It has a coaxial digital input, so you'd need an optical to coaxial converter like this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-Optical-Input-converter-Coax-Output/dp/B000R46JAY/ref=pd_sbs_ce_2

Manual for the HTS3357 if anyone's interested:

does the sony one have optical in

Having found the deal originally on Amazon, I have now bought from pc world for £102.99 so thanks to those who pointed out the PCWorld price promise

I too was interested in the sony dav dz260 but what swung it for me in favour of the phillips was the dixX playback in the lattter as there are ways of getting round the lack of optical connection but you cant introduce divX into the Sony.

At this price, just over £100 for a well regarded product seems a bargain. Surprised it wasnt made more Hot because its still the cheapest deal on the net!

Yes according to the technical specs:

http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=DAV-DZ260&site=odw_en_GB&imageType=Main&category=HCS+Surround+Kit+%26+DVD+Player#pageType=TechnicalSpecs

But then there's one review saying it won't connect to the xbox...maybe he's just a dumbass?

ye it has optical, also does connect to the 360

According to some sites specs it has DivX but just read my instruction manual and it says DivX init but says except UK models (Sony)

but will this produce 5.1 surround sound?
or just the normal 5 speaker sound?

Anyone know how long the cables are for these? I'd be using it for projector, which is at the back of the room obviously, as opposed to having the dvd player under the tv set.

Can anyone also confirm if the sound quality from my 360 will be any good with one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29293&criteria=coax%20optical&doy=9m7 ?

Check below, very good reviews and several people use usb to play divx/avi. Maybe someone on this site who has bought can confirm but cant see why you cant lay moves from usb stick.

For just over £100 you get a hifi, radio, dvd player, HD upscaling, cinema surround, picture player, free-standing speakers- its a great deal for the price!

Yep, I got this set-up off fleabay for under £100 delivered about 2 months ago & have been really happy, plays divx off a memory stick fine & have been quite impressed by the surround sound. The cables are long but also clear so don't look too awful trailing about!

Do you ring them when placing order? How did price match work?

Do they give any particular date/time for delivery?
#23
Why are people always obsessed whether it plays DivX? Is this so people can download movies off the net in Divx format and then play them on this player?

I prefer the Sony for its optical connection and the fact the speakers are smaller, wouldn't want the ugly looking towers in my living room!
#24
Looks like a good deal to me and what is the best size mem stick for divx playback, for movies and tv shows??
#25
For just over £100, you get a dvd player, HD upscaling, cinema surround, free standing speakers, music player and divX playback.

Looks like Amazon have put the price up now so if like me you have bagged a hot deal well done!
#26
Just ordered one at a price match at PC World. Didnt get the original price but still got it at £125 so still a good deal!

Well I kinda regret not ordering with Amazon for the few quid extra. My order has been packaged since yesterday, but is now just 'waiting in the warehouse'. I asked "any idea when it will be sent out? will it be here tomorrow", "no, sir, it's missed the deadline for that, it'll probably get sent out Monday now, so you'll get it Tuesday".

I ordered it Tuesday ffs, what they hell have they been doing? BUILDING IT?! They were quick enough to take the money, however...

Amazon can sometimes take just as long to dispatch Items. Most sites now are very quick to take the money and no rush to send out the goods !

This was rated a Best Buy in the April edition of Which? when it was £180. It scored 70%, only 2% less than the top rated system. However, the Philips HTS 3154 only scored 1% less and is only £100. Which? rated it as Exceptional Value. Supposed to be widely available, I'd go for one of those if I was looking for one.
#33
damn wished i had not thought too much about this
i really wanted one for £110
guess have to wait until it falls in price :(

Mine too will hopefully be delivered Monday, cant wait to hook it up to my new Panasonic TH42PX80B!

Quick question if I may, I have a standard sky box and dvd recorder which are linked in serial to my HDTV via scart. When I hook my new phillipis home cinema via HDMI will surround sound come out of tv for the sky box and dvd recorder or do I have to conenct them to the home cinema system separately? If so whats the best way- use the aidio in/out connections?
#35
Just arrived :-D setting it up now will comment in a bit...
#36
Received mine Monday, set it up as per the instructions but put the tall boy speakers on either corner of the room at the front instead of behind. Connected the system into my panny by hdmi and then run audio out cables from the tv to the phillips system to get all audio inputs from the tv working through it. The only dissapointment Ive had is that it doesnt play the discs from my dv hdd recorder which I think are DVD-RAM format but then again it doesnt specify these are playable on the phillips website so cant complain.

Im really happy with the system for the money and wonder how Phillips and PCworld make money out of it at that price.
