As the TZ6 & 7 are to be superseded shortly they'll probably drop further in price in the near future, but as of today that's a good price so hot from me.

The TZ6 is replaced by the TZ8, but it appears there are supply problems as Amazon has withdrawn the listing for the TZ8 which was released on 15 March.

The TZ7 was replaced by the TZ10 which has been shipping for a number of weeks. No price drop on the TZ7 below £219 since the release of the TZ10.

Oddly, I dropped by my local Panasonic brick and mortar store and they told me that there is still too many TZ7s in the system and the TZ8 will not be released in the UK until those volumes go down. My comment was to lower the price :-D

I have this camera - its the best digital camera I have ever owned.

I paid £170 I think from Amazon 2 months ago...

If you look at the minimum price graph for the TZ6 over on camera price buster it does wander up and down a bit:-

This camera is brilliant. I have the TZ7 model which is similar yo this but with HD (720p) video recording. Otherwise it's more or less the same unit. It's an amazing camera that takes brilliant pictures - highly recommended.

Depends on what features you're after really, the Panasonic has a much bigger zoom range and is a bit wider at the wide end for starters. That Fuji does look very tempting at that price though, more bang for the buck than the Panasonic, not sure why it wasn't voted hotter. I'm really tempted by that Fuji now, almost as good for my purposes at roughly half the price. Thanks for pointing that out.

ooohh and the Fuji uses AAs which is a plus point IMHO ( obviously not for some others!)

That deal deserve for more heat I think

I know I'm answering my own question... but wouldn't a camera with 12mp be better at this optical zoom, or is the Panasonic lens really good (speaking as someone who's looking at getting a decent zoom but needs a compact)
#12
Not necessarily. When a compact has this zoom then the quality of the sensor becomes even more important as there will be less light hitting it.
#13
I doubt if the Fuji's extra 2 megapixels make much difference to the final result. The Panasonic does well in reviews, see link below, but if the Fuji does what you want it's better value IMHO.

More megapixels doesn't mean better pictures, it just means more pixels. So many other factors make the picture quality so it is better to decide what features you aspire too (size, zoom capabilities, good camcorder, good auto or manual settings, waterproof, etc), what you think you will mainly be shooting (outdoors, indoors, low light, fast moving, etc) and your budget. Then have a good read of a few review sites to see what cameras offer the functionality you need for the money you can afford.

I've been reading several sites - so far it's not helping - just confusing me more lol

The main thing I'll use the camera for is at gigs - I want something that'll capture a good close up (therefore the optical zoom is important) but it'll also need to be relatively small.

The Panasonic has some very good reviews about it that is definitely the case, but how's the shutter lag - is it noticeable? I've currently got two Canons (IXUs70 & Powershot A480) & I've never had any serious problem with them. I also like the build quality of the Canon, but I've seen the picture quality of a Samsung with regard gig photos - I suppose I'm trying to find a happy medium (and a nice price would be a bonus... damn this site for nearly bankrupting me ;) )

It's 25 years since I did much gig photography but back then the main challenges ( other than not getting thrown out for using a camera) were getting right to the front so you can get photos without bits of other people in, and being able to take photos while all around you are jumping up and down / bumping into you etc. - although this does depend on the type of gig I suppose.

My eldest daughter has taken some reasonable gig photos just using my little Pentax compact, by being right at the front and choosing her moment. So it is possible even with a basic compact.

In an ideal world if I wad doing it now I'd want a DSLR, largely due to the very high contrast of gig lighting., and the fast autofocus of most DSLRs.

Having said that if I had to get a compact I'd be looking for the following features:-

spot metering
fast focus
fast exposure bracketing and 'frame' rate
tilltable display so the camera can be used overhead.
low sensor noise

I'm not sure if there's a compact that'll do all of that.

There probably isn't - or if there is it's £200+ plus. All seriously considering this Panasonic after reading several positive reviews on different sites. If it's due to be superseeded how likely is it thaat the price will get lower..? Say.. £140...?
#18
If first purchase from co-op, you could possibly get 2% cashback :)

I don't think the price will fall that much as they are so popular & superb cameras. The big question seems to be are the new versions really paying approx £100 more?

A couple of weeks back the Argos eBay clearance site had some TZ3s ( the TZ6's predecessor) for around 130 quid. So if you wait another year they might go that low!
