It's a great price for a tv that was £450 six months ago, I know because I had one for 4 days. 5th day the dog throw his bone at the screen and pop it went. So if you need any spares :-)

............and don't be fooled by numbers..... this TV will give a much better picture on 42" than most other HD tv's with lots of numbers.....

This is an HD screen. The vertical resolution is 768p (ie. greater than 720).
Plasma has rectangular pixels (not square). This is why you end up with a funky resolution compared with LCD.

When choosing a TV, you need to look at image quality ... not the specs.

When you view this TV you will notice that it is far superior than some 1080p sets. The reason for this goes deeper than just the resolution. This is the reason why a TV with 1024 x 768 resolution, can get stellar reviews, even in 2012, when most tellies are 1080p.

I own one of these and it beats the image quality of many 1080p LCD screens. I find the colour re-production on plasma screens better than LCDs and the reason for this may be down to the superior blacks offered by plasma.

If I had £300 to spend, this would be the TV I would buy and not one of the 1080p LCD screens which offer poor image quality but impressive specs.

For reference I own the following:

    Panasonic projector, 720p, LCD
    Panasonic plasma, 720p
    DELL LCD (CFL) - IPS
    Philips LCD (LED) - TN
    DGM (VA).

I have no brand/tech loyalty. I buy whatever offers the best value for money. And own pretty much all the different technologies available today, so I like to think that I can offer a balanced opinion.

When watching movies, the plasma beats all the other screens, in terms of image quality...by a comfortable margin.
Many people boast about IPS screens offering good image quality - in my experience, for movies they are terrible. LCD VA panels offer the best blacks (for LCD tech).

all the neighsayers need to actually go and view this TV.... I Garuntee this TV will stand out when viewed with screens well over twice the price and for all the RIGHT reasons....

do yourself a favour , and actually view it, for standard and HD TV signals this panel will shine....

look at the reviews too... pleanty of posative reviews.... it's quite simple... if smart features are important to you and they have tobe built in, it's not for you.... if 3D is where you want to spend your money, It's not for you ....
but if great terestrial TV picture is what you are after with still decent occasional Bluray viewing and again great fast gaming performance , buy away, safe in the knowledge that you have saved comfortably £100's of pounds on a set that might have had the above and that 1080 sticker, but suffered with a worse picture!!!

get stuck up in the stats if you want to, but if you were after the latest and greatest you wouldn't be looking at a £300 TV would you.

IN 'this' Market this is a cracker!!!

Having recently looked around for a set for my son, I was utterly dejected that even the premium sets, do not come close to my 6 year old HD Ready 'panel', ok it's a Pro panel, not a TV and was expensive back then , but irrelevent, I couldn't believe the poor pictures on so many of the so called premium sets avialable today.
Wanting plasma again as I just dont personally like LCD I tried this 'cheapo' out of desperation and the dejection drained from my face as I realsied this was a better picture than the majority of sets in the numerous stores I had trawled.... this was bourne out on a second visit to a RS store this weekend , viewing the 37" version in comparison to a £600 Panny LCD.

    seriously just view it.....
If you don't like it ? I'll be surprised, but Fine....
in the price range it's KING

sorry I rambled, but the crap posted here gets my goat, telling people who are clearly looking for a £300 telly that it's old and no good is a blatant fantasy , JUST VIEW IT!!

A quality made Hd model will be a damn site better than a cheaply made, poor 1080p. This is a great deal for the poke. Don't be put off by such drivel peeps.

    This.

This is a viera plasma and will kick the crap out of a lot of LED/LCD's at this price and will be more than enough for the majority of people on a budget. People wanting true 1080p blu-ray playback should look elsewhere though.

Cheaper elsewhere, so not sure why it's so hot.

    Not a hd screen!!

It's hd ready as it says in the title, and as others already said probably better than any cheap full hd set.

Ghost101, thats a fair comment and i accept that (unlike some) you are describing your experience rather than just some random opinion. It perhaps comes down to expectations, and what else is in the market for equal value. I think the picture on these is great, however if you contrast and compare to a really great 1080p screen then im sure you can notice a difference. I still maintain however that it shouldnt be dismissed on specs alone, and even those that go to a shop to look, be aware of 'shop distance' vs 'home distance'.

You mean input. No 720p screen can display a 1080i/p resolution, there … You mean input. No 720p screen can display a 1080i/p resolution, there isn't enough pixels.

    [/quote]

I think we are all fully aware that a 720p TV cannot physically display 1080 x 1980 pixels. If it can display that many pixels, then it would be 1080p. This is fairly basic stuff.

A 720p TV can however, display an incoming image of any resolution. It then uses its internal scalar to change the resolution to its own native resolution (ie for this TV: 1024 x 768). I do this all time and its no big deal. My 720p plasma displays images better than my 1080p screen (when fed 1080p content).

In any case, I think you are focusing far too much on resolution. Image quality is defined by a lot more than just resolution.

This is the reason why nobody as yet has been able to offer a cheaper alternative to this TV, with image quality as good or better...even though there are sub £300, 1080p TVs around.

I've just read the reviews on the Tesco website... don't know wether to go for it now?

Cons: Awful preloaded ringtones. Problems with other callers hearing what you are saying.
Pros: Makes a really good cup of coffee

I've had this TV for nearly 5 years, bought from JL for £650. It was a bargain then and it's still a bargain now. I'm tempted to get another for the conservatory, or the bedroom, or the bathroom - who cares at this price it's a steal!

Forget all your internet ready, 3D, smart whatchamacallits - this is just a great TV with an astounding NON 1080p picture!
