Just read that in the description

* Playback compatibility: BD Video, BD-R/RE 2.0, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-Video, DVD-R/-RW, CD, DVD+R/+RW, DVD, BD Video, DivX H.264, VC-1, MPEG2, WMV, MP3-CD, MP3-DVD MP3, PCM, JPEG JPEG Still Pictures, DivX Ultra.

That must have been a misplaced comment right... Even in your description it says it has DVD playback.

Plus in the Blu-ray specification it has to include DVD playback as standard, so all Blu-ray players must playback DVDs otherwise they can't carry the Blu-ray logo.

I know! I realised after I'd commented. We all make mistakes.

Not sure, sure someone else could tell you tho'!

Can be made DVD multi-region, not Blu-Ray multi-region according to the 1st review on Amazon Page:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-BDP3000-05-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B0026WNDV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258131960&sr=8-1

If you're looking for a multi-region Blu Ray, eBuyer have one for £100 though not a well-known brand:

I wouldnt buy anything philips load of rubbish , they had my dvd recorder for 6 weeks "doh we dont know whats wrong with it" was all i kept getting.

Got it back in the end , opened up the cover to find "replaced" written over nearly every part.

Rubbish , stick with sony or panasonic

wouldnt even buy a philips toilet roll holder!

Got one of these on the M+S deal the other day, great little player. To make the DVD side, (not the Blu Ray), region free -- Press HOME on remote --- TYPE 1389310, (on remote) --- Switch off, wait ten sec's and switch on. Should be region free for DVD's, (not Blu Ray's). Worked on mine no problem.

cant understand why any1 would buy just a blueray player which is just a posh dvd player, when you can get the ps3 slim by far the best blueray player on the market and dose so much more

this is a good bluray player but i will wait until i can get a ps3 slim more value from ps3:-D

Have to agree with Kevin. I wouldn't buy anything that is Philips branded again. I've just been stung by sub-standard unreliable miscellaneous kit too many times.

I don't even rate their light bulbs.
#22
I was just about to buy this from Asda until I noticed this post.
Add something to your Argos purchase for £3 or more and get a £10 voucher too.

As for the comment on the ps3 - I have considered buying a ps3 but the gaming side wouldn't be used enough to justify buying one

As for the philips comments, I have personally never had a problem with anything philips

In terms of Philips quality, in terms of AV equipment anyways, their televisions are the best in class. The only ones that can come close are Samsung.
Plus as the sole remaining European AV brand, I don't mind choosing Philips over say some others...
#24
I was meant to also point out that if you can afford an extra £50 it might be worth going for this instead but also bear in mind that, if you can stretch your budget a bit further still, the LG BD390 comes to the UK at the end of this month and that has wifi built in

Just returned mine to Currys. The USB port will not play any sort of media via a memory stick etc according to the instructions, so I assume is for software upgrade only.

Well they aren't British so I don't see the difference between these and Sony/Samsung.

Besides, what was the last factory Philips opened over here? All I remember is that lot buying British companies and running them into the ground -- much as they did with Grundig.

Philips can go stuff themselves.

my uncle as just brought one and it has trouble playing some of his Region 2 dvds,
#28
Phillips quality is really variable. Some of their LCD TV's are outstanding whilst some are just cheap rubbish with their badge on it. When I saw this I thought it might be time to get a dedicated Blu-Ray player rather than using my PS3, but a little think about it and I decided I can keep on waiting till a deal on a better machine comes along.

If I had to buy now I would go for the Panasonic or Sony players at about £150. Both have deals with free movies which balance out the extra cost and both have Blu-Ray Live, an important feature going forward. Also Panasonic is IMHO the best brand around for consumer gadgets, Sony can be overpriced, but quality is usually bob on and they are one of the main names for Blu-Ray.

It's not mentioned on the product page, but if you can get the 3 year replacement cover for this item it's an extra £19.99 which would come to £117 but you'd get a £10 voucher back so effectively £107 with a 3 year warranty (including accidental damage) Again not sure if you can get it, but might be worth asking.
