I don't get this forum sometimes, this is HOT!
#5
I bought one last week, and my mate recommended going to Richer Sounds. "Kicks self*. Hot! Cracking dvd player!
#6
I had one of these when they first came out as my old players kept having problems reading discs as time went on. This has USB so I don't expect to have to throw it away in the near future.

Great player, great price.
#7
Cant believe the price of this has dropped so low since i bought mine last month at £55!

Great find OP

It states on their website:

With its USB port you can connect a USB device into the DVP5980 and playback digital music and images, directly through your TV

Does this mean if i connected a memory stick via the USB i wouldnt be able to watch DivX movies etc Or is it possible for video playback as well? If is possible to do this it would be really useful and save the hassle of converting or play via my creative zen vision.

this plays almost all the
movie files that you have on a USB stick. So far it has played almost all the video files that I have tried except mkv

is this dvd player black?
#12
yes its black.

Be aware that richer sounds include next day delivery when price beating, for example from amazon.

Also the one from richer sounds is multi region whereas the currys one isn't so they may not price beat on that basis.
#14
I'm tempted, but it's vague on Philips and other review/specs websites whether or not this has a true DTS decoder.........can anyone that's bought it confirm please?

This dvd player is actually very good, best by far for this price. Its get a very very good scaler. And some of the customizations you can do with this particular player are great.

Region Free Hack for the Philips DVP5980

1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Play" button on the remote

I got one of these in fact got two the 5960 and 5980, the 5980 on main tv, 40 LCD

I can play films from the usb 4gb Play branded stick fine. Even up to 1.46gb in size without any slowness. Admittedly its slow to load up than a DVDR disc but once it loads up the first part as it caches the file its great. really pleased with both players

I hooked up surround sound amp (yamaha) and I get really good sound, I haven't had any problems at all even with packed bitstream

I paid £47.25 back in March for mine

Its quite thin and I prefer it to the Sumvision Phoenix which we also got, muc better display than that Sumvision.

I went looking for one of these in my local Currys the other week and couldnt find one so hopefully will have more luck with this

Cheers rockwell.

Had one of these for a while now! Excellent! Hot deal.

I mainly use it for the USB.

Unfortunately, you're correct here.

I just phoned Currys .... and they have them in stock near me. Their ones are NOT multi-region out of the box.

I then phoned Richer Sounds and they would not price match it for me unless Curry were able to confirm it's the multi region one ..... which they won't.

So ..... no price promise.

:(

Having said that, Currys £39.99 is still a good price and it looks like it's simple to remote hack it to multi-region so I might just grab one of theirs anyway.

Currys will just give you your money back as your unit is faulty. digital out over coax works fine on them. I'm sure you know, but u do have to tell it to send it out over coax in the settings menu. Just get another one, it works fine on mine.

Probably because there is a newer model (DVP5990) that has full USB 2.0 support:

Just because you dont like philips is no reason to vote cold.

vote cold if this product is cheaper elsewhere. Why is it even long term users still dont understand how to vote properly? :whistling:

I hate LIDL but I wouldnt vote every LIDL deal as cold. By your poor logic, I should be.

No DTS decoder in this im afraid.

Had mine a week and it plays all the stuff my old DK player played and the usb port is the icing on the cake. For the price its a nice bit of kit and is very slim and not very deep, it looks rather cool tbh. People complained that the remote was tacky, but i find it has all the button you will need with a few featu[res that are not explained in the manual.

One of these being the lack of tray opening via the remote, this can be achieved by holding down the stop button. Also there were complaints of the fastforward and rewind sharing the chapter skip button, if you use the left and right arrow keys there is no need to use the dual function button.

Show me anything compareable at this price point and ill show my ****, tis a good buy ;-)

Hi,

Does the HDMI support The Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) too? I.e. can I control the DVD player hooked upto my HDTV using HDMI using the TV's remote too?

TIA

Yes it is, the point of this is that Richer Sounds will price match, and then beat by £5 if Curry's have it in stock. So you get it for £34.99 instead of £39.99.
