To quote from RSPCA PDF sheet on hamster care:

A cage with stainless steel bars or mesh sides is preferable to one with solid sides, and it should have a raised lid.

hamsters can grow big and I always thought the attached wheel they come with were a Joke :( poor things I bought a rat wheel for mine and had it in a small guinea pig cage :)

the attached wheels are naff, always rattly, just get some RC wheel bearing fittings and bit of DIY to make the running smooth and silent

Mines got 4 rotastaks together and 2 wheels so loves it. I wouldn't agree with the rspca co side ring they told me chinchillas should be in a cage 8 foot tall, 6 foot wide and 6 foot long when they came to inspect my house. Nothing wrong with this cage imo except the bars might get chewed through

This cage is not suitable for a Syrian hamster - minimum recommended cage size 80cm x 50cm x 50cm. I speak from experience when I advise this - my Syrian become a much calmer animal when I moved her to a bigger cage.
