Waitrose instore offer on a rare fruit. Nowhere else sells it so it must be the best price, it is on introductory offer for a few weeks. They are selling them in 45 stores for the next five weeks while they're in season so your local might not have them.

White and covered in red pips - sort of like your ordinary strawberry in reverse - the pineberry has the same genetic make-up as its red relative but smells and tastes more like its distant cousin the pineapple.

A 125g punnet of the latest fruity phenomenon to land in the UK will set you back £2.99 until 13th April, when they go up to £3.99.

Facts fans will be eager to know the pineberry's origins are in South America, where it was actually dying out a mere seven years ago.

Thanks guys. lol

These things look yummy I'm gonna get myself some today. They only went on sale yesterday so I'm sure there will be some left somewhere, especially as they're going to be selling them for five weeks and Waitrose is anticipating they're going to be a hit.

Give them some heat, they might not be buy one get one free sweets or biscuits but they won't go giving you cancer or making you obese in a hurry.

The news article was dated the 31st of March not the 1st of April so am thinking it's not an April fools thingy. Like the Metro newspaper said yesterday "Pineapple-flavoured strawberries are the next big thing in the fruit world, apparently, as the "pineberry" hits UK shelves today"

You can ring Waitrose customer services to find out if you local store has them. It is freephone. 0800 188 884 They were very helpful when I just spoke to them, told me which of my local stores stock them.

Some April fools day jokes are planted the day before, and this is one of those jokes.

It's a shame, i'd eat them if they were real *licks lips*

This is no joke! You can eat them, give your lips what they want. Waitrose customer services confirmed that they have them in stock at my local branch. They gave me the phone number for the store. I rang the store and got put through to the fruit and veg department and spoke to a nice lady who was stood looking at the delicious looking new fruit, she explained that they have plenty in stock.

Got to be April fools

They don't look appetising, they look like they're covered in furry mould

I purchased some today and they were a taste sensation, a really lovely berry. They aren't really a bargain at £2.99 for 125grams but they were certainly worth it for the novelty value. If you think they look like they're covered in mould you need your eye's testing. They tasted much like strawberries but with a hint of pineapple. I can't help thinking had I found a BOGOF pringles deal maybe this deal would have got more heat. The April fools brigade are missing out on a juicy treat...

And you'll need a compress for your eyes after I've blackened them :p

They most certainly do not look mouldy. Blue cheese, now that looks mouldy. Athletes foot, that looks mouldy. Bread that's been left out in the bag for a week or two after the best before date, that looks mouldy. Fresh pineberry look like gods gift to humans, distinctly unmouldy and aesthetically pleasing.
