Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear . . . . . pray tell, who were the "tasty" bands if the aforementioned were "bland"?

I liked Grunge, used to go down the Venue, the Marquee, the Garage I just never liked Soundgarden (apart from Black Hole sun) or Pearl Jam, I though they were very samey and Pavement were bland too. I prefered Fugazi, Dinosaur Jnr, Shellac, etc although they technically weren't grunge.
I'm just trying to think who I liked that would be "proper" grunge, I suppose Alice in Chains, smashing Pumpkins, Helmet, Hole, Nirvana, Mudhoney were a bit hit and miss, the buttholes(???), Bush, Sonic Youth (been around to long to be grunge and most of the "grunge" was ****), Monster Magnet but again hit and miss.

Oh yeah ... it's hot alright!!!
Fab band, although lead singer did have a tendency to take himself a little too seriously!
Good to see some old school grunge fans on here ... I'm remembering all me old grunge clothes now!!!

I wouldn't describe Pearl Jam as grunge beyond Ten, really. Their sound was always evolving and albums like Yield and Riot Act sound nothing like the early stuff. It always kept them interesting for me. I really, really hate the new album though. It's probably the only album of theirs that hasn't been played by me over 100 times, in fact, it probably hasn't been played more than 5.

That's ridiculous... Soundgarden and "bland" do not belong in the same sentence. Late-90's Pearl Jam possibly, but not Soundgarden. In fact, Black Hole Sun, your favourite Soundgarden song (there's a suprise!), is as near to "bland" Soundgarden as you can get. They left a whole legacy of songs that are far superior to Black Hole Sun.

Favourite is a bit of an exaggeration it's tolerable, but with dross like Jesus Christ Pose which sounds like dodgy 80's metal who am I to argue.

Soundgarden - loved the Badmotorfinger cd
And Cornell still looks fitter than ever!!!
Used to hate Black Hole Sun .. it got killed by being played far too much at the time.

Alice in chains - loved them, loved their style ... shame the lead singer now dead!

Loved Pearl jam's first few albums but have not listened to anything new by them for a long time!

A song which happens to be preceded in the Badmotorfinger tracklist by Rusty Cage, Outshined and Slaves & Bulldozers, in my opinion the best 3 songs to start any "grunge" album. Have you only heard their famous singles or something?

Nope, it's just the rest of it is emminently forgettable, I particularly remember Jesus christ pose as being bl**dy awful.

I personally think Black Hole Sun is a a bit of a tedious song, similar to Pearl Jam's Alive and Pearl Jam one of my all-time favourite bands. Black Hole Sun is slow and plodding and it's obviously not going to be to everyone's tastes. It just never seems to go anywhere or lead to any kind of a climax for me to enjoy it fully. I have Superunknown and it's the only album I have of theirs but I've always presumed that, like many bands, their (arguably) most famous song is, in fact, one of their least enjoyable over a longer period. Just the way I feel about Pearl Jam's Alive these days.

My favourite Pearl Jam songs are the heavier ones like Go; Brain of J; Save You; Hail, Hail etc.

EDIT: OK, I've just listened to BHS and it's not anywhere as bad as I remember. Spoonman is also good :)

Saw Pearl Jam in '00 in the Glasgow SECC on the Binaural tour.

Personally I've never realized what the fuss about Soundgarden was either (although I love both songs you mentioned). Alive, however, has still remained one of my favourite Pearl Jam songs, although perhaps it's because I don't listen to any radio and haven't had a chance to get it overplayed. I mainly love the solo, which is different whenever they play it live. Last time I saw them in concert they didn't play Daughter, though, so perhaps they consider that a bland one.
