Bridging the gap between high-end compacts and digital SLRs, Panasonic's DMC-FZ8 offers a level of control close to that of an SLR, but without the need for interchangeable lenses. Perfect for photographers on the move and families who want to shoot pictures outdoors for example, the FZ8 offers an easy way to enjoy the fun of capturing beautiful digital pictures.

This 7.2-megapixel Lumix camera, features a powerful 12x optical zoom, LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens and the ever popular and indispensable Optical Image Stabiliser (O.I.S). With a joystick control for manual adjustment of focusing and exposure setting, the DMC-FZ8 offers high end specification and portability.

Indeed, a superb camera for its price. If I didn't have a Canon 400D, I snap this up without a shadow of doubt.

Is this really an excellent camera - my hubby wants a really decent one for Crimbo and we were gonna look around the shops at the weekend....

Would he be disappointed if I refused to go and said he has to wait until Christmas for his surprise!!??

I don't want him to be gutted that I bought a camera he would never have chosen!!

Help me before they all sell out!!

I posted this when this camera was up a while ago.
If you want accessories these are ideal, the samsonite case is top quality and better than the lumix In My Opinion. (But its your choice).
The prices quoted may be out of date now so take a look

I got this camera and it's great, especially with fast SD cards.
Got mine from Camerabox, its £171.98 (this was in the summer) delivered but you get a 2 year warranty.
As for accessories try 7dayshop
Case Samsonite(good one) £12.99 Room for the accessories and it will protect the camera

Spare Battery £5.49

1 gb sandisk extreme 3 £11.49

2 gb sandisk extreme 3 £16.99

I have not included p&p for 7dayshop, but if you want all the accessories you will pay p&p the once. So it's worth it.

Hope this helps anyone who's just got one or is thinking of getting one.

You won't regret it

Links updated as they didn't work, sd cards gone up 70p each, case reduced by another £2 since i got them in the summer

Depends how keen he is and how much he plans to spend. It's a good camera at the price, but it is not a "proper" DSLR - the lens is not interchangeable, the viewfinder is not real-time for better action shots, etc.

If he's got his mind set on a Canon 400D or Nikon D40 and up (which will cost over £450 in a good bargain) he's going to be dismayed - best bet is go shopping, find the Panasonic, let him handle it, see what he thinks. Then make him wait for Santa. :santa:

Superb Camera

I just took one of these on a review trip Safari to Kenya, to prove you can get stunning shots without spending thousands, it didnt dissapoint

Yes it has limitations due to the small sensor giving increased noise but it produces some stunning shots for a sub SLR camera, the lens alone 12x optical zoom Leica lens is worth the price of the camera.

Buy this you WILL NOT be dissapointed.

This is just getting it within the same best prices available elsewhere so no deal at all from Ebuyer . To be a real deal this needs to be sub £125 at least although it is an excellent camera .

I have the previous version, the FZ7, and it's amazing. The big Leica lens means lots of light gets in, so pictures are usually much clearer than those taken on my friend's camera (which is a 9 megapixel Sony). Here's a pic of my eye as an example... I've resized it down for the web of course, but you can see the quality of the photo.

Hi, I am seriously intrested in this camera, the thing is I have an old digital camera a kodak easyshare cx7330, which is ok in that the pictures are clear although they lack a depth of colour.

The question I am really asking here is will I see a big improvement in quality of picture? I would only ever be printing out 8 x 10 prints.

I would need to run this past the missus so if I did buy this camera, she would want to see that there is a big difference in quality between both cameras (as she thinks the kodak is ok) damn you hotukdeals:x , so as I value my [email protected]@ks it would have to be good step up:-D

There will be a noticeable difference on small prints but as always it's all down to the photographer. If you venture more into photography the difference in quality will be substantial.

cheers for the reply mate, i only ever point and click as i am not into changing settings or anything so i am just wanting the best auto setting camera for picture quality.

As I say not intrested in any fancy features, I would maybe push the boat out to £200 if there is a better camera but couldn't justify anymore cash.

So if there are any better than I am all ears, I have been over to dpreviews but the reviews are way to indepth for me.

aaaaaaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhhhhhh, i just want a shinny new camera:-D :-D :-D

A more user friendly review for those interested http://www.cameras.co.uk/camera-reviews/panasonic-dmc-fz8.cfm

Just got this a couple of weeks ago myself............a complete novice I am,but the camera is very intuitive.I feel that it is a camera that you can grow with, use simple auto mode and once you gain more confidence there is still plenty to keep you interested.

A fab piece of kit:thumbsup:

Dude, don't be scared to touch manual settings. I've had never owned a digital camera prior to buying a Canon 400D earlier this year. The manual features offer so much more! Honestly, go for this camera you won't regret it. It's a great piece of kit.

On my first day out with my camera, I produced the results below.

A few of my pics from playing around manual settings on a kit lens:

Excuse my ignorance but,

PC World price match against ebuyer right?

EBuyer = £157.49
PC World (According to earlier post, can't check site down) = £249

10% DIfference £9.25

= £148.24 at PC World with price match & 10% Difference

Ebuyer offer free delivery so they can't bring that into play can they?

I am going to take the plunge:-D

Will show the missus this picture, that should convince her;-)

I've had the similar FZ20 for about two years and have been very pleased with it. The three things I like most are the Leica lens, the fantastic zoom (ideal for photographing on safari) and the image stabilisation (so you can take photos at maximum zoom without a tripod). It also has a huge range of settings, most of which I haven't used. On the downside, it is rather bulky (although the FZ8 is more compact) and the price of true DLSRs is rapidly falling.
#34
whats the warranty on the ebuyer deal - looks like a few places are offering 2 yrs free.

Yes it does, and better than my jvc camcorder!!!!
#36
I presume, other than the colour/finish, that there's no difference between the black and silver versions of the FZ8 ?
#37
yes, that's right..no differance.

I think the black looks nicer though!

Just ordered one with the Kingston 2GB Elite Pro Hi-speed 50 x Secure Digital Card (£12.85). Thanks to OP.

Was going to buy the Fuji Finepix S5700 as doen to £105 on Amazon, but this is seriously tempting me, just means hitting the cc harder than I wanted to leading up to Christmas.

What settings ie modes does everyone use with the fz8.I'm having mixed results with mine mostly close ups in the house.
Also if anyone wants a spare battery try here
http://www.battery-force.co.uk/detail_URU011001A.html
very quick delivery and its uniross so a good make i bought a cheapo one off ebay for my last camera the fz7 and it lasted only 8 months.
