philips dont. they made by whoever makes advents, recently twinhead.
#3
no they don't, but it's got to be half decent for Philips to be prepared to have their name on it?

i had a philips, nice spec, but that was all. never again. just sold now going to get a dell.

gotta say, the spec on this is tempting.

Which model did you have ? and why never again?

My girlfriend has the X55 and never had a problem with it, great little laptop with a very nice spec. Good battery life, nice screen, fast, great wireless connection, light/portable, etc. I would recommend them to those who can't afford the Sony range. Also have two friends who both have the same model and they think they're great, both running Vista Home Premium very well.

I can't understand why this deal is cold! Is there a better alternative for the price elsewhere anybody!?

it was an x57, and it was the exact case as me fiancees advent, the touchpad was awfull as it would heat up quickly and be almost sticky and hard to use. The screen developed a fault where lines appeared, this has also happened to my fiancees advent. the charger stopped working, as did my fiancee's. battery life was poor, and it didnt feel like a philips product.

I agree, can't really see why this is voted cold.? I've not found a laptop of this high spec and of this portablilty anywhere so far?

Dell Vostro's can be had a bit cheaper but they are huge and the deals usually don't include a 2GHz dual core CPU, 2GB RAM and Vista Premium. This Philips has a 2Ghz Dual core CPU, 2GB RAM, Vista Premium, integrated webcam and a pretty high res 12" brightview screen and only weighs 1.95KG.

Given the size, weight and with the integrated webcam I would have thought this was a perfect laptop for people on the move at this price !

Unless of course there are loads of people having massive problems with these laptops?

But some of these problems mentioned are only what people could experience with any laptop. I've had Dell laptop screens and power packs go in a similar way.

I've got the x56... I think it was the first thing I bought through what I'd read on Hot Deals.

Runs OK, a bigger HD would have been nice and perhaps Bluetooth (both of which this deal has). The paint on the touchpad wore off leaving white marks, but that's purely cosmetic.

Gets a hot vote from me... Well deserved!

I think it's a good price for the spec! I just wish those who are voting this deal cold come forward and explain the reason why? Is it not enough hard disc space or is it the graphics?????????

Who knows? Don't think the GFX card is anything to write home about (intel )
But it's market isn't really the gaming user - Anyone serious has a console to do that!!
Everything else about the system looks rock solid for the price.

its a decent weight but the 13" Advent is lighter

I'll vote hot for this, a very good price for a good specced 12" laptop. Also not sure why people are voting this one cold. There are obviously some people who've had issues with Philips laptops in the past, so it may be that. Otherwise, it could be people who aren't happy that you included Quidco reduction in the price, it's usually best to post the price without Quidco and then add the extra Quidco discount in the thread. Quidco cannot always be guaranteed.

Good first post though Bargain__Hunter, welcome to HUKD and don't let the cold votes put you off!

any quick reviews on this laptop?
Am getting it at an amazing price through a friend who works at currys-i have to decide within the hour!

I ended up buying this laptop!!

I'm well chuffed with it!!! Runs nice and quick, screen it very nice and high res. The laptop itself feels very sturdy and well made yet it is still compact.

Running some of the old 3DMark progs 2000 and 2001 it brings back scores of 8700 and 3500 marks at default 1024x786 settings. it has all the pixel shaders, bump mapping features so it's far from a basic card....

From memory this beats scores returned by my desktop P4 2.8Ghz with an old GeForce 3 ti200 card in it.

Battery life seems ok at about 2hrs but I'm plugged in most of the time, so this is ok.

Comes with 2GB (2x 1gb) has two free banks and Is upgradable to 4GB RAM according to the crucial online scanner.

Vista Premium leaves me with over 1GB free RAM (that includes zonealarm, avast and a few web browsers open.

Runs nice and quiet as well.

Anyone got any questions about it I'll try and answer for you.

Only review I've found is here. I've had mine for about a week and really pleased with it. I work in the IT industry, see and use many makes and models of laptop (including Dell and HP). Seems right up there to me.

Thanks for the link. Its really your reviews that I wanted, more so as u r in the IT industry. I got mine at a really good price...something like half price :whistling: but the charger died on the same day so couldn't really try it.
Any good advice about putting XP on there, especially the drivers?
Thank you.

I'm still running vista on it which seems nice and quick with the 2ghz dual core cpu and 2gb ram. Vista steals 46% of my ram so still plenty left for other apps. Crucial.com shows this as accepting 4gb total. £25 will get you another 2gb so well worth it. XP will undoubtably run quicker on this laptop but at the moment i'm happy with vista, it's running all my apps perfectly.

In terms of drivers from what i can see you can get intel 965gm video drivers for xp, realtek hd audio drivers for xp. not too sure about the uvc 1.3m webcam though. All the other equipment i'd expect xp sp2 to pick up ok.

if you are concerned about getting xp on it and loosing your vista then id just get another 2.5" HDD and install xp on this. you can pick up 2.5" drives for £40 and they are very easy to quickly swap out in a laptop.

As a quick graphics card comparison on my 2,8Ghz celeron, 1gb, Geforce 3 ti200 desktop, 3dmark 2003 returns a score of 2000.

3d mark 03 on this laptop returns 2800 and is capable of running more of the tests not supported by the gf3.

The graphics on 3dmark03 are pretty intensive and this handles it much better than I'd have expected.

Having bought one of these a few weeks ago, I am very pleased with it.

Very portable, very sleek and runs plenty fast enough for most things.

I do wonder about the RAM though. Can you tell me if you know for definate whether the 12NB5800 has 4 RAM slots available ? I can't seem to find any info anywhere on how much RAM you can add.

It might be 4Gb, but is that maybe 2 x 2Gb SODIMMs rather than 4 x 1GB SODIMMs ?

I also tried to run the Crucial scanner to scan my system, but it said that my system was not recognised and that it could not determine my RAM configuration (or something like that).

Did you get it to run OK on yours ? I did upgrade to Vista SP1 last week. Maybe that is having an effect.

Really nice, very portable laptop though. Very pleased.

Cheers,
Kevin.
