Seems like a good little starter kit for the money. Hot

was looking at this but with the double kit with the 55 -300. Was considering getting friends to bring over from the States - getting from Amazon.com works out at about £430.

Yes, I know there may be warranty issues and not everyone can get things from the States, and there could be duty to pay; so it's not for everyone, but I thought it might benefit someone.

I got the K-x deal at Xmas, great camera and twin lense package, if this is as good then it should be HOT!

Make it about £490 ($800) maybe it's gone up since Thursday. Given that's for the 300mm could still be worth it I guess.

I think this is a good improvement over the Pentax K-X - since the K-R has infra-red dots in the view finder (which the KX did not)

That's funny, a picture processor called "PRIME", but no prime lens included.

Seriously, DSLRs are all very nice, but if you only have zoom lenses, you could just as well use a bridge camera instead. A DSLR only achieves the full potential with a prime lens - either 50mm or 35mm will do the trick for little money.

Or a constant aperture zoom like DA*16-50.

Compacts/bridges generally have much smaller sensors (except some which cost more than this SLR!). This makes a huge difference. Obviously prime lenses are usually sharper, but they're not a necessity to benefit from a DSLR.

Pentax DSLRs are great. The only drawback is a relatively limited range of lenses and flashes etc compared to a Nikon or Canon.

Codes no good as only store collection available

On the other hand, and I quote from the net:
"A body-based shake reduction system, offering a 4-stop improvement, and meaning that any attached Pentax KAF-mount lens immediately becomes stabilized. This works with almost any lens that you attach to the K-r, providing a significant cost advantage over DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, which use a lens-based image stabilisation system (compatible lenses are the PENTAX K-, KA-, KAF-, KAF2- and KAF3-mount lenses; screw-mounted lenses (with an adapter); and 645- and 67-system lenses (with an adapter)).

Looked up the details on this and reviews for hours and decided to buy this over the Canon EOS 500D-550D deals available. The kit lenses seem reasonable and having the IS inbuilt will save costs on new lenses long term.

Unfortunately none of the DSGI group had them for delivery so couldn't use vouchers and only a small amount of cashback for store collection.

Very good camera imho. esp for the price

Built in stabilizer (none in Nikon/Canon)
Built in AF motor (none in cheaper Nikons D5100 and below)
Built in wireless flash capability (none in cheaper Nikons D5100 and below and Canon below 600D)

Built in effects for JPG shooters who are not interested in hours of post processing

Indeed. In body IS is clearly a better option than having to buy it in each lens. Pentax DSLRs work great in Manual focus with old lenses too, they just screw straight on and work.

Does look very nice for the price :)
Still erring on the side of GH2 though, but is it worth it at double the price with the 14-140.. hmmm...movie mode will be way better but twice the cash.. hmm..
Also looked at the E-PL2 but was put off by the lack of AF assist lamp and lack of viewfinder.

Tis a cracking deal

Jazzist you might also consider Pentax K7 and K5? or this + another lens?

GH2 does look outstanding too though and amounts to less weight and size.

But then K7 and K5 give you the weather resistance.

where does it stand compared with thr K-X ?

i'd get a canon instead, some really good deals on amazon. after a while you'll want to upgrade, buy accessories etc. pentax just doesnt cut it.

It's a good deal , but you deffo need a tripod. If there was a tripod thrown in for free then it's worth it, but there isnt so go for a Canon instead.
