LOL @ this on the website for prospective suppliers:

"We have a policy of not advertising, so any products cleared through will be done so with minimal exposure."

Unless of course HUKD gets wind of it, then the Whole World knows about it, eh! :p

Surge protection schmurge protection - something you just didn't know you needed until the advertisers started to punt it, did you? Does it also protect against swine flu?

Can anybody confirm that they have actually had a surge?

I've never had one so I don't feel compelled to protect myself from one.

My Belkin one strangely died on me after a powercut  . I think it might have gone in the process of saving my £2000 worth of PC gear etc... But then again it also regulates power.

ST

P.s I live in london so go figure.

I've never had a house fire, but I still have smoke alarms ;-)

What about Serge Gainsbourg of Je T'aime fame. Will it protect against him coming round singing and kicking my PC? If so, a bargain!

I've heard of house fires and known people who have had them - but the only surge I've ever had anything to do with is a fat Italian bloke who directed some seriously good spaghetti westerns! :-D

Oh yeah, him as well, singing Lemon Incest with his daughter! ;-)

Oh, and the guy who made the 'Casual' uniform of 1982 - Mr Tachini... I don't want him coming round making me look like a tracksuited soul boy!

Any other surges someone might need protection from?

False analogy. You might as well say you've never had a nuclear missile drop on your head but you still have a bunker...

What do you mean?

A half decent Computer PSU will protect you from most things the National Grid can dish out, bar a bolt of lightning. These things sell through ignorance and paranoia.

I have found these things are worthless unless paired with a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply/Battery) which will allow you to save data and shut down your PC.
With PC's using more and more power these days (Sli etc) UPS can be very expensive, and the rechargeable batteries fail after a few years.

Personally I have never had a problem from a surge a brownout or a power cut, and my main PC is left on 24/7.
(btw Laptops are virtually immune to power problems because of the charger/battery/buffer)

...which isn't covered by any "guarantees" they offer anyway!

Any deals for Home Bargains also turn up in my local Quality Save (Middleton, Manchester fwiw). They seem to be part of the same stores group. This particular item is still available there, along with all the other Masterplug bargains someone else posted a couple of days back.
