Ok, it is a different paint job, yawn.... but it is the same carbon material and construction
rodman ... correct its different paint job.
White and black color does not mean the same frame

Yeah, looks like the TCR bikes have gone now but this is exactly the same bike with different geometry

Ah yes, I see that it's different - only large available though?

Just seen they also have the Defy Composite 3, same bike but more relaxed ride position for us oldies or longer distance rideshttp://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b4s6p4918/GIANT-DEFY-COMPOSITE-3-2013
I tried the riding position of the Defy, (which is a more casual riding position) but preferred the TCR, each to their own, but it felt more like what you'd expect from a road bike. the TCR just seemed more fun.

and i still stand by my comment.
I'd still choose the Giant any day over anything Ribble sell as they're the worst company i've ever dealt with hands down!
Avoid Ribble no matter what

Yep I agree, I have nothing but trouble with my Ribble and the non existent customer service.....shocking company

Canyon make great bikes and have an XC8 MTB (in profile pic) Couldn't stretch to their road bikes this time though.
Judosteffer
also compare to Canyon Endurace, full Ultegra 7.8 kilos for £1049, also Ribble Sporting Racing £1059, carbon frame with full Ultegra, Aksiums and Carbon Seatpost (thats £60 of upgrades to get to the £1059 price)- £576 via Cycle to work.
Where ?
Great service from Paul's. Ordered yesterday and arrived today :)

Get this then buy the ultegra groupset for £430, set of campag zondas for about £250 and you have a cracking ride!
£750 for starter bike come on, I cycle 25 miles a day and you don't need an ultra expensive bike unless you want to compete in a race or something
I'd love you to point out where I said this is a starter bike!
You may not have said it but as bikes go, this is seen as a starter bike for some. I suppose such people are rare though
I agree however looking at at the normal user i think this is plenty of a bike and yes if you are into racing or something than yes its good to add more love to your bike as a daily commuter i think i bike should be comfortable to ride and that's about it.

Been riding a 29er for the past year with no real problems
Comment
yozzman1234
Just checked it out its a 29er so not great for everyday use , more for downhill !!! And it's only a small left in frame size so that will be a 16 in frame , medium is 18 and large is 20

I would take 26" wheels myself for downhill, 29's are heavy, slow to accelerate and unresponsive, I would have said that 29's are only for high speed in technical terrain, but I'm not convinced the benefits are worth it, especially now 650b exists.

Frankly I wouldn't recommend any sub £700 29er above a 26 because it means they have shoehorned the wheels onto 26" geometry to get it to that price point, and this will wreck all benefits you get from the wheel size anyway.

Do you mean a 29er as in 29 inch rims , 29 inch frame would be for a 9ft giant !!!!
Just got a brand new boardman from gumtree £500 in store the guy wanted £400 but got him down to £350 . Lots of brand new bike on there that people buy and then sell not used . And I got the receipt for 1st service free .

Have a look at the BeOne Spirit Sport, it's half price, down to £270 and an absolute bargain from marlin cycles at the moment, you'll need to buy pedals as well, at worst add another £30 but pedals are such a personal choice you don't want them included, and you still have enough in the budget to change the saddle or handlebars, also a very personal choice.

I was looking for a 29" as have tried on and based on that experience and research they seemed to be pretty good now a days?

Been looking at getting in to trail cycling for a while as a means of keeping fit *(getting fit). Bought a 2nd hand Saracen Traverse 05 model in great condition for £40. So would love to know from you bike nuts if I got a good bike at a decent price? (An apology for wondering off topic slightly, oops)

If you have an Evans Cycles store near you get them to price match Pauls. I live very close to Pauls Cycles, they are OK, but if you want to use the Cycle2work scheme they will charge you an extra 10%.
I bought this through the C2W scheme http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m1b0s155p5410/CANNONDALE-TRAIL-SL-29-1-2014 , and got Evans to price match. Happy days!

I think they only price matched Paul's in your case as you're local. Paul's aren't on the price match list:

500 for acera alvio coil fork components? delivered disassembled in a box..at this price range surely an air fork with sramx5 or deore stuff is possible

was thinking the same thing. I just bought the GT Karakoram elite 2014 29er with rock shox for 100 quid cheaper.
Was just about to purchase a Voodoo Bizango from Halfords at Farnbourgh Gate but the lack of services and duff information put me off purchasing from that store. It's quite obvious that some of the staff in the bike services area are not adequately trained in basic customer service and seem quite content in keeping you waiting ( in my case 20 mins) without any acknowledgement.

Had a better experience at the Bracknell store even though it's an extra 8 miles from were I live. I guess it's just finding the right person.
Great price for an entry level bike. I was looking at this model as I found a couple of good reviews for it and I was just about to bite but decided to go for the SL2 instead as it's slightly better spec (mainly interested in the fork upgrade).

as a 'usual halfords bike'. Wait for the regular 10% off days it becomes £450. Use a British cycling membership number for another 10% becomes £405. Use code readily available with a quick search on HUKD to purchase vouchers for another 10% and i paid approx £365 for a bike with 120mm air forks with lockout. Having ridden it extensively over the winter months on the Malvern Hills and Forest of Dean Trails, both red and blue, i would recommend it at £499. At £365 its a steal.
I dont work for Halfords and not voted on the Cannondale, looks a reasonable bike.

That is a good deal, best of luck with the Suntour Raidon forks though, Halfords ended up putting rockshox on mine as the Suntours just gave in after a trail

I got mine yesterday. Makes a huge difference over my MTB. Seat is a bit in the skinny and hard side.

May try and swap that out to a wider charge spoon after a few more rides if my behind is still sore

Don't change the seat mate. Give it a couple of rides and your **** will be broken in. (Oh matron).
Get yourself some decent shorts/tights with a good quality gel chamois in the bum too.

It's too skinny my sit bones are about 115mm so add 25 - 30 mm that's 140-145mm the selle Italia is 120mm so is too small changed to my old seat much better with wider seat

There was a Chain Reaction Vitus Razor road bike on here a month or so ago for £375, surprised it didn't get hotter but is available again in all sizes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/vitus-bikes-razor-road-bike-2014/rp-prod107022
IMO better than the Triban Red of last year (still has carbon forks but also has the new Claris shifters which lose the annoying thumbshifters) so arguably a better "entry level" bike than this ?

Looks decent this - carbon forks an sub 10kg. Is it a decent buy then for a beginner?

On paper looks like it, would certainly consider it if I hadn't bought a Triban last year, I find the thumbshifters too annying and will likely just upgrade to the Claris shifters on it once I can find a decent deal on them, but they seem to be not much cheaper than deals you can get Tiagra on, although that would mean then upgrading the chain, cassette and derailleurs!

one. Free delivery too.

So is it worth the extra £45 to get the vr model and get sora rather than Claris?

If that's the only difference then probably not, Claris is really just 8 speed Sora, can't really see that an extra gear makes too much difference, gear systems have become a bit of a joke, like multiblade razors etc in last decade! New sysems are not 11speed, couple of years time it'll probably be, ahem 12 speed?

Do not ditch the compact until you are fit enough to use a standard double. Seeing as this is a "starter" bike, I very much doubt anyone buying it has the level of fitness to use a double on steep hills, even with a 28 rear cog.
The bike's ok for the money. Im lucky in that cycling is my main hobby and I have the resources to afford several bikes for all occasions, but I can justify it and I can justify spending out on campagnolo groupsets on my best bikes. This would appear to be a good starter bike, similar to my specialised allez.... The only upgrade that I would advise initially and its down to personal taste and ability is to ditch the compact chainset. And before people say, I live in an extremely hilly area and still manage with a 53/39 chainset.

its an attractive looking machine and should be value for money, as long as your hopes aren't too high for what you pay.

As for the comment regarding mountain bikes... theres always the far better cyclo cross alternative...

Insane money for a bike.

Liked this idiot by accident. Not sure how to unlike :/

7.62 or lapua round normally does the trick.. oO
With the state of the roads round my way it's better to use a mountain bike!
danakajoel

Yes but to upgrade to complete 105 groupset would set you back approx. £300-£400

Which is why you'd do it in a few years when parts of the Tiagra starts to get worn and you'd extend the life of your bike and get an upgrade. In many ways I wish the 2300 on my bike would cause me some issues though ;)

I bought is bike last year, think I paid about £560 for it. For the price it's a great bike. Will need updating if you want to cycle seriously but for the average person who wants a first road bike it's a great place to start.

560 where from? I'd say this is a great upgrade bike. youve got the foundations to go full ultegra. My best bike only has 105.
Also I found the frame to be very lightweight compared to similar spaced bikes. ie Scott, boardman and btwin.

If the tool did cost £1k why not just buy another fork or even bike?
Qwerty cycles, Revel, etc can sort you out.

Home mechanics wouldn't, but that problem is most shops wouldn't (certainly the trailside shops I spoke to wouldn't) because they could never make their money back on it. You really want to be able to easily service your forks, which I believe is why, as someone commented, that they now come with Fox internals. Not sure which year this was introduced though.

Sounds like a bike shop that doesn't know its stuff:

http://www.mbaction.com/Main/News/How-To-Service-Cannondales-Lefty-Fork-641.aspx

And I quote from that article:
"Loosen the outer collar using your Shimano bottom bracket tool. Thanks to Cannondale’s engineers for not designing hardware that would require special Cannondale tools to service. "

Interesting article, thanks.
It was Alpine Bikes in Scotland and was a few years before that article was written, so I'll give them some slack on what they said.
Still reading about it and actually doing it yourself is a different matter entirely unless you have a predisposition for this sort of maintenance.

Anyone got any details on that frame? It looks suspiciously like the old Specialized FSR XC design (which inherited the frame from the stumpjumper)

The above is not a bad thing, its a worthy frame and very upgradable. £1000 is an optomistic price though, especially with the Full-Sus Halfords bikes (Boardman range) being very capable now...

How good a cyclist would one have to be to benefit from this bike? 10 miles in sub 22-23 mins?
Surprised the "where's the engine?" Comment hasn't been posted.

Cracking bike well worth the cash

gtfo! 3 grand for a bicycle is never a bargain

The way I see it, I can't afford a supercar, but can afford a superbicycle, so I was happy to put £3k down on my bike, what's more the annual servicing costs are a bit lower than a Ferrari, and it's unlikely a Ferrari will help with your resting pulse rate, not least because it's likely to be a magnet for money grabbing shallow bimbos X)

Surely it's the rider that provides great acceleration not the bike. It wouldn't accelerate very quickly if I was riding it.

They both look nice. I currently have a kona cinder cone and was considering switching to a full sus. How is the SRAM groupsest. I have always had Shimano xt, stx and currently Deore. I was considering a fork upgrade but a decent set of forks is about £200-400. I like the look of the giant frames. I remember them being quite dull and ordinary but they seem really nice at the moment, geometry looks better too.

SRAM is pretty good these days, the Reign 2 above is the one I would go for as I prefer rockshox over fox even though in theory it's a lower spec. Shifters and gearing are quite cheap to upgrade if required down the road.

Hi guys.

Silly jargon aside, you can get nice bikes from halfords and suchlike probably won't have to spend much more than £150.

Hope that saves the silly people from spending over £1000 on a bicycle.

Glad to be of help.

Halfords sell very nice and expensive bikes. Think you got confused with the cost of a such bikes with thinking the VAT paid is the cost of the bike.. never mind better luck with your next post.. we all can't wait for it...

Hi trixabel, sorry you seem to have arrived late to the party with your attempted and lazy troll post. All is not lost though have a look for any posts for Xbox stuff and say they are cold because they are not PS4s. Pip Pip!

I'd always go for a giant over a brand like that.

+1, Sensa a bit of an unknown mail-order-specific budget brand, Giant a massive bike company who build for other brands. No contest.

after dithering over it for a couple of years I finally bit the bullet and bought a 29er recently ......I love it cant see me riding a standard 26" again, some dont like them but some wont even try them id advise anyone buying a bike to at least give on a whirl

29ers are dead 650b will be the new standard

Nah, the manufacturers will try convincing us all that somewhere between the two will be the NEXT best thing ...

I bought a 29er last year, and I really enjoy it ... especially as my nearest forest is 8 miles away. It just makes the ride there so much quicker, so I can get on with the fun bit sooner.

I tried my mates 650b and I struggled to tell much difference from a 26, especially over tree roots and rutted ground ... the 29er smooths these things out, but loses out on the technical parts. All in all, I think the 29er makes the boring bits better, and the sacrifice for the technical elements does not outweigh the benefits of making the dull parts of a ride quicker.

Last month - I was riding home from the forest and on a straight bit of road - I always try and put down as much power as possible on the stretch as there is a speed camera around the corner flashing up your speed ... I pulled up at the traffic lights a few hundred yards on and about 30 seconds later two guys on road bikes pulled up completely out of breath. The one on the inside turned to his mate and said "there is no wonder we couldn't catch him - big wheels" ... I had a good chin wag with the guys when we decided to call in for a coffee. Seemed like decent sorts for shaven legged MAMILs :)

As per broadyo - give one a try. I got the Cannondale SL2 from paulscycles ... well recommended!

I truly belive that 650b will be the new standard, although saying that I am sticking with my 26 steel framed long travel HT for now.
the manufacturers/retailers are having a real push on the 29ers this year ,if I rode just off road Id stick wIth 26 but very varied riding the 29ers offer so much more in other areas for roads towpaths light trail for me theyre so much more enjoyable to ride ive just put some schwalbe big apples on to really give it a good push and its amazing ,thinking of keeping my 26" with knobblys puerly for off road

I would imagine your local bike shop would not touch one of these due to special cannondale tools...the sort of bike shops that sell these bikes are not the most customer friendly shop! (also really expensive)
Anyone know if these are the user serviceable lefties or the old ones that most shops won't touch due to the expensive tools required to service them.
won't get far in this, it aint got pedals!

1500 quid will buy you a real bike that will pull your arms off.... more like a lot of money for a pushbike!

£1500 will buy you a car that'll keep you dry when it rains unlike the bike you're suggesting. What's your point exactly?
Hmm, would have been tempted if they had my size.
