Seems like a cracking deal with the free PC games - hot
#2
How does this work?

Does it connect via USB or something?

Are the units in the pic the light generating units?....as they look like speakers
#3
its a usb connected device - one big backlight and the 2 "speakers" are sidelights.

Can be quite nice running.

I quite like the idea of running this at parties and so on, but can't see how much control you'd get...
#5
Looks like there is some form of Linux support via boblight and/or CombustD, hopefully I'll be able to get this working with XBMClive on the acer REVO.

If not the games PC is also plugged in the Panasonic 50".

Thanks to the OP heat given & purchased
#6
hot for the real PC gamers out there.
#7
i will use it for watching movies

It TK Maxx I saw a pack with these in, plus 2 fans and something else (may have been something for vibration). Was about £40 and looked pretty cool although would really clutter up the place!
#9
You can sell the Flashpoint Dragon Rising game to cex for 10 cash so really this costs you 14.99.

I can't decide if I quite 'get it', or whether I should just get it :)
The extra clutter could outweigh the benefits...

Exactly my thinking, i'd definitly buy it if it was just the rear unit, those two little satellite lights look a bit pointless if they're not speakers, and I certainly wont be replacing my current ones with the toys you get in the premium version...
#12
as its usb can i use this on ps3?
#13
I have the complete set for this. The main back light unit connects to your PC via USB, and other peripherals connect into that. Beware that the units provided in this pack only provide light. There is another pack (as mentioned) that contains the same, but also adds in sub-woofer, 2 speaker lights (ie. look the same as these, but with speakers in), 2 fans and a rumble strip.

The lighting system will work with apps like WMP (ie via a special plugin) for audio, and can also be integrated with video apps such as VLC so that you can use them whilst watching movies.

To get all the peripherals working, you need a AmBx compliant application or game. Far Cry 2 demonstrates the system very well.

To be honest the speaker system isn't all its cracked up to be, as this product is intended for game immersion, yet only supports 2.1 audio. However, the lighting aspects can be used with ie. a HTPC to create an ambilight type environment for TVs that don't have that facility...

No you will not, as it requires drivers to be loaded. It may be possible if you are using your PS3 for Linux, but I doubt it...

Theres about 3 people online at any one time if your lucky on flashpoint.

I got the fans and starter kit for 1 quid from Gamestation

but doesn't include delivery.

The above does not include VAT, pric with VAT is 22.27 plus you don't get games, as stated before you can get £10 at CEX with one game

anything like this you can get for TV's?

so when I have the PS3/360 going etc this will kick in?
#21
Not overly impressed.

Theres a bit of a lag, plus they'd only clutter up the desk for a while.......then get dumped in the loft

Also for those thinking of taking the CEX route - they may not give the money if the supplied games are not normal retail versions, and it is very unlikely they will be.

Rather more expensive once you factor in postage. Plus there's no indication that it includes the free games.

I've decided to go for it. Hopefully won't regret it.... eek.

At least L4D, Dirt 2 and Mass Effect 2 are compatible so I'll have some games to test it with next week.

Shame it doesn't include Grid rather than Race Driver though, that'd be excellent.
#23
Don't worry about compatible games or not - the ambx software can emulate compatibility with anything, even Flash for YouTube videos or iPlayer.

Think I'm going to give it a try too mostly for l4d/l4d2... although I hope I don't find it distracting.

I'm more worried about how ridiculous my coffee table is going to look like with all this junk on it, lol.

There was a HUKD deal on the fans a few months ago, should have grabbed them.
#26
I thought that I read somewhere these will work with XBMC?
#27
It does.

I know what you mean.. I like you keep mine clutter free, which mostly works, but the amount of wires hanging underneath the desk is just ridiculous. A messy desk is a messy mind!
#32
I am only planning to use this as HTPC and I ordered them. Do I need to buy anything else to make it complete with my XBMC?

Ah Yes! You are correct!!... my bad!!

Been this price in TkMaxx since well before Christmas, although that version only came with TOCA.

Great with music, although still a little buggy with reduced options in Windows 7 64bit which I am running.
#35
if only it worked with xbox

That would be nice.

Had these couple of months, also from TK Maxx and they are pretty good, not the brightest of lights though. And needed to hunt down seperate program to get them to match on-screen display when watching video, else they just colour cycle.

Look smart in dark though.
#38
I don't have a wall behind my PC, will this suck for me?

Neither do I. Was thinking about that whilst munching my lunch.
Suspect the effect will be drastically reduced

Theres a few different 'packs'.. this deal is for the Ambx Starter Kit (Wall washer and 2 Lights), there is also an expansion kit (vibrating wrist rest and 2 fans for air effects), a 2.1 audio addon (sub and speakers - the speakers also have lights on them and are very like the light units in this deal but with a speaker in the bottom half)

And a premium kit.. which has ALL of the above..

TK Maxx in sheffield have had all of these at one point or another, but the big box you are on about is the whole lot and is a bargain..
