Be aware, I had the dual version (SE635 I think it was) and the phone itself worked great except for one gotcha...

Even if you turn the answering machine OFF It still lifts the line and answers the call after 10 rings. I had 2 from Argos and ended up taking them both back, in my opinion OFF means OFF, not answer after 10 rings anyway then do nothing, no message zip, just a dead line to the caller. Rang Philips load of times and eventually got a guy who seemed quite senior, he told me that it was a "feature" and ALL Philips answering machines do this by design, something to do with remote access to messages. Hence my next one won't be a Philips...

If you can get to the phone within 10 rings its not a problem...

I have a philips phone with answering machine which does not do this- its about 3 years old and was the top model when I bought it. I have hardly ever used the answerphone and there is rarely ever anyone to answer the phone except in the evenings - I have never come back to see the answerphone turned on.

On the other hand I had a Bt answerphone about 13 years ago which did exactly the same thing you describe although I seem to think it had to ring for slightly longer to trigger the ON for the answer machine.
