Just paid £60 for this in Currys (£10 cheaper than argos!)

It works fantastic with my 32" Samsung LCD TV.

Tried it with The Business & BBC Planet Earth DVDs and the quality was amazing.

Just upscale to 720p (50HZ) if your tv is a 720p, sit back and be amazed!

So much better than standard dvd player playback, and much better than PS3 and XBOX 360 dvd playback because they dont upscale.

Voted HOT!!!!

Good find, voted ++
I own this since it first came out: you can't buy a better quality DVD-Player for £39.99 anywhere in the UK!
#4

#5
Well done finding this one Jolsa. It appears in a few threads, but this is the best deal IMHO.

No, I have found this isn't possible. Something to do with fat32 or something, not too sure.
I have a 60 gb external which doesnt work with it.
But my 2gb flash pen drive works fine.

Really? Ive used 2 different model Philips DVD players. Both have had lip-sync issues
#14
read on one of forums for this model need to download software to upgrade to make it all in order??? anyone have exact place to go and does it do the job???

This is a great price, but there is a replacement model available. As far as I know the only difference is the newer model supports 1080P output (sadly the replacement model still uses USB 1.1). Amazon have a third party seller offering the newer model
The blurb on the new model is here: Philips DVP5980

Hope this helps.
#16
Well i have my 360 connected through VGA on my HDTV and the quality doesnt even compare to the Philips dvd player which is much better.

VGA is the only way to connect a 360 to HDTV, component doesnt even come close, cant believe some people prefer component!

Amazon have a third party seller offering it for 46.88

Hope this helps.

Does this play XVID?

How about Divx with Dolby Digital 5.1 AC3 sound?

May also be worth the extra to get the later system install included, hopefully most of the earlier models foibles have been ironed out.

There's a hack for it, but I'm on my lunch and haven't the time to look, Sorry!

Great Price! BTW :)
#22
Just wondering if the sound goes through the hdmi cable or is it just video? Not to clued up on hdmi.
#23
Yep sound through HDMI.

Do not be paying over the odds for aHDMI cable, no need to be paying £25+

Check the forums for deals :)

Region hack

1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
9. Press "OK" on the remote

Saw the new model in Costco last week for £60. (Comes with a 3-year warranty from Costco).

Got one of these a few weeks ago from Comet for £50, well worth the money.

It plays DIVX files from my 160GB Freecom external drive.

2 flaws that I've come across though. It only supports 8-character file names, so if you have TV shows on the disc/drive, I recommend using episode numbers before the show name. It also only supports 600 files on the drive, so most of my music won't play (not a problem with the films, but I have over 11,000 MP3 files)

Other than that, I still recommend it, as it saves loads of money on blank discs (and it's the only one that I've seen that actually plays DIVX through the USB)

Xvid it does play indeed, not so sure about Divx with surround. |There's a risk that it might not, since it's only happy with 'normal sd' type xvid/divx files.

I know this since I can play any film which is 500mb-1.5gb in size, but when I tried playing battlestar galatica HDdivx it wouldn't play as it was a whopping 1.8gb for 50 mins! It's all about how much data it has to handle per second.

Still, absolutely brilliant DVD player, comes fully recommended from a so called 'heavy user'!

This only cost £33.49 in Sainsbury.

Can anyone help me out. I want to connect this to a Home Cinema receiver. I suppose coaxial is better than the optical digital cable, or is there no real difference. At present I have a PS2 connected to my sound system through a Logik cable. It says this unit does coaxial, so i'm wondering if this is better or not? Apparently you can get DTS on this through the firmware update?

Cheers. and if anyone can confirm which version is sold in Sainsburys that would be great ;]
#34
^5960 is sold in Sburys.
#35
^ is this only in stores?
#36
Yeah I got this from Sainsburys yesterday for £33.49

Yes it will upscale your DVDs via HDMI (and possibly component) to 720p (better) or 1080i. My setup does show a marked improvement over normal DVD via component but it depends on your DVD player and LCD and can even be down to personal taste /opinion.
