Fair point, but the closest equivalent package for the 550D would be to get it with the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens, which would set you back in the region of £950, which is an awful lot more money.

RGB photo have Canon EOS 550D SLR + Canon 18-55mm IS + Canon 55-250mm IS Lens Twin for £799.00 and Amazon have the Canon EOS 550D Digital SLR Camera (inc 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit) for £789.98. I am currently looking for a new camera and I am having problems deciding which way to go?

I would say it probably boils down to two main things: what your photographic intentions are and your budget.

The GH1 can be regarded as a 'complete package in itself', its 28-280mm zoom is probably all you would ever need. The 550D, on the other hand, with its much more extensive range of lenses and accessories is more of a camera that will 'grow' with you, so if you are thinking of photography as a career, it is probably the best way to go.

The Canon's image quality (especially in low light) will be a little better than the Panasonic, due to its bigger, higher resolution sensor, but in most instances, it will be pretty marginal (DXOLabs rate the image quality of the Canon at '66' and the Panasonic at '64').

Video quality (if you update/hack the firmware) is arguably considerably better with the Panasonic.

Good comparison of specs. here: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_550D-vs-Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-GH1

The 'equivalent package' for the Canon is several hundred pounds more, which needs to be borne in mind. It is also always advisable to try out the feel of the camera before you buy, as you may find one feels right for you and the other just doesn't.

Finally, you may also want to consider the Nikon D3100 and the Pentax K-x. The Nikon is in many ways comparable to the 550D, but is currently available with kit lens for around £400. The Pentax doesn't have full HD video, but takes excellent photos and is available from Currys for £374 (with code 25POUND) with kit lens and 50-200mm telephoto.

Hope this helps and apologies if any of the above is 'teaching you to suck eggs'!

No good. I wouldn't touch a camera unless it had at least 100x zoom. ;)

GH2 has just come out which is why you will see the price of the GH1 falling. GH2 is roughly £700 body only, or £900-1200 depending on which kit lens you get. All reviews ive seen so far suggest is vastly better than the GH1 or 550d.

Hi, do you have any links? All I have been able to find so far for the GH2 are 'hands-on previews', as opposed to full/proper reviews, which mostly rate it a bit better in some respects than the GH1, I've certainly never seen one that rates it a 'vastly better' than the 550D (or the GH1, for that matter). I'd love to read it, though.

hmmm, I wonder just how many people actually use their SLR cam.s asides from holidays, b-days ?

do these people who use them always in AUTO mode , really need to be so choosy about buying a specific model ?

really, the most important thing is LENS QUALITY, if you are after high quality you need a good lens

canon kit lens are not 'good' , latest ones are average , prior ones were poor

Zuiko make the best kit lenses, some of them are Canon L lens quality ( tests prove this ) so if you are wanting a SLR for all in one use , suggest an Olympus due to quality lens

GH1 is good, but overpriced, NO SLR cam will really be good as a videocamera, the handling isnt good, focus is all over the place, though GH1 is the best in this respect,

550d is great cam, but an Oly with Zuiko lens will have more detail than 550 with kit lens, regardless of resolution nonsense

nikon 3100, does video, no where as good as gh1, but maybe good enuff for occasional use, besides good video needs tripods, dollys, steady cams, etc etc , you cant just buy a gh1 or gh2 and expect video quality of what you see online with these cams

if u are after video, buy the sony camcorder with removable lens ( £ 1500 )

if u just fancy a good slr but with video to, Nikon 3100 is best value

or wait till Olympus make a model with video mode, as their lenses are the best

Oops sorry. Didn't read your comment properly!!

I have been looking at a few places. Obviously lots of places have lots of different opinions. Here are a few.None of them actually compare it to the 550d, the see it as more comparable to 60d and 7d and nikon7000d. Mainly regarding video but photos look good too on flickr. Happy reading.

Only hackable if its a model before june 2010. Otherwise the hack doesn't work and your left with average video capabilities. Most people report it as 'muddy'. If it can be hacked a lot of people say its stunning and at this price would be a bargain.

beware, there is a MASSIVE CON going on with these cams at moment

check out ;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2xlay9vrDk

YES, the GH1 body was used, but all the superb quality shots were taken with ;

Zeis prime lens costing $ 14,300 !!!!! this is stated by the person who made the film as some kind of promo for Panasonic

just how many 100000s of people have gone and bought a GH1 thinking this is the quality they can acheive ?

same goes for 5D etc, yes it was used for some adverts, but again how much were the prime lenses used, $ 10,000+ no doubt

the word DECEPTION springs to mind

by all means, they are good cams, releatively cheap for what you get, but why are they being promoted with $14,000 worth of prime lens ?

hmmmmm
#16
Given I don't know a single person across any of the main camera forums who bought a GH1 for that reason I'd say very few people (if any) have been 'conned' by that. As I would expect anyone to do when spending a decent chunk of money on a camera, I researched the GH1 in detail before purchasing it. I bought mine on release and never regretted it as it's been a solid camera bridging compacts and a bulky Nikon FX camera.

#17
well well well, I had no idea about the GH1 video being filmed with lenses of that quality-cost

but i agree with john, no deception was intended, panasonick simply wanted to impress consumers , not trick em

which is why they didnt just use the kit lens, or indeed panasonic 4/3 lens for the shoot

very honest company i say

and while we here, free nelson mandela i say

NONE LEFT at chester , checked today, sold out, computer said 12 in stock, but turns out that was for the G1 model

currys seem to be very confused on model no.s, when I called the 0870 main hotline, they couldnt even locate the dmc-gh1 on their system, saying it didnt exist ( ??? )

they also dont seem to understand that G1 and GH1 are different models, the Chester branch had 2 GH1 boxed kits, now sold, plenty of G1s if anyone is interested

waiting for a deal on 550d now,
#24
the GH1 with the tester 13 hack is seriously good at film recording,

you can't compare it to 550d , gh1 is in a different league, this is down to the tester 13 firmware allowing 50mb/s bitrate recording, and various other pro features only found in very expensive semi pro camcorders

the 14-140 lens on the GH1 is exceptional, you would need to spend a lot on an equivalent canon lens, i dont think there is any canon lens under £ 1,000 to match the panasonics 14-140 and of course the auto focus under video record means for all non pro camera users the GH1 or GH2 are unbeatable

with the t-13 firmware, basically you are getting a GH2 camera, but for 50-60% of the price, some people even say the t-13 firmware allows features that have been disabled in the GH2

it seems panasonic built the GH1 and then would simply modify the firmware and release GH2 GH3 etc , all basically the same camera different firmware, thankfully someone has released the T-13 which means you dont need to upgrade from the GH1 for a very long time

£ 599 ? £ 695 ? it's still a bargain, you can buy a 550d or Nikon, but try focussing on it, and in low light, almost impossible, let alone watchable
#25
There were 3 boxed models at Chester, 2 ex-display. One was £500 and was arguably the best of the lot... "non pristine" apparently, well, it's now pristine thank you.
#26
Called chester, ZERO STOCK , checked with currys, apparently there is stock in the airports branches, £ 599 clearance price, may be ex-demo or with some parts missing, this is an amazing camera, a real bargain at this price,
#27
I called up as well and got the same a ken9, saying no stock anywhere. He also said that the price in the airport branches might not be £599, they might have set their own price (as they are dixons).

Will have to see if anyone else drops the price now the GH2 is available...
#28
no stock anywhere, except maybe airports, you would need to call the DIXONS stores direct

I N C I D E N T A L L Y what is the reason for posting what is about a FIVE PAGE long technical specification list under the deal title ?

5 pages long ??

thats madness, the camera title alone is sufficient, if we want the specs we can search online,

Fair point. I just copied and pasted the spec. in case it was of interest to anyone, but you're right, it is a bit excessive in this instance. I'll keep a closer eye on the size in future posts.
