RAW capabilities then I agree with Quicklite a small compact zoom like the TZ7 will be cheaper, more convenient to use and take just as good (and hopefully better) photos.

Got mine for £192 back then. Long story.

Also noticed that the initial zooms zoom makes a huge difference in framing, but when you get over 10, you'd need to zoom in alot more to make samilar magnification. The difference 12 and 18 isn't necessarily as one may think.

wombat6025's got a great point - even though FZ38 is much larger, it's sensor is the same sized as the compact series, which is imo a waste of a bigger body - really hope they'd have used even larger sensor. That said, panny do make pretty decent small sensors.

TZ series currently also have wider zoom at 25mm, as oppose to the classic 28mm on this - I'd be happy to sacrifice a bit long range for a wider lens, not to mention the smaller body.

cheaper at camerbox & buyacamera, but for a few quid you can't beat Amazon CS, still would not say a "great" price. interesting what the prev comments have mentioned about the sensor /manual controls compared to the TZ7 as I have been looking at the FZ38 for a while, & just bought the TZ7 to replace my existing compact...

is it worth the extra to go to a G1 ( I know it has no video) ?

Had an fz50 but dropped it. Is this a good replacement?

Great price for a superb camera - have one myself and wholeheartedly think it is a really capable camera; doesn't get much better unless you head towards SLRs
