The lowest price I've seen so far - Produced to replace TZ6. While it has the same price currently as TZ7, the newer TZ8 has some tricks up its sleeve:

Manual control
Updated image processing engine
Power OIS - Improved image-stabilisation
Support for SDXC cards
Higher resolution (12mp vs 10mp of TZ7)
Dedicated Exposure, and E.Zoom button
Intelligent resolution
16x Intelligent zoom
improved mode dial build quality

Con:

No AVCHD mode
Smaller, Lower res screen (230,000k vs 460,000 of TZ7)

Good price but I would still & certainly go in for a TZ7 instead of TZ8. Amazon is selling TZ7 as well for the same price.

The TZ7's 460000 pixels on a 3 inch display is far better than TZ8's 230000 on a 2.7 inch display
Continuous shooting however is far better on TZ8 with 10 frames/sec compared to only 2.3/sec with TZ7

This comparison chart may help you make your choice
http://www.camera-catalog.com/compares/popular/panasonic_lumix_dmc-tz8_vs_panasonic_lumix_dmc-tz7

I am a proud owner of TZ7 for an year now and it hasn't let me down!

Better stick with 10mp (or less) with such a small sensor.
#3
Well I've only just purchased the TZ7 so hope I havent made the wrong choice!

Can one of you please help with my problem??

I'm stuck with either this, or a 550D...

The best camera should be the one you have on you all the time, in that context this would be bettter...

Got the TZ10 for £265 + another £30 cashback from Currys the other day. Well pleased with it :)
#6
:) good to hear.

If you don't need GPS this is a nice bargain tho.

TZ10 does have more controls too tho :)

This is a good deal.

EDIT - The specs on the OPs post are not correct - the TZ8 does not actually have manual control AFAIK.
#8
Definitely.

Might hold off, and see if the FZ refresh brings anything interesting.
#9
the TZ7 is the better camera, the video mode on this one has been crippled.

it does

Ok cool - I didnt think it did! Im sure there was a reason other than GPS we went for the TZ10 - guess it was only £40 more than this overall anyway and HD video worth that IMHO.

expensive and gimmicky camera

What makes this different to the TZ7 that was dropped to £199 last month?

The TZ8 is the cut down version of the TZ10 whereas the TZ7 was the 'better' version with the TZ6/TZ65 where the cut down versions. There's a more direct comparison here:

http://snapsort.com/compare/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-TZ7-vs-Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-TZ8

Although it doesn't mention the lack of avchd on the TZ8, both do have multi-aspect ratio sensors.

If you want hi def video capability, spend the extra and get the tz7.

Some people like that. Unless you have played with it and seen the quality then you wouldnt appreciate how good it is.

Decent camera, but is it also a decent £100 ish hd camcorder eg ZI 6, ZI 8, Kodak playsport ?

Thanks

I can recommend these to go with it:

I case: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/661229/panasonic-pspls1k-leather-case-7-89 which is excellent and only £7.89

And a 16GB SD memory card from play for £17.99 http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/614293/sandisk-16gb-sd-sdhc-memory-card-rr

I'd say so mainly because of the large zoom optically stabilised lens.

Btw. This does 720p. It's just it could only record the more memory consuming .mov video clip. The tz10 supports a more compressed video codec in addition to what tz8 have.

What's AVCHD mode?

I was going to get a TZ7 and now don't know whether to go for the TZ8 now or not :?

The TZ10 has GPS just for adding details to the photos doesn't it? Or can you actually use it as a GPS system whilst out and about?

Tz7 has hdmi and this don't? Right

Basically just a more efficient video codec thats all. Allows you to record the same quality of video for longer.

GPS data is stored in the exif I think, it doesn't change the image quality in anyway.

TZ7 is the better camera for many reasons. TZ10 puts too many pixels into the same sensor area = more noise. To counter this there's in camera noise reduction, which also reduces clarity. So there's in camera sharpening after that. It all adds up to a bit of a mess. Even the official demo photos from Panasonic are poor (TZ10)
+ GPS is such a battery hog you get 85 (I kid you not) shots from a fully charged camera.

I'm so close to buying that case, but it looks kinda bulky, any chance you can describe it a little more, as I can't find it anywhere else?

Does anyone know how HD video recording works on this camera. Ive tried to google around and it seems you have a recording time restriction on it of 15mins or something.
I wanted to buy this and a 32GB card so i could get atleast 2.5hrs of HD Video recording on this but :? now
#26
It's only 15mins each time, so I suppose you could always restart the recording, and keep going until your cards full.

tz7 has the efficient one

does the video of tz7 using avchd need converting that the video of tz8 doesn't.. to get playback other than via camera?

Yes and no - AVCHD will play back on the PS3 and PC as well but generally you need to transcode it to another format to be more usable. The TZ7 does offer the option of m-jpeg/.mov if you prefer it though so you're not stuck with AVCHD.

I'm confused as to why they'd make the TZ8 with a less efficient video option :? Still not sure which one to get. I'm mainly wanting either of these for the zoom. I attend alot of concerts, but not always from good seats!
