I noticed that Curry's in Kingston was closing down so thought I would have a look for any little bargains. What I did find was the Philips HTS8100 sound bar for under £250.

I know stocks are limited but there are lots of stores showing at least the display model. I managed to get a brand new unopened one.

Here's the spec:

Ambisound for full no-fuss multichannel surround sound

The Ambisound surround sound system, powered by a full multi-channel amplifier, uses an advanced digital sound processing technology that provides multi-channel surround sound from fewer speakers. By positioning independent drivers at precise angles, a powerful multi-channel surround sound is produced and experienced in any room shape and size.

Sound bar system in a stylish integrated single-unit design

HDMI 1080p with true high definition video upscaling

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and intelligently communicates the highest output resolution from the source device. It is a direct digital connection that can carry uncompressed digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio - eliminating the conversion to analogue signals so you get perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. In addition, with HDMI video upscaling, you can increase the resolution of SD (Standard Definition) video signals that DVDs use to HD (High Definition) so you'll see more details and sharper, more true-to-life pictures.

Faroudja DCDi for incredibly sharp high quality video

Directional Correlation De-interlacing is a video processing technology invented and patented by Faroudja that gives you incredibly sharp high quality videos on your progressive scan TV.

Smart Surround optimises surround settings automatically

Enjoy the best possible sound without having to make surround setting changes every time you change a disc or switch between movies and music. Unlike normal 5.1 systems that feature default multi-channel surround settings, Smart Surround automatically changes the surround settings to suit your music encoded in stereo or your movie with multi-channel content.

DoubleBASS for an extended, deep bass experience

DoubleBASS is a Philips proprietary DSP algorithm that extends the range of the lower frequencies by capturing frequencies lower than 30Hz and recreates them in the audible range of the subwoofer. This ensures you hear even the deepest bass tones despite the compact size of the subwoofer.

Soft dome tweeters for pure clarity

Soft Dome Tweeters reproduce clear high and mid-range frequencies that enhance the overall clarity of sound from the speakers.

USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives

Simply plug your device into the USB port on your Philips DVD system. Your digital music and photos will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favourite moments with family and friends.

Sophisticated design which matches your Flat TV

MP3 Line-in for music playback from Portable Media Players

MP3 Line-in uses Plug and Play technology that allows direct playback of MP3 content via the home theatre system by simply plugging your portable MP3 player into the built-in headphone jack. Now you can enjoy the superb sound quality of the Philips Home Theatre System while playing your favourite music from your portable MP3 player.

space? u could put speakers anywhere... they dont take up much space unless u got some huge speakers.. but most of these 5.1 setups have small speakers which u could put anywhere... the sub for all these systems r big however... but the amount of bass would be far greater than from this speaker slab lol

this is not the best if you are looking for proper 5.1 sound ... i read a lot of reviews (gadget show included)about these type of home cinema systems ... they dont give you the proper experience of a 5.1 system ... but these looks cool ...

I'm quite happy with mine. I'd compramise sound for style as my new living room isnt as big as the old living room.

The new set up (when it's finished) will be the wall mounted 40" LCD, The sound bar below that then the Bass box with the PS3 on top (with play tv hidden away.).

The sound really is quite good but I agree, not as good as a full 5.1 system but it would be too dificult to hide the wires.

Last off, I don't mind how or if people vote but it is the cheapest at around half the price of anywhere else. :)

I hope it helps someone.

Please confirm that this is definetly the HTS8100 as my local Currys had the updated HTS8140 reduced which by all accounts retails at around £749 from Philips and around £500 ish online. http://shop.philips.co.uk/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&Locale=en_GB&SiteID=rpeeub2c&productID=124467200

SPACE?[/SIZE] perhaps he means tidiness. I boxed up my Bose 5.1 a little while ago ..Got fed up with wires trailing on the floor .. then run them along the walls for a while , didn't like that but drew the line at embedding the wires in the walls... finally got a Yamaha sound bar.. 42 tiny speakers , sound not as heavy as the Bose setup but definitely tidier

Just to confirm, it is indeed the HTS8100 sitting in front of me. Watched Quantum of Solace on it and wow. I'm happy with my purchase. :-D
