This television was £749 yesterday! Selling at £738.89 online at Currys and £899 in store! Absolute bargain!

This is my first posting!!!!

The glossy black Philips 42PFL5532D/05 features state-of-the-art technology to give you brilliant flicker-free progressive scan pictures with optimum brightness and superb colours. This vibrant and sharp image will enhance your viewing experience. The integrated digital tuner lets you receive additional channels without the need for a set top box or additional cables.

Incredible Surround dramatically magnifies the sound field to immerse you in the audio. By mixing sounds from left to right it greatly enhances the stereo effect and creates a more natural sound dimension, without the use of additional speakers.

This television is high definition ready which means it will have the ability to display high definition signals with the addition of a separate HD receiver. High Definition Television will be the highest quality of digital television available. It increases the amount of scan lines to provide clearer and more detailed images than those available on regular digital or analogue televisions.

John Lewis also give a free FIVE year guarantee which costs £269 at Currys!

Why the cold votes? This is around £700 most places, but with the standard 12 months warranty. the 5 years warranty on this would probably cost at least £300 elsewhere, plus you get the great John Lewis CS. Voted hot and rep given.

Now £679....voted hot

Fantastic deal, me thinks.

Agreed, I've had a Philips 32" 'Cool Green' 100hz TV in my lounge for over 5 years and EVERYBODY who sees it is absolutely knocked out by the PQ and the styling on it. it's saved me a fortune as I'm not hankering after an LCD/Plasma set as I'm not convinced the non-HD PQ could be any better. I'm happy to wait until it packs in. Plus it's in an alcove so no space benefits for us in getting a thin TV.

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=394122&summary=true

It says this comes with stand and is also 100Hz (on the Comet site, which is more).

I have heard good and bad reviews for plasmas with 100Hz.

This is an excellent price with 5 years guarantee !!
#10
I am very tempted - has anyone seen or found a review of this tv ?
I can't :?

p.s. rep left as it is a great deal with 5 years warranty !

Voted hot.

Going by what you've just quoted I'd say "yes" :p
#17
hope so this is complete statement

We do not price match in respect of outlets
which are not normal shops, eg membership
clubs, market stalls, duty free shops, mail order
catalogues or the Internet. Similarly, we do not
match closing down sales as these are not trading
as normal shops.
Find the same item selling for less in any UK
shop, and we will refund the difference.
As we do not wish you to regret buying from us,
we allow you up to 28 days from the date of
purchase to claim this refund.
We meet such claims on the same basis as the
price checking by our branches described above.
In addition our promise to you extends beyond
the local area to cover any normal shop in the
UK (where you find the same item on display
at a lower shelf-edge price with the same
availability and terms).
While we normally try to obtain special order
lines which are not part of our standard offer, we
reserve the right to refuse such orders where it
would be uneconomic for us to do so.

I have a Philips 32inch Pixel Plus CRT TV and it's the best TV in the world.

Mine has over 100W RMS Dolby Digital Audio as standard...Find me a Plasma/LCD that has such great audio?

Also I have 4 SCART sockets as standard.

My last Philips widescreen lasted 10 years and cost £1,600 as it was one of the first 100HZ widescreen TV's.

The average lifespan of an LCD/Plasma seems to be 2 years before faults start appearing. Make sure you get a long warranty. !
#19
I prefer to use a proper AV receiver than to rely on any integrated into the TV, no matter how good it is. If I could save £10 by going for an LCD/Plasma that didn't have any speakers at all, I would. It would also look sleeker without speaker grills on the sides.

These days everything is going to HDMI so SCARTS will be redundant soon enough unless you're in the habit of keeping antique gear around. I'm sure 2 SCARTS is enough for most and if not there's breakout boxes if really necessary.

Yeah, I'd want a 5-year warranty on any screen I go for, too.

Seems a good price at £645 after quidco inclduing 5 yr warranty and free delivery. I might get one just to try for 28 days as their returns procedure states they will courier collect for free if not satisfied.

In which case the 5 year guarantee is great as you'll probably get a new TV in 2-3 years.

Cheers for pointing that out. My local store is only 4 miles away so i could return for free that way. I'm a bit scared of the 47kg weight though!

thats an awefull lot of weight ( thats over 103 pounds in weight) the 42" samsung was WELL HEAVY but that was onlY a mear 35KG.
if any of u are gonna wall hang this -take great care ! your gonna need some serious M10 raw bolts at least 100mm long ( use a minnimum of six)
check that your brick work is sound b4 hanging. old internal brick crumbles very easy. A good sign is wen u drill a 10 mm hole the the raw bolt or plug should be a nice tight hammer fit.but if its loose u hav bad brickwork or a blunt masonary bit. if u do hav the latter u can always use the next size bit down ie a 9mm bit and that will normally suffice a tight fit.
but it dosnt matter how good your insurance or term of your guarantee is - if that HEAVY plasma was to work loose and fall u would not be covered and it classed as negligance.
may cost a bit but if u have doubts about hanging it , get an expert in as u will be insured that way.

What could possibly explain the difference in weight between the Samsung PS42Q96HD 42" and this 42"?

32.2kg vs 47kg.

Better build quality or worse?

So have you got a plasma/LCD as apparently they have gone rapidly downhill since the old CRT days where I agree they were great?

Dumb Question Alert -

You're thinking of the early plasma TVs where 'burn-in' (see
http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/plasmatv-burnin.html ) was a problem. The latest models from the major manufacters are several generations on and burn-in is no longer an issue.

As for shelf-life? Well Panasonic are today (Sunday 5 Aug) selling a plasma TV on QVC as a 'Today's Special Value' and their salesman claims that they last up to 60,000 hours - in other words 14 years when used 12 hours a day. A regular CRT TV is built to last only 30,000 hours. And Panasonic have been backing up their claims on this, I ordered one of their plasmas last week with a FREE Panasonic 5 year warranty, I doubt that they would be offering such a guarantee if their sets were regularly breaking down within that period.

47kg is the total packaging, tv itself is only 31.5kg or 41.5kg with the stand.

Started looking on flea bay for a wall mount that supports 47+ kg's until I saw this.

Anyone have a good source for wall mounts?

Really tempted, but can't find any reviews, nothing on avforums.com either (except for this which could just have been a one off?).

yes, this is another tv bargain but it cant be FULL HD at that price . at best it can only be 1024 x 768 . still a great deal though .
#39
It isn't full hd.

However, there is a great deal of snobbery regards full hd panels. Given the broadcasts are negligible at 1080p, if existent at all.

Many are also of the opinion that one cannot fully appreciate the benefits of 1080p unless you have a panel 50" or over.

720p is perfectly acceptable.
