I've got this DVD recorder and its brilliant. Recording quality is superb even at LP. I bought it after having loads of probs with other DVD recorders including a Samsung.
No freeview though, but i have it hooked up to a digi box.
This is a good price, because a few months ago the cheapest i could get it at was £75.99.

Voted hot. Same tricks as the popular divx player from amazon for multi region?

Press the Setup button without a disc in the drive, then type 5018 and choose the region code, with 0 being region free.

Does anyone know how good the compatibility of playing xvid, avi files for this player? Can it be upgraded?

You can download firmware for it at Philips' support site: -

http://www.support.philips.com/support/html/index_gb_en.html

The latest firmware is R03_08.

Dont know about this model, but I will NEVER buy another Philips DVD recorder.
Buggy and unreliable. Have had 2 go back under warranty, and the third is tempremental.
Maybe they have improved.........

I, too, had a bad experience with a different model of Phillips DVD recorder, but took the plunge with this one a few months ago - not a single recording has failed. It's proved to be highly reliable so far and the added bonus of being able to play .avi movies through it is a real plus.

Checked in My Tesco's this morning and none there at all. In fact it didn't look like they even sold this model. Still, definately a good deal, i've had several Philips DVD electronic gadgets. No problems at all.

This might be an ok deal, but there are some better deals on other web-sites. Check out Bigpockets.co.uk, (eg http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?lang=&product_id=24935&session=c5f9f0ec0641277bf47f855159a1f57f or http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?lang=&submenu=&menu=&product_id=24650&session=c5f9f0ec0641277bf47f855159a1f57f ) for some good deals and DVD recorders from £29.

OK some of them may have a three or six month warranty (each sale lists the spec etc) but I got one from them a while back and its excellent - manufacturers sealed packing etc. Its your choice. (Some items also include free P&P)

Personally I would spent that little bit extra and go for a dvd/hdd recorder with upscaling.

Having had both a dvd-ram /dvd-rw and dvd-rw recorder I think dvd-ram is a much better format for recording video than dvd-rw.

Good job this isn't an online offer, or I think I'd of just bought one :D

My parents have a Sumvision drive that I think is fine, but they have real trouble using. Hmm, this is still rather tempting...

@ ZerocoolJ - Neither of those have DivX support buddy

Big deal !

Try using your hand on mouse and search the others that they sell - you might find one if thats what you want - not everyone does

The point is that there are better deals around and not everyone wants all of the features you yourself want and they do have extra features which people may well find advantageous such as freeview built in and harddrives of various sizes !!!
#25
That's fair enough, but I'm sure for many people the DivX support actually is a big deal. And it was the only thing stopping me buying those two players you linked anyway :)
#26
I wish the recording were stored directly the USB. that would make more sense for people to buy :-D ? Does it anyway?

Great idea, shame no large manufacturer does what we want them to. I can think of a load of stuff they should do but they won't.

Still showing at £79 in my local Extra.
A few weeks ago my store had sony 120gb freeview/dvd recorder with hdmi upscaling at £149. Another near by branch had the same model £249 even when argos/direct was £199.

£59 a good price.

I would expect that will be just around the corner with the cost of them coming down and the gig-size going up , but I would guess they need to overcome the writing speed that can be variable and is I think much slower than dvd

I think it'd be hugely beneficial if people posted the name or area of their store for things like this as i was rather dissapointed that my nearest branch (Seacroft, Leeds) still have it at full price. £79.97 on shelf edge label and same price when i got it price checked, so as i said, rather dissapointing lol.

Maybe this is just a regional thing?

Got my wife to pick one of these up in wisbech store today. SEL was still £79 but it scanned at £59. Now I can get my old camcorder tapes onto DVD too.
#34
My local at New Oscott has it at the full price when scanned at the till.
#35
Anyone know if this offer is still on? Just to save a wasted trip :)

Cheers
