Good find, further looking on amazon... found TZ8

personally I would buy the TZ8 for about 15 quid more...

From the reviews i've seen of the TZ8, most reviewers seem to prefer the TZ7, despite the TZ8's better resolution, the TZ7 seems to produce slightly better pictures.

This being an example:

Thats why I bought a blue TZ10 for 270.00 from photoscence just loved the colour.

Glad I did as well, as no blur when zooming like the tz7

Awesome Camera for a great price.
#10
gutted, just paid 199 :-(
#11
Is there any function on these cameras (TZ#s) to control the 'depth of field'?
In a dilemma whether to buy an SLR or these ones?
Any pro advise?

I'm not sure the TZ8 does HD video? I'd rather save £15 and have that feature.

Usually dof is done by changing the aperture, the tz7 has no manual controls to do this, I think the Samsung WB500 has manual aperture and shutter settings.

ah man just paid 199 on sunday still a great price

The Panasonic TZ10 has manual controls such as shutter priority & aperture priority, if you like the compact camera form factor then you may want to check it out but these cameras will never be as good as a DSLR with a good lens on, but you get what you pay for.
TZ10 is about £100 more than the TZ7.

The TZ10 has got manual controls, but the tiny sensor & fairly slow min aperture means controlling the depth of filed will be very limited. The LX3 has got an F2 lens, so you could probably get some dof control with that - but still little compared to a DSLR.

Best thing to do is cheat by editing the picture & making the background blurred.
I hear that Google's free Picasa software can do this easily.

Both do the same HD (720p/30fps)
#18
does in record in hd ??????

If you are looking for a Panasonic model with a blend of manual control/auto function and compactness and HD (720) movie capability, check out the Lumix FX550. I bought mine last year, excellent camera. I take a lot of photos and am very happy with it. It's not an SLR but then you can't put an SLR in your pocket and take it anywhere with you.

It says on one of the review pages above "The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ8 can shoot video in high definition (1280x720)", not sure if this is the same as the TZ7 though...

You will only get a 'proper depth of field effect' (i.e. a shallow depth of field, if that's what you are looking for) by using an SLR. All compacts have much shorter focal lengths than SLR's, so you will find almost every shot has a large depth of field unless you shoot in the telephoto range, which would necessitate taking portrait photos from a considerable distance away.

Both can record in 720P.

The TZ7 records in AVC HD Lite & Quicktime. The TZ8 only records in Quicktime.

AVC HD Lite is much more efficient.

Can someone explain the 'grey import' comment above please. I bought a TZ7 from CD-Discount last year and the camera has been such a disapointment - are grey imports of a lower quality to UK editions? Could it be I have a grey import if so? I just wanted a good quality point and click with HD movies to use with my first son on the way. The outdoor pics are not great and the indoor ones are dreadful. We've started using my five year old Sony 6mp instead for indoor pics! I would be so, so grateful for advice - I read all the great reviews for the TZ7 before buying - I don't understand how the pics can be so poor with mine. I have tried plenty of settings but mostly use the 'IA' setting.

TZ8 has a 2.7 inch screen while the TZ7 has a 3 incher! I would go for the TZ7!

I brought the TZ65 from the currys deal, but dropped it on holiday, screen cracked. Was hoping forthis to drop to something like £179.99 but just shows how well these camera's are holding value.
Anyway Im moving to DSLR's, but still this is not a bad deal.
#26
Does this model have their circuit to prevent you from buying a spare competitively priced battery off anyone else?

Very greedy attitude.

a grey import is a non uk or eu spec model. they are basically the same, but because they are packed for a different region, warranties are not valid. There might also be firmware differences, but i would not think that you got a grey import from cd-discount.

Hiya, would like to try and help becuase the TZ7 is a really good camera (ive got one) and its a shame you've gone back to using your old camera.. Maybe if you post one or two of your bad pics on this thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/571034/show-us-your-photos-2010?
Theres lots of good folks there who might be able to help :)

Voted hot btw, thats a great price

Queried this when you posted in another thread but sounds like you had a dodgy TZ7 as there's no blur when zooming and I've been using it for months now. I suspect you might be getting confused with the TZ5 which did have problems with zoom blur (which I suspect is why the zoom on both the the TZ7and TZ10 feels a bit sluggish in comparison to the TZ5)
[Moderator]#30
The TZ7 has 2 different zoom modes, 3x macro & 48x zoom.. if your zooming in 48 times then you have to be at least 3-4 ft away from the subject.. might explain the blur if you were too close :)

great price just gotta hope it arrives in once piece as we hear from other Amazon camera buyers. The box can show signs of knocks on arrival.

still one is happy with the TZ65, DSG super special for £150 + 8Gb SDHC for £12 and carry case £2 from 7day shop :D

taking really good pictures on medium priced hardware has never been more affordable. plus there is some brand snobbery to be had with these Lumix cameras :D

Not sure I can offer much help, but I'm in much the same boat. Been trying to find a new camera that takes better photos than my 5MP Sony DSC-P100. Odd that I haven't found one yet. Got my hopes pinned on the new Sony HX5, when I can find a high street store with one in stock. :)

Grey imports are sometimes a better product than uk versions but you will have warranty issues with panasonic. For indoors photos try using the party mode. This works for me, it gives much better and more even exposure than anything else ive tried.

that's a GREAT price for this camera! I already have a cannon sx200 which has some similar feature, but the specs of this camera as slightly better

A bloke on Flickr, Trensamiro, shows what can be done with the TZ7.

If you click on each pic he usually explains what settings/mode he used.
