Final Review by Cameralabs.com: They gave it an 84% approval rating

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 final verdict

Its revealing three-quarters of the cameras weve compared the FZ8 against here all cost around 50% more. The simple fact is theres no real competition for the FZ8 at its price range other than Panasonics own Lumix TZ3, which as discussed above is aimed at a different kind of market. In short the FZ8 represents excellent value for money and while its understandably missing some of the sophistication of these higher-end models, it really can compete and in some respects even beat them.

Smearing at low sensitivities remains the biggest problem facing the FZ8, but its one which applies to almost any non-DSLR in todays market and as weve mentioned, models like the Sony H9 actually have it worse. So this aspect of image quality aside, there really wasnt much we didnt like about the FZ8.
Panasonic FZ8 silver - pop up flash

Ultimately wed have preferred better wide angle capabilities and a flip-out screen, but the latter is unlikely to make it onto the FZ8 line given its a key up-seller for the FZ50. 28mm wide angle capabilities though are something wed expect to find in a successor given Panasonics almost global adoption of the feature and heavy marketing across its range.

Assuming flip-out screens are reserved for the flagship model and theres nothing they can do about image quality, our only fair complaint against the FZ8 is lack of true wide angle. Thats really about it.

So if youre seriously considering the FZ8, you need to ask yourself two questions: are you the kind of person who likes studying images on-screen at 100%, and will you find the 36mm wide angle restrictive? If you answer yes to either, then youll probably be disappointed by the FZ8, but if the answer to both is no, then the FZ8 offers a highly compelling proposition and almost unbeatable value. As such we can confidently award it our Highly Recommended rating and rank it as the best affordable super-zoom camera around.

not for me, but this is a great deal.

To be honest a pretty poor camera... Let down by it being very noisy even at low ISO's...

Also with these 'silver' versions they are simply spray painted... and once knocked are the usual black plastic underneath...

Take the plunge and get a DLSR! You wont regret it!

Consider the new Canon SX1 IS. Excellent reviews. It's inbetween a compact and DSLR. But significantly takes full HD video (there are some fantastic examples on youtube) and has a great lens , upto 20x).

I have a Canon S5 IS which I love (but only VGA video and not great at ISO 200 up....all fixed in SX1!). I'm waiting for the SX1 to drop in price (only released in Nov/dec 08 so still around £350).

Well I own a Silver FZ3 and no marks or wear to the finish yet. OH ALSO has the same and likewise.

I always learned that cameras were delicate bits of gear so they are always taken care of.

Re this Camera - I think it needs to be sub £100 to make any sense.

That is a very old model, the latest is the FZ28, which was itself a replacement for the FZ18, that in turn replaced the FZ8.

Thanks Hotyoda, running a Fugifillm S8000fd at the moment but would like to have more control with my fingers and go the whole hog to SLR, (fiancee is nodding her head in agreement?)

yeap deal is good but better --can anyone suggest a real compact goodie ixus style

I bought a 400D about 2 years ago to replace my trusty FZ5. Unfortunately I still use the Panasonic a lot more...it's easy, practical, light weight, fast, and to my eye, takes pretty good pictures. I've never really gone to the effort of learning how to use the SLR the way I intended. For most point and shoot photographers, I think something like the FZ8 it plenty good enough, and an SLR is a bulky piece of over kill.

Yep I can see that....just check out the HD videos though. Best thing about it is you can snap as you take the vid. If it's just stills your want then DSLR it is.....oooohhhh but the HD video!
#11
HD is great if you have a telly that can play it ! Snap and vid at the same time sounds good, cant even zoom and vid on the Fugi cam! is a pain ...

In the future all TVs will be HD! All I can say is having a camera which can zoom snap and take video all at the same time has been a revelation. I used to get stressed taking the stills and vid camera out at the same time...never could decide which one to use. Now it's just one camera and I start the video and snap when I need to. A pleasure. Now in HD....

The FZ18 and FZ28 didn't replace the FZ8 they were additional models. I have one and it's does most things that a DSLR does plus a 12 times zoom. It is a little noisey but this is just £149 compared to over £500 for a DSLR without this level of zoom!

You guys make me laugh.

Most electrical products are superseded by newer models. Because they're superseded, it does not mean that the previous model becomes useless or any less better. This whole website is full of electrical goods that have been superseded by newer models at one time or another. This doesn't make the products any less attractive, as the price they're being offered at is usually the deal breaker.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the purpose of this website about bringing deals to the attention of the others. Love or hate the product, it's being offered at least £70 cheaper than any other supplier. In my books, that's a deal that deserves to be listed.

We don't all wish to be professional photographers. This is a decent camera at an AFFORDABLE price.

Do excuse me whilst I just go and pick some £50 notes off the nearest tree, so that we can all afford your bells and whistles DSLR's!!

Saucer of milk to table 4 please. :-P

Precisely why I am content with my 3.1Mp FZ3

ANY compact/bridge camera will have problems with some noise at some iso settings.
But as people have said there is a hell of a lot of things compact cameras can do that DSLR's cant. Fit in your pocket is one thing!
I've just bought a TZ5 and it's lovely :)

Great camera but i would expect it to be cheaper than £150 now its over a year old.I got one over a year ago for £185.

Consider the new Canon SX1 IS...

Surprise, surprise. A £380 camera is better than this £150 one. :w00t:

The Lumix is excellent value for money, highly recommended. Check the reviews and examples images - what a pro calls "noisy" most people will never notice when the images are being shown on a monitor or TV.

Err actually that was in response to a request for some advice on a good DSLR. I wasn't comparing it with the Pansonic. You'll find alot posts which divert somewhat from the original. I generally try not to but when I think I can offer a bit of advice I try to help out.

SX1 still rocks and when this is on Play for £150, I'll be at the front of the queue.;-)
