You are comparing a Rolls Royce with a Hyundai. Probably worse! However this unit can be had for £60-70 less as the Sony HXD870 which has a freeview tuner and a proper warranty.

garbage456, Not only is it absurd to compare a cheap Wharfedale which has a reputation for unreliability but it's also ridiculous to compare adulterated stock which only has a 3 month warranty.

I agree with Leadbeter I recommend the 160GB HD Sony 870 as it's brother the 970 won the 2007 What Hi-If sound & vision's 'Product of the Year' award as best DVD recorder. The only difference between the two Sony's is their Hard Drive capacity.

The now lowerpriced Sony RDR-HXD870 inc delivery is about £180 and better than the Pioneer. It's a risk of wasting £69.99 on the Wharfedale for sure.

"Product of the Year", "Best DVD Recorder over £250", "We can't think of anything that this Sony can't do, and best of all, it does it in such a brilliant and intuitive way. A perfect all-rounder", "Sony proves once again that sometimes extra cash can buy something special".

I own the Sony RDR-HXD970. It is actually a Pioneer machine with a Sony badge on.

No it isn't. My Sony 870 is not a Pioneer, obviously!

I'll think that you'll find that it is. The Sony *70 series are Pioneer models, even the hardware and service menu is the same as Pioneers. Under the 'bonnet' you'll find that the Sony 870 and the Pioneer 550 are pretty much the same machine.
I bought my RDR-HXD970 after owning 2 Pioneer machines (and a Panny).

If you do a bit of googling you'll find quite a bit more to back me up, particulary in the AV and Digital Spy forums.
