Been looking for this for under £100 for a while now and i think this is a pretty good deal.

See a review of this player here http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=7001 they give it 5 out of 5

There are cheaper upscaling models out there but this is one of the best for the pice range

Region locked?
Is it really any better than the Tosiba etc that are £70?
#5
Its unlocked (region free) in my opinion without spending £2-300 on a top model this is one of the best
#6
Its £109.95 at Peter Tyson etc...
http://www.petertyson.co.uk/ebuttonz/ebz_product_pages/pioneerdv696-pioneerdv696.shtml?froogle

So a good deal if you are after it, but not a "buy now, think later"

:o Sorry to be a bore but I have my usual question.

Do they or anyone else do a DVD recorder that can upscale on playback ?

I'm getting a little old to understand new technology. If this doesnt exist why is this not possible.

And if not possible is it worth buying a good value DVD recorder and a seperate upscale as a combination?
#12
goldstink me old mucker

i dont think it is possible
logic would say in my opinion this,

you record eastenders on the dvd recorder from the TV

you play this back -

if the technology was there surely your tv would upscale it first
perhaps im thinking wrong tho

What you mean like this?

Yeah got one before Xmas for £120 and a great piece of kit for even that price, it plays all Divx I have thrown at it and DVDs look great too.

I'm running it at 720P via HDMI to my LCD and can't fault it.

Lovely Pink Pioneer logo too on Menus/no disk in drive :p

Instore only at Richersounds, and as long as it is in stock at the other shop/internet site verified by a phone call by themselves then you can take it away straight away

I've just picked myself up a Toshiba SD-360e for £70 and T3 Magazine ranked it higher than :

Denon DVD-3930 (£1,100)
Cambridge Audio DV89 (£200)
Pioneer DV-989AVI (£750)

It also players Divx.

When watching eastenders in the first place its being upscaled (on a HD panel) by the TV!
Its up to you if you prefer your DVD player's upscaling to that of your TVs processing on playback.

Does it play all types of media?

Sideysid

That seems to be the fella !

One last question for all you tech geniuses. I read about a DVD recorder that couldnt do normal/good quality recording beyond 2 hours in length. Anything after this needed to be put on what seems to resemble a LONG Play function so quality was poo.

Is this usual or something I can spot easy.

im stupid what exactly is an upscaling dvd???
#22
See, the Toshiba 360E was what I was considering.

jamstaruk, an upscaling dvd just means that it creates pixels from nothing using a processor. Ie.. a DVD will only have 480lines, but your TV may have 1080. The upscaler therefore fills in the blanks.
That said, your TV will do that anyway, so a lot of people believe that upscaling DVD players are just a big con.
YOu wont know whether a DVD player upscales better than your HD TV until you try I suppose.

www.hiwayhifi.com are selling it for £70, but they charge £10 for delivery. I picked it from their showroom saving the £10.

Hi Def Tvs don't upscale in the same way as upscaling DVDs. Basically, as SMASHED says both the TV and the upscaler will fill in the blanks, but the TV will do this by duplicating the pixels, where the upscaler will read the surrounding pixels to make an intelligent guess on what the blanks should be.

I don't think anyone who has seen an upscaler in action will argue that it does improve the picture although obviously it isn't a substitute for real HD content.

To be honest, I don't think I would have bought this on the strength of upscaling alone, but I needed a new DVD anyway and it seemed like throwaway money for both Divx AND upscaling.

Hello folks, brand new to the forums but lurked for a while (and may I say what an excellent place this is too, saved me mucho spondos already).

I have one of these Pioneer DV696's for £120 from Amazon delivered (in the black finish, I prefer black for my a/v gear it's much more neutral.....I never really liked the silver fad).
The remote is a little cheapo (and they include a composite (!) cable in the box which is seriously low-rent).

I also had the Toshiba sd350e before it (IIRC the Tosh sd360 is an update).

IMO the Pio is miles better, never turns it's nose up and refuses to play anything (unlike the Tosh which was very very picky about media it would play and things like packed bitstreams) and produces an excellent image at all outputs (of which there are plenty - svideo, scart, component & HDMI.....you surely wouldn't want to be using the low-resolution composite?).
I use the optical Toslink for sound and it is superb (it also has analogue outputs for SACD use and DVD-audio).

Upscaling looks very good, but as has been already mentioned, it's no substitute for true high def but it's better than standard definition.

I rate it as a lot of player for not a load of money.

Far superior to the Toshiba I had before it.

i too have this DVD player and it is REALLY good!!!

plays EVERYTHING you throw at it being DVD, DivX, Svcd, Vcd.

Produces a very good picture running at 720p and is the best DVD player you can get till you get yourself a HDDVD or Blueray player, but wont be as versatile as this player!!

Multisystem PAL/NTSC

CDR, CDRW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, DivX, XviD, JPG,MP3, WMA

Xoro HSD 8410 High Definition upscaling DVD player with USB and memory card reader £70 + £7.90 p&p

No price breaker but another option :)
