Ok maybe I am going to sound a bit harsh here, but really this doesn't offer anything more than one of those Universal remotes you can buy at Aldi or Lidl for £5-6 other than style.

This stylish remote does NOT provide all main functions of your home enterainment equipment in one fun package at all and will have the user reaching for his/her other remotes in addition soon enough.

If anyone is looking for a Universal remote control, think about what devices you need it to control, if you have a so called home entertainment centre this would obviously include a AV receiver. Now think of the amount of buttons that are on an AV receiver remote.

Although these remotes along with the Aldi/Lidl ones can learn functions from existing remotes you will need a brain that has a memory of an elephant to be able to remember which "shifted" command button you have programmed a function on, this will frustrate the user and it will soon be gathering dust.

Check out the user manual for the product http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/s/sru7140_10/sru7140_10_dfu_aen.pdf

Only true programmable remotes like Logitech Harmony ones that allow buttons to be assigned with relevant customisable names I have found to be true Universal remote control replacements for all but the most rudimentary of setups unless you have a memory of an elephant as stated.

In fact after examining further the button layout of this remote it doesn't even have fastext colour coded keys on it a MUST facility for any european home entertainment centre, so really its WORSE in my book that a £6 remote which would just equally frustrate you the same. You would have to assign a shifted function to a key just to be able to press the red button, so much part of V+, Sky and Freeview!

Maybe I sound harsh, but I am offering this as sound advice, THINK before you buy any universal remote of all the controllers you use in the lounge then look at the product manuals for any Universal remote control. Then ask yourselves these questions, do you want to have to press the shift button + an assignable unlogical button like play just to be able to pull up your tv drive on your V+ box, or have to press shift + 1 to pull up the angle feature on your dvd player.

Voted cold as I guarantee anyone who buys this will be frustrated and this will end up in some car boot sale in less than 6 months time.

Looks nice though. As you say you'll need the original remotes close to hand.
