Good camera for the price, almost a TZ10 (no GPS or AVCHD lite movie mode neither of which I was bothered about), but cheaper.
Has a higher resolution bigger LCD screen than TZ8 (3.0inch 460k dots) which finally clinched it, picked it up today.

Good camera.

Finally a good runout price on this DSG-only TZ8/10 hybrid. £30 less than I paid for my TZ10 with Panny rebate and I don't use GPS or video either. Hot!!!

PS 7 Day Shop have good compatible batteries for well under a tenner too.

Pixmania IS a branch of DSG !!! :) . I hate entire DSG but if I had a choice between PCWorld & Pixmania only, I would go with the first one - at leasts a chance of bringing the camera back to store instead of sending it via courier/special delivery + UK charger plug (small Pixmania goods are often shipped from France with continental plug )

Hardly suprising as it is part of the Dixons Sales Group, both seem to offer 3% cashback on home delivery when I checked, but I needed the camera now so picked up in store

It does not really matter who did it first, the most important is to provide the others with reliable information :)

i would prefer a local store purchase over online if possible , my local PCworld is a stone through away !!!

I know the pictures are great , but was wondering on the 720p video ? is it acceptable also ?

also is the battery life ok ?
#10
The video is good and is easier to edit than the AVCHD on the TZ10, though there is no HDMI (like the TZ10) port so not so easy to view on the living room TV. Battery life is very good, about 350 shots, and spares can be got for about £10 from 7Day Shop that work well.

Excellent quality (in decent light) but clearly not going to be to DSLR standard.

Well my TZ9 does have an HDMI port so maybe there are different versions

My mistake, I was comparing the TZ8 and TZ10 thinking that the TZ9 just had the bigger screen.

Would you say this is the best compact camera on the market with the best zoom and battery, not really interested in movie mode? Thanks for the advice.

To quote Carlsberg , probably

But seriously this is a good all rounder, there are cameras out there which can take more photos/charge and have higher zoom, but are weaker in other areas such as photo quality, it took me a lot of research to choose, this camera is high up in any reviews, and at this price it would be rude not to buy it

Thanks, will probably go for this.
#19
how does this perform as a low(er)light camera?
#20
Low light? Well anything above ISO400 shows some noticeable grain, as with any long zoom lens, because it can't transfer as much light to the sensor, but its got a very good mechanical optical stabiliser and I've taken some really good handheld pictures in "ambient night lighting" without flash with long shutter speeds where I had no right to expect a stable picture.

Took my TZ9 to the Maldives in Feb and it was a perfect travel camera. Used it for video (the TZ9 has stereo sound) and it took great stills - both day and night...

Very happy with it...

BTW - It has a "mini HDMI" socket on the TZ9, like the TZ10 - so you need to buy a cable with a mini HDMI plug on one end and a HDMI plug on the other - don't go looking for a full sized HDMI socket cos you won't find one...

Not bad for a compact zoom... First night I had it, on automatic, in the back garden.....

Can't be many little compacts that can make out the craters.....

1/2 second exposure, iso800, handheld - just set on automatic....

BTW - that moon shot wasn't cropped or touched up. That's exactly as it cam out of the camera - the "intelligent zoom" feature zoomed in that far so that the moon nearly filled the shot. I didn't use any digital zoom.

What would you buy the tz 8 at macro for 120 (inc vat) or this ?
#26
Thanks OP. Ordered for collection at Currys, heat added

Considered the TZ8 but felt that the bigger high resolution LCD monitor on the TZ9 was worth the extra
#28
Me to - I went for the TZ9 because of the bigger screen, stereo video sound (TZ8 is mono) and the fact that it has an HDMI output that the TZ8 doesn't.
#29
Good price, good camera. For anyone buying in store, if you get offered the Instant Replacement for £31.99 and you fancy it, then haggle. You will almost always be able to get that price down. Anywhere between £5-20 discount, from experience.

Agree. The GPS on the TZ10 soaks up the battery so I hear. This (TZ9) has got all that you realistically expect or expect to need in a compact. I've used panasonic with the leica lenses very happily for years now. I've been watching them advance in sophistication and expect a model soon that has developed rudimentary tool use and can make after dinner speeches. Dithering about one of these or an ultra compact for some time - Taken the plunge and reserved for collection tomorrow. Cheers OP - voted hot:D

Just wanted to say huge thanks + heat to OP.
I actually bought the TZ65 last year at this price following a HUKD post... unfortunately it broke about 6 months ago and I've been waiting to get a replacement at the same price (I got the 'whatever happens' instant replacement insurance with the TZ65)... wouldn't have known about this deal if it weren't for HUKD and I'm thrilled to say I now have a lovely new TZ9 to play with!

I felt like a mug when I got 'whatever happens' but very relieved I did now!
#34
picked mine up last night , it needed a software update to ver 1.1 from ver 1.0, very easy to do , just d/l file from panasonic website , place to sdcard !!

Also took a few test photos of my dog , took some close up of her face , and i can see my reflection in my dogs eye , when i zoom in my pc , i can see myself quite clearly ,

very impressed !!!

thx op

Would this work even though the TZ9 is not mentioned in the list of models? I was only wondering as it has such good feedback.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-Range-DMW-BCG10E-Replacement-Li/dp/B002HDG8RW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Thanks for the heads up for 7dayshop, I was looking for a recommendation for a specific battery as 7dayshop does not show customer reviews like Amazon does.

TZ9 is a DSG only model - a mix of spec between TZ8 and TZ10. Same battery as they and some other Lumix cameras take. I've been very satisfied with several batteries from 7 Day Shop; haven't noticed any difference from the Panny originals. Why pay more at Amazon?
