pink (Himalayan) salt is really nice, much healthier than table salt and much better taste. the colour comes from the minerals it contains.
I normally buy it in B & M but this is cheaper and has a good container. hot :)

Might give this stuff a go. Keep seeing it in aldi, but thought salt would just be salt... Might have to do some research....

I think if it was Himalayan salt it would say that, rather than just pink salt.

I prefer these to grinders that we pay lots for! Price is amazing and cheaply replaced. I don't know how many I have taken back to Frasers, quite a few, now I just buy these. Heat

You've been conned. Salt is salt and you get all your body needs from other foods. Any extra is likely to be harmful.

Healthy salt is like low-calorie sugar. That website link is just pure bull - it claims that Himalayan salt is the "purest" form of salt, then goes on to claim how great it is that it's packed full of other mineral salts.

If you want a substitute for salt, try monosodium glutamate. It's got a scary sounding name, and many people falsely claim all sorts of harmful effects, but it's far safer than any sodium chloride-based salt product.

Why? Do you think it's healthier? Or do you have an irrational fear about something that's been in Japanese food for centuries just because it sounds like a chemical? Or do you know something bad about it I don't? I'm genuinely interested to know.

Honestly, I don't believe salt (sodium clhoride them words don't scare me :P) to be that bad when taken in moderate amounts, I don't get the great hype about it being a killer of the masses. I wouldn't have a problem trying monosodium glutamate, I just don't see the need.

It has been scientifically proven that salt is good for you. This is just a recently published article Stick to natural salt though, not table salt.

Monosodium glutamate caters for the 5th taste, called "umami". Nutritional yeast (a natural product) is a natural form of the umami flavour, and, apart from being loaded with lots of good vitamins, is delicious. I get it from Amazon, I absolutely love it, nearly as much as Himalayan salt.

That's an interesting paper, though I wouldn't quite summarise it like that. It suggests salt intake in a certain range - 3 to 6 grams per day - is likely to be better than either less or more.

How do you distinguish between "natural" and "table" salt? Do you mean salt without added anti-caking agents?

I'll have to give the nutritional yeast a go. Of course Marmite is extracted from yeast, maybe there's a connection.

Correct. Although for myself, since I have only Himalayan salt(and hardly any processed food), I just do not worry about how much I have. I also have it in water (when I do not have magnesium chloride handy).

Yes, natural salt is without additives. Not just the anti-calking agents, but all the process for removing "impurities" un-balances it. Basically, natural = sea salt and rock salt. I love Himalayan salt, it agrees with my taste buds.

You see, 3 years ago I had high blood pressure (and pre-diabetes).... since drastically reducing sugar and basically being on a low-carb diet (and reducing stress), my blood pressure is now nearly back to normal, without medication.

Yes, marmite is a umami flavour (along with anchovies, mushrooms, and a few others). I love the nutritional yeast as it comes in dry flakes and - since here we talk about salt - it is sprinkable, like salt.

I picked two up today (one for me, one for boyf) from my local Poundland. Just a FYI, this is a plastic container, not glass, and it says "imported by Poundland PLC, contents from South Africa and Pakistan" on the side.
