Can someone clarify please? I am about to buy a PS3 purely for Blu-Ray functionality - are Blu Ray Disks region coded? what are the region for a UK PS3 machine? Are there region free solutions available for Blu-Ray playback on the PS3? thanks :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluray#Region_codes

North/South Americas are region A, UK/Europe/Africa/Australia are region B and most of Asia/Russia is region C. However BR can be region encoded for one or more regions. So a region A BR from the USA wouldn't work in a UK PS3 (region B) but if a disc has been region encoded ABC, then it'll work in all regions. In the case of this BR disc, it appears to be compatible with all regions.

At the end of the day it's down to the film distributers to put what coding regions they want on a BR disc, and i believe there are forums/sites out there that have lists of the compatability of released discs. Also it should be noted that PS3 games do not, as of yet, have region encodings on them.
