£164.94 for five year cover (inclusive of receiver)

The Pioneer VSX520 introduces 3D TV to the budget Pioneer AV receiver range.

With the VSX-520, Pioneer have concentrated on the basics and provided a no-frills, high quality AV receiver. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and Pro Logic IIz decoders are all provided to get the best from DVD and TV sources. Added to this you'll find eight surround modes plus one designed specifically for stereo music. For optimum quality, the discrete amplifier and Texas Instruments Aureus DSP (Digital Signal Processor) provides excellent sound quality from this highly respected audio brand.

Pioneer have fitted the VSX520 with their Front Stage Surround Advance system. Simply place all the speakers by the TV, and let the Pioneer do the rest. Better still, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever system enhances the typically compressed music from MP3/AAC systems and returns the sound to CD quality.

In terms of sockets, the Pioneer VSX520 has everything you need for a comprehensive home cinema system. Three HDMI sockets let you loop through HD sources and are particularly useful if your TV has only one HDMI input. Being the latest version, they can also loop through 3D signals. Added to this you'll find a wide collection of component, composite and digital connections.

Although the features are more basic than other Pioneer AV receivers, the style is every bit a match for the more expensive, gloss black models. It's also just as easy to set-up. Thanks to MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic calibration System), you can get fine-tuned system tuning at the touch of a button. Created in conjunction with the professional sound engineers at AIR studios in London, MCACC is unique to Pioneer AV receivers and one of the best of its type.

For a quality 5.1 AV receiver, with 3D and HD capability, the Pioneer VSX520 makes a stylish and affordable choice.

I got a SC-LX72 with Monitor audio RX6 for downstairs, but would like something small and basic for the bedroom, wish I had some cash.
But everytime I call RS, they say yes its in stock, but its scratched to hell on the front.
It says may be ex demo or refurb, and new ones are going around 180 -190

I'm with you on that one. When i comes to AV receivers Onkyo is one of the best - better than Sony and Pioneer IMO. Why would these people just want the names, surely not everything the big names do turn to gold.......silly beggars

This is a good price for that unit, I have installed plenty of AV/recievers over the years and would normally recomend DENON, but at that price you can't really argue.

For what its worth Onkyo also extremely good brand!

Most of the "well known brands" use the same components as each other in there gear anyway.

Have had a Pioneer VSX-C100 receiver for years, and it's an absolute beast.

If it ever packs in, I'll certainly look at Pioneer again before anything else. Lovely kit, and often among the cheapest available at Richer Sounds.
#26
Before all the publicity on this site Onkyo was little known by the general public or hi-fi boffs.

Now it's more well known than Pioneer,Sony and Jedward combined.

Onkyo for president! Well done LuffGuy

p.s. Sorry to be picky, but Cambridge is a city not an amp.

Sony hardware is horrendously bad. I once had a CRT from them, lasted 8 months, broke. Then a 5.1 DvD HC cinema, the DvD part went in under 8 months. Used it as an amp for a few years but still..

No other manufacturer has ever gone faulty on me, ever.

I own an Onkyo AV receiver, truly amazing piece of kit. People who actually know their AV know that you stay well clear of Sony. However if you wanted a blueray player I'd concur the PS3 isn't a bad choice given it also plays games. :)

Strange, the logo looks like a crab claw.

Were Pioneer a crab fishing company before they started making hi-fis?

I've got a Sony Walkman and Discman that are still running 20+ years after I brought them.
Oldies are still the best me think.

Never had any Sony amps so cannot comment on quality.

agree i have the 605 which is excellent, esp for the money...similar specced pioneer and sony's were £1K+ (paid £400ish for my onkyo)

however the other brands have caught up...certainly pioneer have which is why the 609 have internet radio to give the edge over the competition

prefer the look of the pioneer though but of course would need to demo it against the others inc the 609 as i like the style of sound that the onkyo delivers - not so subtle boom/bass.....prefer it to the subtleness of denons.....depends what you listen to and watch which is better

Denon, onkyo and pioneer make excellent budget av amps <£500 (yes an amp @ £500 is classed as budget in the av world)

sony would be the last brand id look at for an av amp - never bothered with that make for hifi in past 24 years....in the early days went for technics, denon, tannoy, mordaunt short.....later onkyo and kef, pioneer kuro tv.......

the only sony item worth bothering with are blu ray players....have 2 and they are excellent but since the sony 350, build quality is shockingly flimsy (look at the sony 370 blu ray player - bought one cheap but if it lasts a year ill be shocked....my sony 350 is rock solid and no probs in 4 years from heavy use)

So both Pioneer and Yamaha are using tuning forks in the logo.
Me think that a little bit more imagination should have been used at the logo departments of the respective companies.
Or is this another case of two companies actually being the same one?

you cant like it until you try it mate. all brands have hit & miss reviews. I'm a cinema fenatic & always had Sony amps. Still have my dolby prologic receiver I bought from Richer sounds back in 1995. bought a few otehr receivers since then as new technology came out. never had a problem. If you only bought a base model Sony blu-ray player & liked it then you know sony are doing something right. and they will make a decent amp to complete the cinema experience.

take this for example:
