That's as maybe, however the Lumix 'bridge' cameras offer better quality lenses and features.....

Is this better camera then the Sony DSCHX5VB from amazon?

I'd beg to differ.

They're very similar cameras, the Sony also has GPS and can record Full HD Video with stereo sound (like the TZ10). Aside from those features they both have good and bad points like both have average screens.

Having owned 4 previous sony compact digital cameras all at around £170-£200 mark I bought the TZ6 last year on offer and haven't looked back since its a fantastic camera much better picture quality than my previous sonys.

the TZ8 for £150 is a good deal for a great little camera

My local tesco had the TZ7 for £125 . Some people say the TZ7 is a better camera !?

What type of photos were you taking with your Sony? I don't have any problems with mine and think that image quality is quite similar. I hadn't bought a Sony camera for a long time but must admit that I'm quite happy with this one. I did consider the TZ8 but got a cracking deal from Jessops on the Sony and I also found the shutter speed to be much quicker on the Sony also.

This offer for the TZ8 is a good one and worth going for by the way, heat for you OP.

there are lots of reviews of the TZ10 vs the sony. seems to be pretty much 50:50 so im assumimg perhaps incorrectly that the TZ8 isnt as good as the 10? So the sony wuld be a better buy?

The problem i find is when you have something o compare against. I always do when i buy a new camera, i take shots of various items be it indoors or out then compare them. I am very critical with cameras. For me image quality is paramount. I really would not rate a camera on gps. smile shot, or other gimmicks. of course it is only my opinion and i can only speak as i find, i did read all the reviews and thought wow i want this camera but if it is not as good as my current camera there is no point keeping it. It is a great price and certainly for most would be an ideal camera.

There certainly is not much between the TZ8 and the TZ7. The TZ8 has a few more pixels, but that does not translate into better pictures unless you have excellent lighting conditions and you are doing prints in size A3 or larger. So I think the TZ7 is the better offer.

Not quite the cream of the compacts. The TZ-10 is superior over the TZ-8 with quite a few more features that the TZ-8 skips on.

I hear you. My main camera is a D700 and the Sony was for my other half to use but she tends to use her mobile still but finds using the Sony quite easy. Personally I don't like or use the fluff functions provided as I'd prefer to have a less processed image and find that from trying both the TZ8 and the Sony the images produced were on a par. The one thing I did find for moving images the shutter speed on the Sony is much better which is great for taking photographs of children, animals and sport.

The video function has to be a selling point given that you can capture Full HD with Stereo on the Sony. For some it will negate the idea of a video camera for an extra few pounds.

Had it not been for me getting the Sony for £104 I personally would have looked at the TZ7 as the price is reasonable and with a similar performance to the TZ8 but at this price I would certainly still recommend the TZ8.

tz7 or tz8 , if money wasn't a factor?

Without even looking up the specs or anything I would go for the tz7 because I'm pretty sure the odd numbers are the better of the 2 they release at a time so tz8 would be newer but inferior to the tz9 (all guessing). Anyway I have a tz5 and got it over a tz6 as the reviews pointed me in that direction. Maybe the same applies to the newer generations.

Also can't go wrong with a tz, really impressed with the quality and usability of the lumix cameras

TZ7 is widely considered to be superior - not only because it has a much better screen and better video recording, but image quality is better.
#25
Thanks to all for the info, however no stock for the TZ8 near me so went for sony. I hope I made a good choice!
#26
£125 for TZ7 - WOW that's a STEAL. Paid £190 last year. Excellent camera.

cant seem to find this on tesco direct or in store, has anyone actually got it for £149.97 before they start voting hot

In that case you should really be using a DSLR. At this level of P&S, long zoom, small sensor compacts its pretty subjective and some may like the look of one over the other. It also depends on how you intend to view the images and at what size.

I have owned a couple of DSLR,s and like a good many others just never really use them very much. There is no doubt to me as you have just said that image quality is superb on these DSLR,s due to sensor size and of course lens quality. I have opted for a Canon S95 now and have sold my DSLR as i am happy with the image this can produce. I also use my older lumix that i also rate image quality to be superb plus it has a great zoom. Of course there is always a compromise with a camera and i appreciate this however i know that even a small camera can give good results.

Decisions, decisions.

From owning a TZ3, I find the photos on 10x zoom are hardly ever good enough to put on the wall, although in very bright daylight, they come close.
The photos indoors at night are another weak point. In every other respect, it's a very good camera.

From what I hear, it seems neither of these issues would be any better on the newer models.

The TZ8 is still £167 in the Trowbridge branch so not nationwide.

I have a TZ3 an would agree that low light is poor. Long zoom effectively means low light as the aperture is smaller meaning the ISO has to be pushed unless very bright and IS can't compensate for all the wobble! As far as I can tell IQ is no better on the TZ's above the 7. The 7 seems to have been the pinnacle. None of them are bad though and with these things its more about having something handy to catch the moment most of the time. Its also about what features suit you best. I've just defected to the sony HX5 rather than upgrade to a TZ10 not so much based on IQ as they are both adequate, but because I like the burst and the GPS implementation as well as HD video that doesn't suffer from the characteristic CCD vertical streaking which drives me mad on my camcorder. Its also £30 cheaper!

What Tesco did you see the TZ7? Managed to get one for £112.85. They took 10% off because there was a bit of dirt and a little mark. Apparently they had 4 but the bloke could not find it. They did have a TZ8 on display at £149.00 so it looks like its nationwide. I had to ask about the TZ7 and was lucky to get a bloke who went looking through the back rather than say thats all they had. That was Edinburgh Corstorphine store.
